I am really enjoying these videos. I am new to appreciating the work of John Ruskin. Thanks so much for making these available!

I also believe that one of the things Ruskin shows us through his art and his writings on the importance of appreciating it, and mostly on learning to see...his greatest message was about leading us to appreciate the grand mysteries of the natural world and to simply stand in awe of it and fall in love with it so that we yearn to protect it and our healthy lives within it. I wish mystery had more weight in general... but we humans always feel like we must figure things out. I choose to look at Ruskin's private, complicated and very human and imperfect life as mystery. Ann, I completely agree with your thoughts about making Ruskin more accessible. Sara recently sent us a link to a short film on Ruskin and I shared it with my students---I thought it did a fabulous job of showing Ruskin's relevance and making his work accessible. One student affirmed: "I enjoyed this so much! I always thought of Ruskin as a stuffy, privileged old Victorian writer that had no relevance today. Boy was I wrong. I want to know more!" We have more work to do!

Thank you for this thoughtful and thought-provoking presentation, Ann. I really enjoyed it. One truth here is that we will never know the truth about the very personal and intimate lives of our "heroes" from the past, unless they left us with very clear diaries--and even then we know that people only write down what they wish for us to know. The other truth is that Ruskin did leave us with incredibly rich documentation of his thoughts, inquiries and philosophies. I'd love to see a movie about that, but that focus likely would not sell. :) Your talk had me thinking of Emily Dickinson, whose life and work I have studied extensively. I've read so many interpretations of her life, her sexuality, her furtive intentions locked within her words. The fact is...it's all conjecture. We will never truly know. I choose to focus on what we do know... the words she wrote down, even the Master Letters, her beautiful gift of language and her ability to use it to affect and grow the capacity of the human heart. Your talk also affirmed my opinion of Hollywood's gift...sensationalizing just about everything. I will share this with my students. Thank you!

This is incredibly insightful and in-depth lecture on Proust and Ruskin. I'd like to thank generosity and kindness of Ruskin Art Club for making these dazzling lectures available online. I'm currently reading Damian Searls's award-wining translation (he won 2019 Helen and Kurt Wolff Prize) for another classic book by German author, Uwe Johnson's "Anniversaries: From a Year in the Life of Gesine Cresspahl" (New York Review Books). I'm pleased to find out on here that he also translated Proust's book on Ruskin. I will now add this new translation for my reading list. I hope one day Searls will translate Proust's unfinished novel, Jean Santeuil.

The first meeting that engages me. Proust is my 6th of 7 favorite writers. I prefer to read him in French. Combray in French⁷ is delicious reading. I have Ruskin's "Sesame and Lilies." I shall reread this lovely little book, after finishing John Dryden's translation of "The Aeneid."

Thank you Ted Bosley for this beautiful account of the S.F. Swedenborgian church. You capture perfectly its history and architecture, as well as its impact on you personally, and you made us feel the spirit of the church that touched people during Joseph Worcester's lifetime and continues to this day.
