ME0909 Motor and Kelly Controller, complete system with Battery
Why did you pick the 70h version over the 90h ? What would be the benefit of either ?
The 70H has produced enough power and is a little narrower. The brake pedal has to be adjusted to work on most bikes now. The 90H is wider, and heavier, and you can't have a brake pedal. YZ-EMX conversion with the same 70H motor claims 45-48HP. That is enough for me. To get more power you need bigger battery, and now you are even heavier. There is another motor we are thinking about, the Sotion GTS35, watercooled and 60HP, with a EBMX X-9000 controller, and that will need more battery.
@dcoxryton very interesting information thanks a lot ! How much does your sx weights with the 70h and 4.8kw battery ? I ready everywhere that eMoto feel lighter than thermic for a given weight, do you feel the same about that ?
@@gg4760-k5n I don't have pictures of the weight.(I usually take pictures of the scales) But I think it was 242, or 245lbs.
@@dcoxryton how did it feel compared to the 150sx with its normal engine ? Weights are pretty comparable and small 2strokes are already pretty nimble compared to 4 strokes.
Where is this track in Hollister? Upper Ranch?
I think that is what it is called, Upper Ranch, also it is near the 4 Wheeled Vehicle area. It is not always open for open riding
Sir I do run a Go-Kart manufacturing team in India. I wanted to buy QS138 90H motor can you tell me is it worth to buy because I have seen a lot of faulty piece cases ?
I can't speak for the QS138 90H, since I have not used one of these. We exclusively use the QS138 70H V3, and they have held up quite well. On the old model of the QS138 70H V3 we had lost a few output shaft bearings, and spun the gear on the output shaft, but the broken cases you saw were probably having the chain too tight. ( Very damaging on dirt bikes) We do not use the QS138 90H motor, because it is too wide to fit in most models of current and newer dirt bikes. It looks like a very robust motor.
Don, I have a roller for a 2019 ktm 450sxf I am in the process of converting to electric, I am very excited to speak with you to potentially help figure out the dimensions + motor mounts of your build! This is amazing!
That is a great choice to build. The frame is a little wider on the bottom tubes, so the mounts lines up real easy. I have a pretty complete mount kit for that model. Another great build Don! I have a KTM to convert to electric also...any chance of you helping me out?

been watching your builds for the past week or so i am very interested in building a Suzuki LTR 450 quad for the local mx track and TT Flat Track series. Where would you start with motor and controller plus battery for a 5 lap moto max 20 laps total for the day. Thanks Frog
The motor we have been using in Moto bikes is the QS138 70H V3 with an Votol EM260S . A 72V nominal battery about 50AH is good for your moto. But it wouldn't do 4 motos without a battery change or recharge. . The Quad could hold a bigger battery, about twice the size, 72V 100Ah . Message me and I could give you more information. Or go to ElectricDirtRiders.com, log on to the site and start a Conversation with me. We can post a bunch of material there. My name or that site is DonCox
Awesome build, I got this motor's little brother, the QS120 at 2KW. V3 version with gear reduction 1:2.45 I believe - do you think its strong enough to power a pitbike frame 17 inch up front 14 inch rear? Looking at about 50kg's for the bike, excluding battery and motor - built up it will weight approx. 62 - 65 kilo's, with a 70 kilo rider. It looks like you've got all the power you need on that beauty, I figured I only needed torque not the top speed.
That motor is a little underpowered. We put the QS 138 70H V3 in the KX85-100, YZ85, RM85 etc with the Votol EM150SP/2 controller. A 20S8P ( Lishen 21700 cells as a minimum )battery will give you good performance
@@dcoxryton Yep, thats the motor my brother got. I might have to look for a slightly lighter frame in retrospect. Thank you for the reply my friend. Enjoy the sick build, looking really proper.
Is this in Hollister ?
Wow Don, the KTM came out so nice. Good job!
Thanks, I didn't put any graphics on it so they can choose.
Looks great Don!

Love the videos. How important is it to get the sprocket of the electric motor in the same place as the original? (Not in the axis of chain alignment, but the other two)(height, and distance forward and back)
All 3 are important factors. With the long travel suspension, if you have it exactly where the original sprocket, that is the best. We strive for that, but the motor case, swing arms, and gap in the swing arm become important. But we end up real close.
Hello! Could you share your software, with which you configured the EM 260. I can't configure the controller, when I first turned it on, it responded to the throttle, but when we tried to configure the motor parameters, the controller stopped turning the motor. The throttle doesn't work, and it doesn't turn from the program, there are no battery voltage readings in the monitor window.
I cannot post any thing on here, but if you go to ElectridirtRiders.com, Log in, and start a Conversation ( it is the little envelop symbol ) with me DonCox, and I can give you a working tune.
Great action, love the old bikes and there sound
Where do you get your battiers from?
Amorge info@amorge.com They are very responsive, and can build what you need. But always select Air Shipment, and it will still be a long wait.
ive used roofing silican on both sides and slightly inside the bb on several bikes.. a few years later still no movement of the motor
Super underwhelming
Tbf he said mode 3 wasnt working so its detuned rn. But what did you expect, liter bike acceleration?
Can you fit enough battery in there for 30kw ?
A 20S16P battery, with Molicel P42A cells will supply 720A to the controller. A 72V controller that can supply 416A to the motor should be 30KW. So yes this battery can supply more than enough for 30KW

Hello, your videos inspired me to make my own project, I used qs138 h70 v3 and Votol Em200/2, but unfortunately after driving a few km the engine stopped and after checking it turned out that it had burned out. I have a question for you, is it possible for Votol's incorrect settings to damage it? Regards
I have read that you can damage the magnets with certain settings. But that would just slow it down. Votol has a Controller Debug Manual on there website,

Don, great job. Question, what year is Carter's YZ you built this kit for? I have a 2012 I am interested in converting.
This kit is really universal. It is for Carter's 2008 Honda CRF. It is being used in a dirt bike application, but the harness comes with all the wires for lights, horn, blinkers etc for street. They, China, also sell a set of throttle and controls for all those functions. I can't send a picture on this comment section. He has his own motor, I was just using this motor in the YZ. Hey Don you were helping me out on electricdirt riders with the blue klx250 super moto, i just change sprockets to 51 tooth back and 14 front with the trail bike tyres wow its a different beast. Anyway local guy has a dyno and said for 100 bucks usd i can do some runs. my question, can i push the max amps from 400 to 420, the file you gave me is currently set at 400. em260s is capable and the amorge battery is 420 peak ? Also aliexpress now have High Speed 150kmh 72V 96V 17x6.0" 15kw Rated Power Motorcycle Rim BLDC Wheel Hub Motor, wonder how one of these would go tweaked on a super moto, Hope your well good to see another video from you.
Yes you can run 420A, but you may overheat the controller, do you have water cooling. If it overheats it will come back on in about 10-15 minutes. but the cycle will repeat. You cannot change the controller or motor overtemp setting. I have no experience with hub motors, so I can't help you there.
do you ever use any pouch cells in your builds?
No I don't, I have found that the Molicell P42A give me the power I need and the longevity. They are the same cells that the Stark use.
Saw your comments on a forum and realized your in Havasu as well, videos are really making me want to convert my bike. See you around maybe 👍
Yea stop over some time and take one of the bikes for a test ride. They are so much fun. I am at the corner of Kiowa and Duke Dr. The Red Jeep Grand Cherokee
Which cells did you use? Molicel P42A?
Yes. We are using P42A in a split battery. 2 x 20S6P packs, so I can charge them faster on 120VAC They seem to be the best for power. We can get over 400A out them. There is a lot of discussion on using a LGZ P2.7 pouch cell out of Chevy Volts, but I don't see a benefit, they are heat sensitive. The bike stopped mid way on this youtube, because the controller overheated. I have put a water cooling system on since.
@@dcoxrytonhow was the bike been since you put the cooler on the controller? Also, do you have a kit for the motor mounts etc for this? I’m looking at building a 2022 KTM also.
@@724MX Yes the cooler is on and working fine. But the temps are cooler now, but I believe the cooling far exceeds the heat build in the controller. I went to Arizona Cycle Park last weekend with no heating problems. Yes I have a set of mounts for this model. Thank you for your videos and inspiration. I'm from Europe, the Czech Republic, and the construction of electric motorcycles is not much thought of here. There are several Surrons, Talaria, RFN, ... all just commercial. I ride an enduro/hard enduro, a Beta 250 RR, a Husaberg 450 and now a Talaria StingR for my daily commute to work on 20Km forest trails. But Talaria is more of a child's toy, tuning makes no sense to me and is economic suicide :-). But the electric motorcycle is amazing mainly for its silence, simple maintenance, ... I understood that if I wanted a full electric enduro, I had to build a bike. I need perfect engine and bottom protection for hard handling in rocks, ..., I need top shocks and full size frame and wheels 21", 18" for rear tires 140/80. What is the best motorcycle for you to rebuild? I like the most Yamaha YZ/WR with aluminum deltabox frame from 2014 with top intake, great battery protection, perfect KYB chassis. I am considering a 72V 50 or 60 Ah battery for the Talaria (Chibatterysystems or other) that I could also use in the Talaria (I know I have to replace the controller). One battery for two machines would make more sense to me and I would also use it year round as the Talaria is good in the summer for fun and full enduro for fall to spring when I have a full enduro season. Please can you advise how high a battery will fit in a Yamaha YZ using the QS 138V3 engine and if my thoughts are in line with reality? Thank you I also like the 4 speed gear motor used in the AdmitJet Armour, but I don't know if it can handle about 20KW of power. The clutch is pretty important for enduro and I couldn't find anyone selling this motor with a compatible programmed controller. I work as a locksmith and I'm good with my hands, but I'm a neanderthal when it comes to electronics and I have a problem with the user settings of my smart phone 🙂Sorry for my english, I'm using google translate

Hey Don what sprockets are you running
Lithium-King.com sells a really good one with wider spline area. They are a little pricey, but it is a small market
Have you looked into using Fardriver controllers with these types of setups? Do you typically run 72v and would you ever want to bump it up more? Your videos help a lot of people just was wondering what your take was, appreciate it!
No I haven't tried the Far Driver controllers. I have been using the Votol controller so long, and I know it. If I were to go to another, it would be the EBMX X9000. But they are pricey. I have thought about higher voltage, and the Far Driver can give that but everything is now built around 72V. But more voltage is more power.
Wow donald still putting these together? :-) Have you tried 3shul vesc (CL700-1000) yet?
No I have not tried a 3 shul controller. I had heard that they had reliability issues, and a friend tried one and it had to be returned, We have had good success with the Votol and the price is good
Are you making your own motor mount ? For the ktm builds
On this one I did make my own, and they are welded in. I have a bolt in system I just used on a 2019 KTM 450SXF. If you want more info about the bolt in kit, go to the forum ElectricDirtRiders.com , and start a conversation with me, and I can share images and info on the mounts.
This is awesome. What is the weight of the bike and what is your final drive ratio? I am planning to build one from scratch using QS138 70H or 90H. Also what are your battery cells?
My KTM weighed 232lbs before the water cooling system for the controller. 240lbs afterwards. I haven't weighed the Honda yet, I'll bet it is under 240lbs. Final ratio is 2.3 inside the motor and 13 - 14 to 48 - 52 on the sprockets. The QS 138 70h V3 is the best motor , size, weight, and power, unless you are over 200lbs
looks like the zoo
It looks like it rips pretty well out there. It looks like the rear wants to slide out on the hard leans. I wonder if there's a way to add a leaning sensor that limits the RPMs in the turns. Or maybe just a beefier rear tire :)
Good observation, this is the old tire that came on the donor bike for this electric build/upgrade. It is hard and old and worn out. Link that with the high low speed torque of the electric motor, and you loose control of the rear tire quick. Scott doesn't have a lot of saddle timein the electric bike also. It takes a lot of learning

China mostly and many parts from Amazon, which came thru Amazon from China. The total cost for all the parts are about $3500. Why though?
Because KTMs handle real well. The Electric power adds another dimension to riding. Why do you think they are selling so many Starks, not just because they are electric, but it offers a different riding experience. Try one.
@@dcoxryton Ok i hear ya. I was just curious because KTM has an electric dirt bike, the KTM freeride. Why not just buy that? Is there some chassis/handling/else difference that lead you to this decision? And yes at some point I'll try some electric dirt bike when it's possible. I want to know how the instant torque feels. But i think I'd still miss the rawness and sound of combustion engines. Right now, my 2019 KTM 450 EXC-F is so fun and interesting for me i could never swap it to elecric.
@@kahvinorja I hear you too. my last gas bike was a KTM 350SXF, and I loved that. I have built about 15-20 electric bikes, Honda's, YZ's, Ktm's Kawasaki's. They are all fun . The KTM freeride is a 3/4 size bike like a Honda crf 150, and they are fun play bikes, but we have too much power for that short of wheel base. You saw in this youtube my personal 2022 KTM 250SXF Electric. I know the 450 will out pull me in top end, but a whole bunch of us guys are having so much fun on these electrics. And I have built some for special needs people A lower leg injure for two different people, and they can't shift, and now are riding. They are just different and fun, but they have power. @@dcoxryton Ah ok, I didn't know Freeride was smaller than a fullsized dirt bike. Then the conversion makes sense to me. That's a lot of bikes you've built! And helping disabled riders to ride again, that is really cool. What kind of voltage does the electric motor have? What do you do with the gas engine you take off from the bike? And how many hours/miles(/kilometers) can you ride with single charge? I guess it depends on the use.. terrain vs road..? And is there an electric motor that you can just "throw" in these bikes or does it require a lot of modifications for motor mounts and such..? And lastly what is your favorite bike you have done a conversion on?
@@kahvinorja The bikes we are building right now have a range of about 25 miles of single track, but we have batteries that we can build with that can get 30% more range, they just aren't good for max power or moto track. That is what we like. I am building the 3rd KTM I have built, and I am building a kit that could be used on 2019-2022 KTM 450 SXF and probably Husky and Gas Gas. With this kit and motor controller, it will bolt in with very slight mods to the air box and tank, but no mods to the frame. I like the YZ and Honda because we can make a quick change battery for them. I rode a 2014 YZ250F electric for quite a while, but I have always been a KTM guy. I love this KTM electric.
Hello friend! What is the autonomy of this battery? do you have whatasaap?
The battery in this ride is from a KTM Freeride, 2000mah cells the can deliver 25A. I get 120A out of this test battery for a short time. It is a 20S5P battery. Look at the newer RUclips with the real battery in it. I can push 400A for a while. 300 A for about 12 laps on like Glen Helen, the big track. I don;t have Whatasaasp, or Whatsapp, but start a Conversation on ElectricDirtRiders.com with me and I can share info.
Do you just do custom builds for customers? Could you help me pick the smallest frame for my Large 72v 40ah battery.. I really want to squeeze it in a cr85 or 125 2 stroke. Do you think it’s possible with a qs138 70h v3 and my battery specs at 8.75” H x 9 1/2” L x 6 1/8”
Why are we fixed on a battery size? Go to this site, and start a conversation with me, and I can share some pictures and info. Electricdirtriders.com, and I am DonCox
how do you like the power? does it compare to a 250? i am thinking about doing a similar swap?
I love the power. When the battery is fully charged it is producing 40HP , but the torque is huge. It is all of a 250 if not more. And it just has torque all the way thru the acceleration. Where do you live, we have guys building these all over the states, if you want to ride one, maybe we can get you a ride. I saw your KTM in your go kart youtube.
Nice build, I'd love to have it! I'm curious is it water cooled and what top speed is, and what sort of KW or Amps you were pulling at max power?
Yes the Controller is water cooled, the motor does not seem to overheat yet, but the batteries do collect heat collectively. The first charge on a ride day is great, you can usually get the second charge in, , but if it is a 90 degree day, the battery will have too much heat now in it to not allow another charge for about an hour. And then the cycle repeats. We build the batteries so tightly for space and weight reasons, this compounds the issue. KTM, YZx50F, and Honda aluminum frames will all be quick battery change in there next builds. Watch for my next KTM 2019 450SXF build. The top speed now is 60-65mph with motocross gearing, and way more low end torque now so we could gear up for more speed. With the Votol EM260S 400A at 72V nominal (84V at full charge). That is 33.6KW at full charge and 28.8KW at nominal voltage. I raced a 6 lap race at Glen Helen on the big track, and I went from 82.5V at start to about 74V at the end of the 6 laps. I could have run another 6 laps, but you can feel the lower power. It does draw 400A at max power in this RUclips
Do you sell the motor mounts/adapters?
No I don't. There are too many different bikes. I do use Lithium-King.com for many builds. They can water jet the basic mounts, but they still require a lot of fabrication work on top of that. It is difficult in these builds since everything interacts. The motor mount is also part of the Battery bottom tray. The angle of the battery tray is determined on how the largest battery box fit into the frame. I have KTM's, Yamaha YZ250-450 F newer (2014-2024), and now 2005 Honda 450CRF down to how I could build another quicker. KX80-85-100 also. But they make subtle changes on a lot of frames year to year. So each is very custom.
That is Mad! Do you think it has the same power as a stock 450F? Seems really torquey too. Great job building that beast.
If you watch the 2019 KTM 450SXF factory edition test ride before we tear it down to be electric, I am on my electric KTM YouTubing the test ride. It has everything the same as the 2005 Honda, and when the 450 gassed it I pegged the electric right along side, and kept with him.
Hi Don, great video. I am also building an electric MX. I have the same EM260/qs138 70h V3 kit from E&C co. I want to program the controller. I am having difficulty with connecting to the bike. do you mind if we could connect maybe share some tips? thank you!
Send me a message on the Electricdirtriders.com forum, so I can get pictures and file to you. Also on the Facebook Votol Controller Forum, I posted some info, and you will need this Zip file facebook.com/groups/999971084014927/permalink/1284805222198177/
Looks fun! And hot!
