I really love the concept version of les mis since as much as i love the musical it feels like it's become more disneyfined over the years and i honestly hope to see a production that captures the more dark somber tone of the novel.

It’s super interesting to hear the French musical theater vocal style…it’s more classically influenced than us Anglophones, but simultaneously uses less “vocal techniques” or stunts than we do. They put emotional delivery and characterization front and center and I love how conversational this sounds. Et dieu merci that they opted for head voice over high belting; I wish and hope for the day when is Americans realize how much better and less distracting it is to do that. Merci merci merci dear poster ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

I like that this line remains in the French lyrics still. It sums up Javert's philosophy so well.

okay so i love it!! also, maybe sbd here could help me - i struggle with finding french versions of popular musicals (that werent originally written in french) and it makes me sad bc i really wanted to practice the language by listening to some shows that i already know. and im able to find songs from almost any musical in my native language, even though its much less "popular" then french. i would really looooove to listen to some songs that i know (so that i would understand what they're about) while learning new vocab. do u maybe have some links? anything that was on brodway will do actually :')

Jean Vallée is perfect as Javert, I can only half make out the lyrics (my high school French is super rusty), but his voice and performance of "Noir ou Blanc" perfectly captures Hugo's depiction of the character as a dogmatic misanthrope.

Funny you should say that because he made a song about Javert called "Javert t'es amoureux" after his time in the musical. Wish he was more well-known, his performance is indeed great.

I always wondered why Claude Michel and Alain Boubli never considered doing a film version of the show when it was in Paris still. They had a film director as the director of the show. Robert Houbien (might've misspelled the name) later made a film in 1982 based on the novel.

      1) Sadly the French musical theater scene wasn’t/isn’t big enough for it to be produced. This is an expensive show to put on live but even more so on film; sooo many set changes and specialized costumes and HMU and cast members. Considering how small the demand for musicals is in France there wouldn’t be great prospects of ROI, which is really truly the main thing producers care about ~at the end of the day~ 2) Les misérables is a HUGE emblem of French culture, to my knowledge everyone who grew up there know the story inside and out. I really don’t think there’s a parallel in American culture, especially since we constantly remake things or recycle IP. French musical theater ppl understand what this rendition is, but it could very easily backfire-especially since the French are pretty traditional and tend to place culture and/or politics front and center of conversations. So it could not only be a financial disaster but an epically ridiculed flop which could be career ending (or close to it). As much as I prefer this version, I get why they sold it to the English to translate and let Americans make the movie. I’m pretty sure it’d be impossible for a French film version to be as fleshed out, succe$$ful, and well-received.

Something I just don't understand in this version (At least it doesn't make sense to me) it's in Gavroche's death scene. I mean, how come can Javert be still alive in that sequence? Or could it happen after Javert's Suicide and not before? I really need some context here.

@@msb4838 Well, in both, the movie and the musical’s modern version Gavroche dies before Javert does. But in this first version it looks like Gavroche dies after Javert commits suicide, but it’s too weird because in Gavroche’s death scene we can hear Javert talking to him for a moment.

Thank you, Thank you so much for this soundtrack. Despite the lack of video, the few photos all along the musicals allow our minds to imagine what could have been this show in 1980. So lucky you are those who saw this show in 1980, when I was 10. Technicity helps also to go back to our souvenirs or to feel what we missed in time.

Translation: Javert: Valjean, at last, Your sentence you will serve, Monsieur le maire, You'll wear the chain you deserve. Valjean: Before you say another word, Javert, Before you chain me up like a slave again, Listen to me! There's a favor I must do. This woman dies, leaving behind a suffering child, I have sworn to help her, In heaven's name, three days are all I need. Then I'll return, you have my word, Then I'll return. Javert: Your words of a convict! I've hunted you across the years, Men like you cannot change. You can never change! Valjean: Believe of me what you will, There is a promise I must keep, You know nothing of my life, All I did was steal some bread, You know nothing of the world, It is not all black and white, Nothing will stop me from doing my duty, I am warning you, Javert, I am stronger than you by far, I know what I must do, If you will stand in my way, I am warning you, Javert, If I have to kill you here, I will do what must be done, To see my duty through. Javert: Men like me can never change, Anymore than men like you, No, 24601. I am who serves the law, You have no rights, You're under arrest 24601! Now your luck has turned around, Jean Valjean is lost and found, Dare you talk to me of crime, And the price you had to pay, Every man must choose his way, Every man is born in sin, You know nothing of Javert, I was born inside a cell, I was raised with scum like you, I was surrounded by outlaws too! Valjean: And this I swear by all I hold dear. Javert: You will not escape me again. Valjean: Cosette will have a father soon. Javert: Wherever you hide, I will be too Valjean: And she will know only happiness. Both: I swear to you, I will be there.

Translation: Valjean: That man is innocent, He is not Jean Valjean! Only I can save him, And to give myself up. But I have struggled for so long, Built and made up so much, Only to give it up, For a stray remorse? If I stay silent, I am damned. But if I speak, I am condemned. I only stole a loaf of bread In a moment of famine, And paid every crime For nineteen years, Until the last crouton, I escaped without a sou, I stole two candlesticks, From a bishop, a saint, To whom I owe the sense To be on this right path. If I stay silent, I am damned! But if I speak, I am condemned! I made my fortune upon A new way to make glass, I employed hundreds of workers Who love me And made me their mayor. If I stay silent, I am damned! But if I speak, I am condemned! What to do? Should I refuse to walk back into hell, Because I made my paradise on Earth? Cross out my past forevermore, And bask in oblivion, What to do? Should I save this man damned by error, Become Valjean again for my honor? Beg my forgiveness from him And end this new life I made for me, What to do? Can I abandon those who believe in me, Or the one who is blameless? If I do not denounce him, I cannot hide that I am him If God decided this for me, Then his decree is law for me There's nothing to do. I cannot hide, I am Jean Valjean! Here is the truth at last, Javert, An innocent was tried in my stead! Who am I? 24601!

Translation: Man: Help, Monsieur le Maire! Come one, come all! Old Fauchelevent is stuck under his cart! We should get him out of there quickly! His breathing is labored! He's choking, he's choking! Come all, quickly! Valjean: Does anyone have the strength and the heart? I offer five louis for the one who helps this man Even ten, twenty, for the one who wants to try, To serve as a lever from their misfortune, I will not let this man die in front of me, If none will do it, then I will myself! People: No, Monsieur le Maire! His poor life is not worth yours, And no one will miss him On this Earth! Don't do it, Monsieur le Maire! His poor life is not worth yours, Everyone will miss you! Javert: This for example, I cannot believe. That one could raise a cart with his bare hands, You are so strong, You remind me of someone from my past, A very old memory stirs, To tell you, Monsieur le Maire, I would not dare. Valjean: It is too late For you to stop. Javert: I have only known one other, To have done what you just did, A real workhorse, And a rascal Who broke his parole. His name is Jean Valjean I hunted him with all my choler For seventeen long years, But I likely was wrong in this instance To mistake you for Valjean. But we now caught the culprit Just three days ago. Valjean: You say you caught This escaped convict, Or so it seems. And how do you know it's this Valjean Who looks like me And why are you so certain, That it is he and not I? Javert: I recognized his face, I know it's him, He wears the brand, On his perfidious skin, I will testify, At his trial, Where he will be executed!

Thanks for this! I'm researching how the original show became the show in many languages around the world. My reading French isn't bad, but this confirms what I have got right and clears up stuff I don't understand.

Translation: Valjean: Just a moment, if you please. Set this woman free. Javert: But Monsieur le Maire! Valjean: I believe she did nothing wrong Take her to the hospital, not prison! Javert: But Monsieur le Maire! Fantine: Is this possible? Valjean: Go on. Fantine: My God! Valjean: Make it quick. Fantine: Ah! So it is you, Monsieur le Maire, I must have misheard. Valjean: I will send for your little girl. Fantine: He kicked me out of the factory, he had me fired. Valjean: You were relieved from the burden of your debts. Fantine: For clam's gossip, You scoundrel of a mayor! Valjean: You who have not ceased To be virtuous before God. Fantine: Are you an angel or a devil? I would rather die than cling to false hope, If you have to, let me fall further, I no longer feel anything. Misery leads to distress. Valjean: How could I have done this? Fantine: All these vices and the weakness Valjean: My God! Had I but known! Fantine: Misery unleashes the beast in man! Valjean: All the wrong I have done! Fantine: And the bird turns into a stray dog! Valjean: Let it be done as I ordered! Javert: But Monsieur le Maire! Valjean: I want to see no one else!

Translation: Javert: Tell me quickly what just happened, Who is dead and who killed him, Where I pass crime is extinguished, And Order is secure, Let everyone beware, For I always get my way, I reward those who report With civic duties. Batanbois: Inspector, it is that girl, Who hit me savagely, For only a few kind words, For a simple compliment. Javert: Take this ride out And put her in prison, Let us see if she regains her righteousness As well as her reason. Fantine: Inspector, please spare me, I regret all what I did. My little girl is sick, Please let me remain free. All: Take this ride out And put her in prison, Let us see if she regains her righteousness As well as her reason. Fantine: Inspector, I am sick, Sometimes I cough up blood. Javert: If you think I will believe, All these poor arguments When we want to be honest There is always a way We work with our heads Where we work with our hands It's less certain, but much harder To get you on the right path.

Ah! C'est pour demain!

Translation: Enjolras: For the will of the people, And for the health of the progress, Fill up your heart with rebel wine, And till tomorrow, faithful friend! If the beating of your heart Is as strong as the beating drums, It means that hope still does exist For the average man. Combeferre: We now build the barricade, The symbol of a new era which dawns, We leave on a crusade, To the heart of the land of France. Courfeyrac: We are henceforth the soldiers Of an army that will advance! All: For the will of the people, And for the health of the progress, Fill up your heart with rebel wine, And till tomorrow, faithful friend! If the beating of your heart Is as strong as the beating drums, It means that hope still does exist For the average man. Feuilly: For the will of the people, I am ready to give my will as well. If some must die for it, Then I want to be the first, Whose name shall be written Upon the monument of hope! All: For the will of the people, And for the health of the progress, Fill up your heart with rebel wine, And till tomorrow, faithful friend! If the beating of your heart Is as strong as the beating drums, It means that hope still does exist For the average man. Reprise: For the will of the people, None can extinguish our voice, And so the song will ring out forever As it had so long before, We wish that our light will Penetrate the mask of night, To illuminate our land And to change our lives. The glorious day will come, When on its way to the ideal, Mankind will progress from evil to good And from falsehoods to truth, A dream may yet die, But hope lives on forever! Will you join in our crusade, Of those with hopes for humanity? For every fallen barricade, One hundred more will rise again, For the will of the people, We hear the sound of distant drums, Announcing the future that they bring When tomorrow comes! Will you join in our crusade, Of those with hopes for humanity? For every fallen barricade, One hundred more will rise again, For the will of the people, We hear the sound of distant drums, Announcing the future that they bring When tomorrow comes! Ah! Tomorrow comes!

Did this production not have Eponine's On My Own? Sorry, just curious.

Kind of, instead of Éponine being the one singing it it's Fantine.

In the original version, Eponine song was not ”on my own” (with other lyrics, it was ”La misère” sung by Fantine, here the second song) but ”l'un vers l'autre ”. This song has been erased from the show in later versions and replaced by on my own (which was given to Eponine).

@@JoeyArmstrong2800 you're maybe right, I can't choose, I love both. But they picked up On My Own because it was a stronger theme for the musical on stage, a showstopper.

@@emmanuelfani5385 Maybe after hearing "On My Own" for the 800th million time it starts to get on my nerves. l'un vers l'autre is simple with a hauntingly beautiful melody much more fitting for Eponine's character but I guess Act II needed a show stopper.
