19-Year-Old ROGER FEDERER defeats King Of Wimbledon (2001)
Federer, just 19 years old at the time, faced Sampras in the fourth round of Wimbledon. At the time, Sampras was considered one of the greatest tennis players of all time and had won seven Wimbledon titles, setting a tournament record.
The victory over Sampras represented a generational shift in tennis. Sampras was considered the dominant player of the 1990s, and his defeat of the young Federer marked the beginning of a new era in the sport.

The last Grand Slam Final between Federer and Nadal. When the original goat met the new goat
quand le tennis etait "classe"
This is an tennis orgasm
todays tennis is far more fun to watch
Out of big 3, nadal and federer look absolute stunning when they play tennis while djokovic may be the better player but he looks the most boring player to me when he plays tennis. Tennis looks beautiful and complete when they both play tennis.
The new king of grass courts had arrived and delivered, in this match. A fantastic fiver setter match. Both played equally well though. Pete Sampras came to the realization that his winning days may be limited, with such new talent.
One of the BEST matches I've ever seen! Loved Pete!😊
This had to be one of the most exciting Wimbledon matches of all time. Neither Sampras or Federer made it into the final in 2001, but Sampras had just won 4 Wimbledon titles in a role. Although Sampras was no longer in his prime and retired 2 years later, he did reach the final of two more US Open Grand Slam's after this loss.
What a match..one can see and enjoy this umpteen times.
I remember this game to this day. Pete lost to his unforced errors, not Federer. Federer played brilliantly but it was Petes' errors that did him in.
his shoes are precious than my life
the days of serve and volley went out the door once Fed came on board. Baseliners have ruled since. Agassi continued to thrive when Pete retired but couldn't get past Fed nor Nadal.
Even after a 5 set match Federer looked clean and proper. The man sweat coolness.
The King of Tennis still reigning strong after nearly 20yrs!!! Dominic Thiem has my utmost respect! Haven’t seen a 1 hand backhand like him dominate under top 10 since RF!
Pistol Pete, wow, los dos jugaban un tennis muy parecido
Al mirar las estadísticas nadie se imagina que fue un choque irrepetible de dos de los mejores exponentes de su epoca
Did they play a hand more than 3 shots?? This thing is a pain to watch..more than 5mnts..
The end of the neanderthal tennis era.
19 year old Federer already looking like 42 in this, damn 😐
If even one of these ladies was not around the other would have one 36 grand slams. They are the two best of all time.
Sampras was best on grass ever
That headline
Nothing to say anymore…Hut ab!! Enjoy…Timeline positive….🍀❤️❤️🍀👋
Very bad stile of play in 2001 y
I never appreciated Sampras enough when he played, shame that, he was a proper legend! Federer though, you could see even before this match what was to come.
23 years later and still one of the most enjoyable matches we'll ever see
As his opponents always say...first he takes your legs....then he destroys your confidence .....then he takes your mind.....then he breaks your heart....then he ruthlessly robs your soul....and when the destruction is over...he is back to being the sweetest, kindest, most humble human being in the world of sports. Rafa is an enigma within an enigma...that can't be solved or duplicated again. As a Yinzer (Pittsburgh sports maniac) I really know sports....since a very young age....I'd say Ali did this to opponents...but Rafa since his teens has honed this particular brand of ruthless agony on the court....while somehow staying the most honorable and human man in the world of sports.
19 year old Sampras would beat 19 year old Federer
That was awesome, I wish Nadal n Theim had more years to do that again!
Federer my all time favourite in Tennis
The crowd fkd this game up proper.
Was making errors so much more easier back then???
Epic battle! That backhand from federer is a killer!
nadal looks like Sans from undertale...
In love with the line callbacks. Not sure how it works, but very dramatic.
Federer had the same two match points situation against Djokovic some years back at one of those Wimbledon Final, but wasn't able to convert and lost.
It is interesting to note that Federer did not apologize for the point at 9:28.
Watch the video. Sampras could play and be exceptional in any era.
Rafael Nadal N01 gentilman talented honesty Handsham player in the world forever ever
Absolute magic
their serves are extraordinary, the balls look so fast the moment it leaves their rackets
What a shame, one serious injury ends a career.
Man Nadal was dreadful at the net in this match
Are you serious? Show the match highlights and leave out match point? WTH?
Wild scenes boys.
I can't believe this is the only time these two faced each other. I think it says a lot about both of them that it was this close, Sampras at the tail end of his career and Federer at the beginning. It's fun to imagine how they would have matched up, each in their prime.
The Rise Of RF ❤❤
I've watched tennis for more than 30 years, I followed and admired only 2 players, Sampras and Federer. After Federer retired, I've stopped watching tennis, it seems to me that it lost it's value the past 5 years. :(
feeling so sad for thiem, he had such a talent. one of the beautifulst way to play tennis
Funny how as the serve and volleyer, it’s Navratilova hitting heavy topspin;)
