Thank you for posting this video. I watched about half of it and felt I had to comment. I am a language teacher here in New Jersey, USA. I teach Spanish, English, and English as a Second Language. Over the years of my teaching career, my students have been as young as 12 or so (7th grade), up through seniors in high school. I currently am teaching these courses at the college level. I wish I had had the opportunity to work with younger students, around the age of the "excellent English speaker" featured in this video, but regretably, I never did. Having watched this, and a few of your other videos, I must say, "What a wonderful job you are doing!" We as (foreign) language teachers understand that the natural, inborn, Language Aquisition Device within our brains sharply declines right around the age of seven. Kids before that age are just more naturally inclined to accept another language, not as another language, but more like learning more vocabulary. Their learning styles at that age don't really question things the way older students do. May I ask a few questions? Beyond the obvious, why English? I assume this sweet little girl is your daughter. Are you looking at long range goals for her either educationally or professionally? How long have you been working with instructing young kids in English? Have you studied or read literature on the teaching of foreign languages? Are you a teacher by profession? Because if not, you certainly know what you're doing, and that is evident when you were prompting for "negative" present tense sentences. Your use of modeling and prompting for either repetition or for answers is the absolute way to go. Students, anybody for that matter, ideally learn language by, and in this order, listening/speaking/reading/writing. That's how children do it. They babble, then they babble what they hear, and little by little kids learn how to speak, and answer questions (that being a higher level of language manipulation). Being an English as a Second Language instructor here in the U.S., the system is completely backwards. No sooner than a few weeks into the most elementary ESL class, we are (by curriculum) teaching incredibly complex grammatical structures, requiring that our students know the names and definitions of these grammatical structures, AND get this: that we don't even teach to our American students in regular English classes!!! All of this does NOTHING to make our ESL students the least bit competent as speakers of English. I happen to be a "grammar-nerd" or grammar geek. I LOVE grammar. I love everything about the mechanics of language, but that does nothing to make anyone proficient in communicating in any language. Bravo to you for what you're doing, and please, if you will, please tell the sweet little girl in this video that she has a long distance fan from the USA who admires how she is learning to speak English. I'd love to hear back from you. Thank you so much.
