A whisky journey, everyone has a tale
I used to dismiss Caol Ila because it was such a massive distillery, surely making so much whisky means its bad quality! Now its one of my favorite distilleries, absolutely delicous stuff they make, especially when you get Independent Bottlings, a real value winner. nice video, although the contrast on your camera seems to be set a bit high. I've only ever had Caol Ila's distillate from Original Bottlings twice.
Thanks for your feedback - will try and look at the contrast. I found the 12 year really nice - with that kick of smoke it really is nice. I used to agree with the 'making so much means bad quality' but over time it certainly has changed - but that's what is so interesting about whisky.... there's so much of the stuff.
Thanks for the review, Jay! I've had my eye on the Caol Ila 12 for a while now. I have 14 year IB Caol Ila from Gordon & MacPhail that is absolutely wonderful. I'll have to add this 12 to the shelf for a true comparison.
Not tried any other Caol Ila to be fair so would be interested in comparing them... I found that this was a bit of a smoother version than the Laphroig 10, still nice though.
Nice review, Jay! Arran 10 is one of my favorites. I'll have to keep an eye out for the Burns edition here in Minnesota.
It is a lovely dram that one, can see why it's one of your favorites. The 'Burns edition' isn't that expensive, sure you can find it on Amazon to be fair.
Great, honest review Jay. Try the Benriach 10/12 smoky. The profile is flipped really. Leads with fruit allowing the smoke to linger back.
This sounds interesting to try - i really am trying to get into different tastes. The Bushmills 16yr has some very nice tastes and smells.
Wife and I are hosting a little family Burns Night. Planning some cocktails for those that don't want their Scotch neat.
Sounds pretty good - how did it go? Good haggis?
That does look very pale, but very fresh too. Almost straw like.
It does - pretty nice though
Nice review.
I just finshed a bottle of this a few weeks back. I was very impressed with it, and will be getting another one. To be it was up there with the Bunnahabain 12.
Thanks for the comment - i've not tried that Bunnahabain 12 yet so looking forward to it. If i',m honest i think the Arbelour 14 could be one of my favourites so far.
Thanks for that review! You certainly make a good case for giving this one a go 🙂 I''ve been holding out to try the A'bunadh as my first Aberlour. Thoughts on a comparison of the two?
It really is one of my favourites so far and it';s on sale at the moment (i'm not trying to sell this by the way). I've not yet tried that one but if this 14 is anything to go by i'll certainly look out for it. Thanks for the comment.
Nice video! When I reflect over the last year of my journey there were plenty of outstanding whiskies such as the Kilchoman Cognac, Bush12 etc. The whisky for me that stood out however, was the Ledaig Rioja Cask. For a young whisky to achieve that much flavour, great ABV and a £40 price point is impressive. A combination I will be looking out for again.
Well said! I couldn't agree more. Onwards and upwards for 2025.
Depends on your tastes which whiskey is right for you. Internet influencers talk about their tastes, not yours.
Your opinion on whisky is what matters... People like me who just enjoy doing this as a hobby can only offer their thoughts. I love how whisky can taste and smell different to different people. Thanks for your comment.
I enjoyed the review! Certainly gives me some whisky to keep on the radar! Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas. Thanks for your comment and hope you had a great time. Enjoy your whisky journey.
Great top three. The Kilchoman is gorgeous. The Bush16 was a luxury buy for me but this vid just may, maybe, perhaps get me to open it. Nice video. Nice selection. Roll on 2025. Merry Christmas.
You should definately open that Bushmills 16 it really is a gorgeous one. Each to their own but it is crazy the initial smell and taste. Enjoy and thanks for watching.
Great video and food, or rather, drink for thought. Nice idea about sticking it in the gravy! What I like most is that the whiskies you display range from £22-30ish, and other than Ledaig (though still easy through Amazon etc) are widely available in supermarkets.
Thanks for the tips!
Ardmore is definitely a beautiful earthy peat introduction. No iodine hit, not heavy on the alcohol, and easy to drink. One of my defenders in fact!
Nice room you’ve got!
Great meeting you two at the Manchester Whisky Festival yesterday mate
Great to meet you guys too. Think, more than likely, be off to the West Midlands whisky event next year. Think it's around October if i'm honest. Take care.
Nice vid. That Kilchoman is delicious and I think I’m with you on saving your dads and the closed distillery bottle…but I would sip the Kilchoman….prehaps!😂
I once visited a Distillery and they recommeded crushed ice with whisky, have you tried that Jay?
I haven't but I will certainly try - thanks
The difference in the colours is nuts!
