Our goals at 12:28 and 34:30
11:45 It's harder without having d-pairs, but let's try to make sure we communicate which dman is taking which side so they know who's responsible for taking the front of the net.
35:06 Nice 2 on 1 at the end of the period.
12:34 Mikey bet on the other team ;p
45:25 Save of the game
Armen on a mission 51:35
36:40 is also a really good sequence for us to watch. Shot after shot after shot. Is there anything obvious we could have done differently on each of these to get it in the net?
This was the point where I knew it wasn't going to be our day. I wouldn't change much about the shots that came after the faceoff. Any time we can win a faceoff in the offensive zone and get a quick shot is a good play in my opinion. However, the one thing that all of those shots had in common was that they didn't require the goalie to make much lateral movement in order to stop them. I think in general that's what we need to focus on in the offensive zone, setting up plays and finding soft spots in the defense on the opposite side of the goalie from where the puck is in play.
39:38 #9 was fast on the draw and did the same face-off move every time. Maybe we can try to keep this in mind for the next time we play these guys.
On faceoffs, I think we should have the forward not taking the draw skate to the far side of the net and stop about a foot in front of the goal. This would leave the opportunity open for a backdoor pass across the front of the crease, or put the forward in position to retrieve the puck if it gets rimmed around behind the net. For example, the play at 27:23, we had no coverage on the right side of the net which could have led to an easy tap in off the rebound, or at least helped us keep possession. The defenseman closest to the boards should line up within a stick length of the boards in order to seal it off. In general, having everyone on the court know where everyone else is going when the puck drops will help us on the many occasions where there's a scramble for the puck after the drop.
I don't particularly like how things ended after the play starting on 35:23, but I think this was a good way to break into their zone with speed [Defenseman -> stationary forward -> defenseman skating to red line]
I'm so proud of 6:50 but too bad I missed that five-hole... :(
with such a high number of goals against, this would probably be a good video to review our defensive strategy. I'll try to post timestamps tonight of all our goals against so we can take a look
Really? Off side call at 36:22 was questionable. I remember waiting for the puck to cross the line on that play.
41:47 I'm starting to question whether our strategy of going to the net isn't just clogging up the middle for us and preventing more opportunities than its creating. However, if we are crashing the net, we need to bend our knees, get our hips low to establish position, and keep our sticks on the court and ready to shoot/deflect the puck at all times. Lifting your stick up to push the defender is essentially doing his work for him.
40:10 Something worth talking about. Not sure whose responsibility it was to cover #5 but I distinctly remember being torn here between if I should abandon #7 at the point or drop all the way back in our zone to cover #5 if he got a pass. You can see me frozen in thought and then eventually I choose to go for it and cover #5. In hindsight after watching this video, I still think covering #5 was a good idea given the situation. What was NOT a good idea was getting stuck behind the net in a battle for the puck. Not only did this put me way back in our zone...the original guy I had moved in to guard wasn't even there anymore. I think he ended up drifting back to the front of the goal and scoring that one on us. Lesson: Don't do that anymore. Also we should have really had #5 covered.
+bananax182 We should have one of our dmen in front of the net guarding against exactly what wound up happening in that situation at all times. In general, I don't think we should commit more than one defense to a puck battle behind our net. If the other team wins a battle back there, they're still not in a position to be a threat to score. The only threat in that situation is overcommitting our defense and leaving a guy alone in front of the net. Given that we did overcommit, I think you were right to drop down to cover the slot. Looking at it in detail, I think the real break down occurred at 40:27 when you were trying to get control of the puck and Morgan decided to go practice his figure skating in the corner instead of rotating over to cover the slot :) Not to pick on Morgan, I think he was trying to make himself available along the boards for a clear, but we have to keep in mind that we need to have someone taking away the slot and its really the job of the defensemen.
+bananax182 I think the main issue is that we shouldn't commit more than one defensemen to a puck battle behind our net. Even if the other team gets control of the puck, they're not in a position to score. The only threat in that situation is if we leave someone open in the slot, which is exactly what wound up happening. On this particular play, since we had already over committed our dmen, I think you were right to drop down to cover the slot Jay. In my opinion, the real breakdown occurred at 40:27 when you were trying to get control of the puck, and instead of replacing you in the slot, Morgan decided to go practice his figure skating in the corner :) Not to pick on Morgan, I assume he was trying to make himself available for a clearing pass. However, we need to keep in mind that its the defensemen's job to clear the front of the net first and foremost.
My bad at 43:00 for swinging out. I know what I was thinking; I wanted to swing around the other side of the goalie to give myself more net to hit if I got a pass. Problem is, the defender cut between me and the pass (and it looks like I didn't even notice him). I'll try to do better in the future with knowing where the defender is and/or just heading straight for the net.
29:27 Save of the Year! Way to go Dave!
The breakout play between Sean and Justin around 20:26 is something I think we should use as much as we can. Perfect way to get the puck to someone with speed entering the offensive zone.
2:43 and 7:23 These are examples of possessions where we could have made a better shot selection. 2:43 I should have gave that puck to Justin and let him cycle it back out, or find me cutting to the net. Instead, I took a lazy shot that had almost no chance of going in or creating a rebound, even if it had gotten through. 7:23 If Morgan makes that pass to Justin as soon as he crosses the line, Justin has a breakaway. Still good play to get the puck deep, but from that point it needs to get cycled back out to the point, or across the middle. In this case, I think Vince would be better off to set up in the middle of the slot, or to the left of the goalie. Where he is won't give him that great of an angle even if he does get the puck. The shot that was taken was from an angle that rarely goes in or creates a rebound, and often it winds up missing and rimming out to create a odd man rush in the other direction.
1:34 Not only is this fun to watch Vince put the guy that tried to hit him on his ass, its also a great example of what I was referring to in the team email about making a quick pass once the puck is over the red line. This allowed Jay to get the puck with time and space to think about his options. Even though this particular play got broken up, we should be able to get more good looks like this if we keep working to find the open man in transition.
46:52 This is a great example of Jesse using the dump in to start cycling the puck deep in their zone, which led to a good scoring chance for Vince.
Two things: 1. I think we looked decent. I see us trying a lot of things and not really repeating any one mistake over and over. Several of us had some good chances. 2. Is this move the defenseman (#3) pulls on me at 37:31 legal? Tying up my legs by holding a stick at my crotch? I remember being unable to position myself to screen/tip, but didn't know what to make of it at the time.
+bananax182 1. I agree, I feel like we generated the majority of the quality scoring opportunities. We just need to do a little better at converting our chances, but overall I think that was a solid performance. 2. Looks like he gave you the old can opener. I doubt you're going to get that call in this league, so I'd say the best thing to do is turn your hips real quick and rip the stick out of his hand. Maybe you'll fall in the process and get a tripping call :)
Sean, nice pass at 16:37. I can't believe I could not stuff that empty net on my backhand. I had the goalie beat.
+cinvin t That was a great move Vince. Its hard to tell, but it almost looks like the goalie somehow got his glove on it and pushed it just wide of the net. Two great plays in one!
In the future, if I'm ever on a breakaway like at 9:34, and I have support from one of you, feel free to scream at me for a pass. I'd much prefer to drop/pass the puck than try to go 1-on-1 w/ the goalie. Unless I get some time to seriously practice for breakaways/shootouts, I think we'll have better luck scoring if I unexpectedly drop/pass and screen. I had about ~1 clean breakaway per game last season but can't seem to finish; only had 1 goal that way.
+bananax182 Thanks Jay, I was going to make the exact same comment. For me, the example was on the play at 44:45 where I missed Cliff being wide open trailing the play. Don't be shy and think of it as demanding the puck, you're just helping the puck carrier identify where his help is located. I find the best way is to tap your stick since it makes a easily recognizable sound and also gives the puck carrier a target to aim for.
+bananax182 I also had some advice for your breakaways, Jay. As soon as you recognize you're on a breakaway try to decide immediately if you're going to shoot, or deke based on how much time you have. I think if you're under pressure, its better to get off a quick shot, and deke when you have more time. If you're going to shoot, its probably best to get your shot off no closer than the hash marks. In the example you cited, I think you were right to try to bring it closer, but next time try to wait out the goalie just a little longer and bring the puck all away across the crease to give yourself a better angle like Vince did on his goal at 15:23
+spearson103 That was a nice goal, Vince
Am I taking crazy pills or did #12 rob me of my goal at 42:40 by diving into the crease, hand swatting the puck, and moving the goal? Disallowed in the game, but it counts in my heart.
+bananax182 i think the net was pushed off the same time the puck was swatted out.
hehe...tag-teaming the screening at 22:18
kinda mind blowing how quickly my turnover at 42:45 turned into a goal for them. I'll look for the pass next time or skate deeper in, but there's also gotta be more we can do to prevent easy breakouts like that. Edit: Yeah, i should have skated deeper or even passed that across/around. I was right in the middle of all four of them.
+bananax182 Good observation. This is a perfect example of how we need to condition ourselves to look up as soon as we get the puck because Jesse and Cliff had a two on one with a quick pass in that spot. Even throwing it on net might have created a scoring opportunity. However, the last dman back has to play that more conservatively in case it gets turned over up high like that. If Morgan had been in position it would have at least slowed them down enough to give you a chance to get back and break up the play.
