I attended the seminar and remember when he spoke of blind spots. My parents felt that I had a problem with "Blind Obedience" but now I see that Gothard had got people to follow him blindly.

Any Christian church or Catholic cathedral that has a preacher or a priest who puts his ego and self importance above the Gospel and our Lord Jesus Christ should be avoided at all costs. Preaching and Teaching the principles of salvation as put down in the Scriptures and is the good news, the Gospel must be the only tenet of the church. Everything else follows the Gospel. As for preachers and priests telling others how to live, that's a road they should avoid unless they're without sin ? Study the Scriptures yourself. The Word will teach you all you need to know.

That "umbrella" teaching is the same thing we used to hear from the group in Florida. They told members who they could or couldn't date, what pictures they could have on their walls, etc. Extreme abuse of authority. It's not just this guy Bill Gothard who taught that stuff, but I remember his name being big back in the hippie days.

Sounds like a video on feminists revolt. Most being interviewed are women. How about interviewing a balanced view and ask people who supported it. Sounds biblical the principles but the teacher was probably not the best. Morality is never bad, legalism is.

A religious group is not the same as a Christ - centered group that values everyone. Religious groups can be any form of religion - Hindu, Mormonism, Jehovah's Witness. The Christian religion is based on the actions of Jesus and his disciples, Paul, etc. Paul describes the characteristics necessary to be a leader in some of his letters. He honors both men and women who were leaders in the church. Both men and women are listed in Hebrews as being extraordinary because their faith. He also writes about not focusing on legalism, what you eat, what you wear (Jesus), but to be focused on matters of the heart. Men are not to lord their authority over their wives or their daughters. They are to love them unconditionally as Christ loved the church. That's the issue with Bill Gothard. There are unhealthy, over controlling boundaries, and healthy boundaries. Instead of these men (Bill Gothard) focusing on their own habits of the heart, their own faults, they seek to control others. It's similar to the Pharisees and the Sadducees: We don't become holy and righteous and just because we follow the law, observe all of these rules, wear scripture outside our garments. Jesus does not call us to observe rules, or to be justified by following the law. We can't. Jesus came to set us free from the law and from legalism by dying on a cross for our sins.

Terrible to tell young people they are going to hell if they leave the Amish community. It’s sad that they only go to school only up to the eighth grade. I think not having a phone for emergencies is not good because it can mean life and death.

It’s common knowledge that amish is all about community and their faith. But strong community means less personal freedom ...they build, work, celebrate all together. There is no place for individuals interest, free thinking and less freedom. This is why my parent left our communist .

Shunning is the Amish community device for maintaining order through social control by threat of this extreme social banishment. Not something Jesus taught us to do. And for Amish it could be worse than death because they are taught to shun the outside world so that there is no place to go and no one to turn to when you are shunned by your Amish community. Formal education does not exceed the 8th grade typically in an Amish community - little preparation for the world of the "English".
