First GoPro flight with OSD - Artificial Horizon and Altitude
The scenic cut. First conversion for On Screen Display. Good to confirm the height I usually fly to. Much happier with stability of this drone using another battery box.

Want Artificial Horizon - OSD with BetaFlight and SpeedyBee F405 after wiring upgrade.
Просмотров 836День назад
First effort with SpeedyBee F405 Flight Stack and Betaflight was focused on good flight setup and audio feedback for my RadioMaster Pocket with ELRS. Initially I had no interest in OSD, so I wired the camera video out directly to the VTX. Now flying acro, looking to see an Artificial Horizon on Ground Station screen or in goggles. A bonus has been adding a display of altitude from the barometer...
Thoughts on risks, rewards and psychology of flying

Made time for a couple of quick flights early this morning before the heat set in. Checked out a couple of repaired quadcopters and reflected on the nature of controlled flight before and after the main flight with my current favourite craft. Still happy with my bulky but light weight camera housing.
Ditched motor test - flying ugly
Просмотров 15821 день назад
Realized that I had not tested the motors on the drone that crashed into the sea three months ago. Decided on a quick and dirty test build before I selected a frame the host the motors and the new replacement SpeedyBee F405 V4 flight stack.
Maslins North - Bigger quad and more sky
Просмотров 66Месяц назад
Flying another quad powered by a recycled SpeedyBee F405 V3 and ELRS. Bit faster with 7 inch props and bigger motors. Feels a better fit for cruising open spaces. Near the old sand mine at Maslins, just south of Orchre Point later the same day in late November 2024.

First 4S flight - last Insta360 GO2 cinematic run?
Просмотров 3402 месяца назад
Blew the dust off my Insta360 GO2 for an fpv run. Wanted a more streamlined profile to try a 4S battery for the first time. Rediscovered why I shelved the GO2 and use GoPro Black 7s instead. Crashed this drone on next flight. Waiting for another SpeedyBee F405 V3 stack for a rebuild.
First GoPro flight Cinematic edit - followed by a Facelift!

Not good flying weather this week. Decided to put up the 4 min first flight with GoPro as a Cinematic edit, prefaced with the all black facelift. Black foam replaced white, and a black skin over the blue plastic cover. My first 4S battery arrived today.

South of HMAS Hobart Memorial Lookout - trouble free cinematic flying

Finally got back to a trouble free flight day. A rare find along a coastline south of Adelaide of a spot we have not flown before. HMAS Hobart was a guided missile destroyer active from 1965. The ship was sunk as a dive wreck on 5 November 2002 in Yankalilla Bay, South Australia. The ships anchor points to the wreck, about 4km onshore.

Not much flying lately with bad weather. Turns out having the arming switch right next to the Angle/Acro mode switch is a bad idea. Reminded of a Far Side comic. I'm mostly amazed at the video stability in-flight, compared to say, your helmet camera!! So hard to have small, light cameras be stable but you sure got some nice smooth control fliming in flight. I'm just a nightscape timelapser, my camera alone weighs more than your equipment AND those two beach chairs! But you made this drone filming look endlessly fun! Nice job!

Spent many years trying different things to reduce vibration when in flight. The first thing was finding well balanced props. Next home made foam camera pods. They reduce vibration, protect cameras and float. The final element had been the emergence of cameras with effective stabilization. For me, the GoPro 7 remains a very good unit. Newer models are heavier and do not have better performance. Smaller more recent "thumb" style cameras can not yet match the GoPro 7 for stabilization.

@@skybug3 That's GOOD info, thanks. Time for me to rid myself of my old 1080p stuff that once upon a time was state of the art! Long before drones I shot 100 miles of kiteboarding from a jittery helmet cam, and spend those many hours in Post trying to stabilize! If you been doing this long, you'll remember those days!! But, I'm stoked for you because the whole fun of it, is steady improvements and that is what "gets us out there" to go for it! Oh, and in my old days, I used gel-pods, actually soap beads that are pretty tough, instead of foam. Gotta be something better now tho! LOL! Good luck.

I started with a cheap generic game controller with a usb cable when I was learning acro with the FPVFreerider simulator, but found it did' not feel like a real fpv controller with proper gimbals. There may be less expensive fpv controllers than the RadioMaster Pocket that I use, but I have not tried them. Make sure they have a USB port to connect to a computer. The Pocket has 2 USB ports, one for charging the internal batteries, and another on the top for computer connection. When the Pocket is turned on and a USB cable connected to a computer is inserted, there is a choice of modes to select - Joystick, USB Storage etc. I find it easy to use. If you find a cheaper controller than the Pocket, search RUclips to check if anyone can demonstrate successful use of it with a SIM.

Big changes to my flying since I made this video. After buying a Nano RM ELRS module and flying drones with SpeedyBee F405 FCs, I'm hooked! The range with 1W goes way beyond any distance I fly, and the penetration is also great. Now I've made the breakthrough to acro mode, I will rarely fly my Bugs3 based drones. I bought the ELRS version of the Pocket thinking that 250Mw would be adequate for most of my flying, and would give me a backup if the first Pocket failed. Very happy with performance so far. Betaflight has got easier for me to use over the last 4 years, and installing the VTX and RX with plugs so I can disconnect if not needed during configuration is a simple solution to the over heating problem.

Loved the footage covering the sea floor along with the Crustacean's that inhabit this area on the Fleurieu Peninsula, looking forward to seeing more in the future perhaps around the wreck of the HMAS Hobart?
