As someone who shares many autistic traits with Donnie, the mystic machines hit extremely close to home. I'm going to school for art, and my favorite thing to do artistically is draw/junk-sculpt rusty ramshackled robots. However, many of my assigned projects involve none of those things, so i'd often find myself in situations where i'm using and working around a medium/subject material that frustrates me to creatively turn it into something i love (if a robot doesn't fit into the criteria, i'll make something else that's rusty). And that's exactly what Donnie does; using the mystical power that frustrated him to create projections of the machines that he loves
