    4:22 yeah I’m all too familiar with that pain. The only school I was accepted into out of eight I applied to was UT Austin because I was fortunate enough to have auto admit, and, even then, I was rejected from mechanical engineering which hurt significantly more than anything else because I never seriously considered I’d be rejected from engineering with my 4.0, state swimmer status, and by that point, 6 AP classes including calc BC and AP lang all of which I had gotten A’s in. The day I found out I was rejected I was genuinely so shocked that I just didn’t have anything to say I just sat down at my PC and booted up a game so I could distract myself from life because I did think of going to community college and then transferring, but ultimately decided it would be easier to fight through UT’s internal transfer process than to go through another round of applications. I won’t deny I’m still very salty and bitter about it, but I refuse to let it knock me down.

    Hey Arnav - thank-you very much for putting yourself out there on your most vunerable moments. I was feeling very bad on your behalf - as you were sharing your results. You had great stats and you deserved better, at least imho. I also like how you did not lose hope and how you have more than salvaged the situation. Great for not losing courage and for "keeping on keeping on". Best of Luck to you in your future as well.

    Man I got rolled by admissions this year so hard as an indian cs (still in US) applicant i dont even know what to say. I really put thought into everything about my application and thought that my essays were truly unique. Everything I wrote felt so genuine and I did not expect things to go the way they did. Looking at some of the people who got into these top unis with worse stats and ecs, it just feels so unfair. And no way in hell is affirmative action not a thing I swear these colleges got all the loopholes in the world.

I am going to be going to a state school instead when i feel like i have done so much during hs to get in with so many aps and extracurriculars that made great impact. I am not disappointed but I am sad that i worked my whole life for this. I am thinking of transferring after watching this video. I can maybe get you got rejected by Ivies and Stanford, USC, but I know many with way lower SAT and GPA got into UT Austin (same rave as you). You got rejected by lame Michigan? Don't buy it. Georgia Tech is a joke school! No way were you rejected unless you didnt complete your application essay. Why didn't you apply to UCLA, UCB, UCSB, UCSD, Vanderbilt, U of Florida?

    You state one of your problems: You didn't know how to play the game. Someone could have crafted a great essay for you, first generation growing up barefoot on hard back clay floors in a rural village constantly afflicted with foot parasites (I'm adding some 'get in' drama). Second, and frankly, especially these top-tier schools hate top-performing Asian groups. You're fairly light-skinned, but especially dark-skinned Indians have committed the sin of being dark-skinned, non-western culture, some not speaking English properly which means you should underperform but instead you over perform. That just doesn't fit the oppressor-oppressed narrative. Some of that may change, see recent "DEI" news, but it's pretty clear that "applying while Asian" is now like "Applying while Jewish" used to be -- they don't want you, you perform too well. Dark or yellow-hued Asians are especially hated because they "should" be oppressed but they outperform and thereby indicate the truth: performance is much more cultural practices than any supposed prejudiced and in fact, the system has become racist in the name of fighting racism. Note that many schools got rid of or are getting rid of SAT/GRE because they clearly show the above and expose the existing racism. Those essays are constructed in a way to weed out high performers from the "wrong" groups. You didn't even know this game was being played which is another way of being excluded. It is also true that an "A" grade at a competitive high school is way harder than some subpar high school. Again, SATs would help. I sort of like schools like ASU what just take and educate everyone. These days, you can do almost all your highschool and much of your college just using RUclips and some online texts and example questions to study. Then just go to college to make friends/network/help people. That said, for several years, I was on the masters admissions committee at the highest ranking school in CS. I could have filled the whole class from perfect scores. Instead, I set thresholds on various test scores of people who just were not high enough. I set thresholds of people who were perfect in all scores from top schools. They were in. Didn't even read their essays. Then the middle group, I read the essays. I wasn't interested in pure BS: "I was president of my math club, bla bla blah", instead I looked for real things. One guy was in the SF musicians union because he earned money as a professional musician. That's unusual, that was an accept. Others had started and run/ran real businesses, with real funding, real products. Others had made meaningful contributions to open source. A person had done real technical work on an archeological site and was listed as a co-author on some of their papers. My favorite was a guy who got As then Cs in his Universities alternating. Oh, he fought for 5(!) tours in Iraq. I personally stood up and argued him in. So, in that group of non-perfect scores, there were real achievements, real, not BS, interests. Those were "accepts"

  • @aryag1989
    @aryag1989 9 месяцев назад

    from what i've heard from other people is this: the college you do get into absolutely matters, but not to the extent most people make it out to be. If you do get into a prestigious school, then good for you, the name does carry that presitge and gives you a boost in internship/job applications more so than a safety. However, just because you do not go to a prestigious university and don't get this boost you can still make up for it but it will most likely take more work to get to the same place others are if they went to a more prestigious university. So in the end, you can still recover fairly easily.

I'm the prime example of someone who grinded in HS, got into 5 Ivies (ultimately chose Brown) + completely took it for granted that I was at an Ivy + thought that a great job/career would fall into my lap as a result of the Brown alumni network (which is non-existent compared to the other Ivies) ... had a rude professional awakening/reckoning throughout my 20s on Wall St + really didn't see any real success until my 30s 😒

    Your situation is interesting and relates to mine a few years after actually finishing up with undergrad. It sounds like you are pursuing a finance career judging by your internships. I’m actually VERY curious how you got those internships. To be fair, I was supposed to recruit for sn internship during Covid so that kind of derailed my trajectory. I graduated with a finance degree also from WSU. Now, I am planning on getting a masters (potentially from UW) so I walk curious how you were able to land those internships, and how you liked it at UW even though you were there for a year.

    Hey, im kinda late to this but i really relate to you. Im highschool class of 2023 and I applied to around 8 school for Finance and CompSci. Compsci was mainly a fall back though, Finance was what I was really interested in. I got waitlisted and then rejected from SMU, capped from UT Austin, accepted to IU as a direct admit. I couldn't go to IU though cause i got really sick after graduating so I had to go to my local state school UT Dallas. I like it here but there's always a feeling like I should be somewhere better. My stats were mid compared to you but I had a 1420 SAT and a 3.7 UW. Im starting my spring semester of my freshman year at UTD and I'm not sure whether or not I should try and transfer to IU in the fall again or just stay where I am. If I go to IU, I'm going to have to do the standard admission process meaning I'm a pre-business major essentially for 1 year because transfers don't have direct admissions regardless of if you got in HS. Anyway, i was wondering what your thoughts were on this. My goal is to go into high finance after undergrad possibly consulting and UTD isn't really known for that.

    I think this is most realistic college decision opening on RUclips. I was in the same boat as you, didn’t accepted to much of anything except one school. • @THEmfGOBLIN
      @THEmfGOBLIN 7 месяцев назад

      @@sailuvijl6621 Yeah, so a lot of the schools will have their credit requirements listed on their website and some will also have a credit equivalent chart to help see which courses you’ll be able to take at your community college or really any other university. So I choose like 3-4 schools that I really wanted to go to and instead of following exactly what my original university required, I just choose the courses that I knew were going to transfer. So for example the first school I attended required me to take Calc 2 and 3 while the school that i wanted transfer to required Calc 2 and Business Stats, so i just followed what i knew would transfer. But even if you take courses that aren’t necessarily going to count towards your major, like if i took calc 3, they’d still count towards an elective, so it’s not like you took a class for no reason. Let me know if that makes sense or not, let me know if you have any other questions

    Hey everyone! I just saw that this video blew up and wanted to thank you all for watching! I have additional videos on the way, so subscribe if you're interested! Based on your guys' comments, I also want to clarify some things: 1) There were a lot of things I could have done better on my application. I didn't describe what I did in my leadership positions very well and even thought I committed a LOT of time and energy in student government and speech and debate, I couldn't fully convey that within the 150 characters provided. Describing your activities well and framing them to build a narrative that makes it easier for admissions officers to “sell you” to the rest of team is extremely important. 2) My essays were subpar and essays will make or break your whole application. Coming from a large public school that focused largely on making sure kids graduated rather than sending them to top-tier universities, I didn't have any knowledge on how my essays should have been written. There's an entire game that needs to be played with college applications, and I didn't have the resources to understand that, especially being a first-generation immigrant and the first child. Most importantly, though, I procrastinated tremendously and didn't take the process super seriously because deep down, I felt like i could succeed no matter where I went to college. 3) After transferring, I learned that the reality is that all of these top private institutions fill up half of their class with kids from what seems like ~40-50 high schools (largely boarding schools such as Deerfield, Andover, Choate, Philips Exeter, etc.) -- these are schools I didn't even know existed coming from extremely suburban Washington State. A good portion of the class is also filled by athletes and legacy students. Coming from a no-name public school discredited a lot of my extracurriculars as admissions officers had no record to show that kids from my school would succeed at their institution or whether these ECs even meant anything. It's not even a private school thing -- if I did the same activities at a competitive public school in the Bay Area, my application would have been perceived much more positively. This is important to understand as a lot of college decision videos on RUclips are from kids who are already going to great high schools, which is why my process might look different. One sidenote: if you're going to a public high school that isn't extremely reputable, focus on getting a high SAT score as your GPA is less meaningful and also try to do extracurriculars outside of your school. I hope that this helped and let me know if you have any more questions! Stay tuned for more content!

      I definitely can relate to this a lot especially the focusing on making sure kids graduated part. I come from a small town and am currently going through the application process, while I'm not exactly rejected from every school, my results are definitely disappointing to say the least compared to some other people with similar stats. My counselor also never told us how to write essays and I definitely feel like my essays are lacking. My high school is also relatively new and we've barely sent anyone to schools out of state nor any ivy's so I'm currently in some uncharted territory
