      Hello. Thanks for the comment. Keeping a solid and still embouchure is always the goal while trying not to move your teeth on the mouthpiece. If you find your teeth are sliding and that is the what is causing the movement, try to use a mouthpiece patch which will help the top teeth grip. I have a video here on embouchure which mentions mouthpiece patches - ruclips.net/video/6AQUTll_PYk/видео.html Maybe this will help guide you further. Thanks again, Chris Jolly.

      Hi Robert, Please forgive my very delayed response. I will stay better on top of messages from now on. Reading your comment about it looking so easy but remember, David has had years of experience. I remember the first time I took the register key off the clarinet, I was terrified! Many repairers are more than willing to be observed at work. I know David loves the company! So do feel you can ask. Saxophones are certainly more complex than clarinets but that being said, the first step to any learning is always the hardest. In the meantime I will see if I can organise a video on basic repairs. Thank you for this talk. Very useful. It is interesting to hear what the great “doubler” Eddie Daniels has to say about the matter. You can hear him on RUclips talking about the matter. He I believe does not like to use that term that we should not consider ourselves a second or third or some kind of inferior player of other instruments. So if you double on flute become a flute player not a Doppler I think you are inferior - if you are put in the practice so you aren’t he gives great tips. As Victoria has just said she grabbed the opportunity to play alto In the Kurt Weill opera She could’ve said I’ll leave it for the moment sometimes you just have to go for these things and then it becomes common practice especially in some of the older musicals it was not uncommon at one time not only to double but to play 2,3,4 or even five instruments I am convinced that there are musicians who have an attitude for this. I had a teacher Mr James Joseph principal Clarinet of the northern Sinfonia but she also moonlighted to the local Mecca dance hall as lead alto Initially not telling his straight players of the orchestra what he did i’m not in the symphony orchestra. Although he was a great Doubler he discouraged you to take up another instrument when you were in the early learning stages and I think there’s a lot of wisdom in that I might not have listened to my French teacher at school - what a pity I might be better when visiting the Selmer factory - I always listen to Mr Joseph who taught me much more than just playing the clarinet he was used to give me a lifelong love of music. Nowadays it’s respectable and play all the different styles of music and to be a Doubler So I hope that this video encourages people to try playing another instrument that is if they wish too Thank you both for your wisdom and enthusiasm - God bless you both - Bill - UK

    • @SamekMusic

      Interesting point raising the power of semantics to which the term 'doubler' being so closely linked to juggler can perhaps cast a negative light. Multi-instrumentalist is increasingly used and as a multi-instrumentalist myself, actually feel a more positive term! Thank you Bill!

    Thank you Victoria for your honesty and sharing some of your difficulties which most of us do not admit to you’ve been through seven years yet seven is the number of perfection you would’ve learnt much which you can pass on to others but number eight which follows is the number of new beginnings thank you for these little videos which has helped me during the lock up as I called it hopefully I’ve got Paul Harrises new book for Clarinet which one I saw the cover I thought of the old version of the Clarinet by Thurston and Frank I am looking forward to starting to study that book . I am looking forward to hearing your new recordings Victoria in the future. I am particularly interested in your recording of music by Joseph Horovitz One of your greatest achievements was Clarinet Classics. When I was a boy my teacher Mr James Joseph the first principal clarinet of the Northern Sinfonia Orchestra brought some old 78 rpm recordings of Louis Cahuzac Playing Nielsen’s Clarinet Concerto which he could no longer play because they were out of date technology. I spent many years trying to find that recording and eventually I found your clarinet classics thank you so much you will never know how many people you have blessed the side of eternity through your God given talent and enthusiasm and desire to help others. I look forward to seeing what you will do in your year of new beginnings - God bless you Victoria- Bill - UK

    PS love your playing and Teaching Victoria It must’ve been a very scary thing to happen to you when you’re looking for and during the Solo movement of the Quartet for the end of time. It must have been as though you experienced almost something of what the composer experienced in real life. Perhaps you should record the quartet It was also lovely to hear you play from the Thurston tutor book which I think has too much to offer chipping into it rather than just playing from the first page all the way through to the last - it also has some lovely orchestral excerpts. Great work Victoria thank you- Bill

    So, it’s the Reed that slaps, not the tongue. It seems like maybe it’s more of a sudden release of the tongue/Reed combination, and the Reed slaps back against the mpc table. Your description is different than Derek Brown’s.

    • @SamekMusic
      @SamekMusic Год назад

      There are different thoughts on this. Some players call is a tongue 'ram' where the tongue is forced against the reed, this movement also forces a blast of air into the mouthpiece achieving a pitch as well (Joshua Redman plays in this way). For me it is definitely (as you say) a combination but I am thinking of manipulating the reed more than it being a physical movement of my tongue. Thanks for the message, Chris.
