Ian’s Rambles
Добавлен 23 ноя 2023
The Isle of Wight is my home and I’ve recently retired so I thought why not take this extra time to explore this beautiful Island and take you along with me.
As I started enjoying the ‘journey’, my wanderings may take us further afield so let’s see what this almost 60 year old can cope with!
So please follow along as I ramble around (physically and verbally!) and muse about whatever comes to mind....
Ramble

Walking the Red Squirrel Trail | Isle of Wight Cycle Track
Просмотров 2303 месяца назад
This week I’m walking a section of the Red Squirrel Trail (AKA The Cycle Path) from Newport to Sandown and back. The trail follows the old railway line that used to run throughout the Island to the other and the River Medina runs alongside a lot of it. Not gonna lie, this one took a lot out of me and you’ll probably notice my drop in enthusiasm towards the end of the video and my feet were a me...

Freezing Winter Walk on the Isle of Wight.
Просмотров 4406 месяцев назад
Join me on this bitter cold walk from the Isle of Wight’s capital Newport to Cowes across the floating bridge and then from East Cowes to Wootton Bridge. Apologies if some of the commentary seems a struggle, it was a cold day at around 0 deg Celsius and my jaw was slowly freezing 😬!

Isle of Wight Rambling - Tennyson Trail Part 2
Which site did you camp at near Steyning? 😊
Hi, we found a great little site, but it is a trek off the SDW, its called The White House campsite…… here’s the link…visitsteyning.co.uk/listing/white-house-caravan-site/
Jim was a fantastic person - I didn’t see him enough due to me living overseas, but greatly enjoyed every time I got to be in the same room as him. One of the Best.
Can do it but it's a pain. You have to pick the start or end eg:-Milford-On-Sea - zoom out - adjust the min route length and it should come up. Alternatively import GPX file if you have the paid version.I personally use AllTrails. Great vid BTW.
Thanks Stan, maybe I’ll look at Alltrails……or look at Komoot again…. 👍🏻👍🏻. Happy trails!!!
Maybe consider a quilt, much more freedom, they ain't cheap tho. IOW, are there any cross island routes you know about, many thx.
Hi Steve, been thinking about a quilt, expensive! IOW routes: Tennyson trail, Worsley Trail and of course there’s the Coastal Path….. which would be better in Summer.
We've been eagerly awaiting your next ramble! Thanks, we love your style.
It’s been a busy few weeks, thanks for the kind comments 🙏🙏.
Awesome! A new Ramble to enjoy - what could be better?!! Thanks for the shoutout ❤👍🏾😁
Hope you enjoy the views and no problem re the shout out! My pleasure 😀
Interesting walk of the Isle of Wight
Absolutely isn’t it! Many thanks 🙏.
Congrats - I completed it beginning of May in eight days, never again lol. They don't tell you it get's harder as you go along either. I had foggy weather on the 7 sisters and couldn't even see the edge of the cliff which was an anticlimax after trekking them serious miles.
Hi Stan633, it was a great experience wasn’t it! I thought the same about the cliffs. And it got quite busy compared to the previous week or so….. what’s your next hike?
@@Ian_IOW Yes, absolutely stunning. My 1st multi-day hike too, I'm getting withdrawal symptoms already. I only came across one other trail walker and that was at Truleigh Hill YH, obviously busy with day walkers at the main points.I'm actually pre planning The Ridgeway which I'll probably tackle in Sept. I'd love to do The Jurassic Coast but the elevation chart says no lol
Hello Ian, I'm doing southdowns later this year I also opted for the lanshan2 ,did you seam seal yours ? Great videos by yhe way.x
Hi, many thanks, glad you like them. I didn’t seam seal it….mine came already done. It’s a great tent, so much space inside. Enjoy the SDW. Our next hike will be the Cumbria Way in July.
Point the camera forward more, that'd be great... Wow, Cumbria way, an awesome walk, very hard on your feet in places, very rocky, takes u out of a normal walking rhythm, very dry in places as well, the most disappointing finish sth to north, consider north to sth, others wud disagree. Can't wait, harden ur feet, all best.
Thanks again Steve…..yes I get your point re the direction. But I’m heading further north afterwards so decision made 😄.
Another excellent ramble! Lovely scenery as always- Thanks for gifting us these wonderful views 😎
Thanks Ken….
Love ur no nonsense approach, luv ur sense of humour, maybe a bit of work with your approach to filming but it ain't far off, a wee bit more with information, you've nailed it beyond that, all the best steve😊
Thanks for the tips! Is that the Steve Parkinson ex GKN?
@@Ian_IOW not that I know of
One never knows! Have you seen the later videos?
Nice video mate 💪
Much thanks 👍🏻👍🏻
I’m a video star! (A few moments in your video. Enjoyable. Your SDW finishing hiker Al from Florida ( but I’m from Connecticut). Nice job Dan and Ian!!!!!
Hi Al, you certainly are! Hope you enjoyed your experience. I can’t reveal Dan and I next hike until the next video so please keep watching 👀 😄😄👍🏻👍🏻
Good to see another video - my vicarious country walking addiction is filled !!
Excellent 👍🏻 hope you enjoyed it. Great editing as usual….
Im looking at the oex back pack and have read some poor reviews with the failing .has yours held up ok especially the shoulder strap area ? Cheers
Hi Rufus, I’ve been really pleased with the pack so far. Total pack weight has been around 12kgs and once on has been comfortable. No issues with anything breaking. Hope that helps…👍🏻
@@Ian_IOWthanks very much .think I will pick one up then
The word you're looking ....... PASTORAL??
Many thanks 👍🏻 hope you liked the tour.
really pleased I came across this video and channel, great work Ian
Much appreciated Michael! Thanks for reaching out. Keep watching for Part 2 of the SDW 👍🏻👍🏻
Great camera work(!), very informative - a great presentation of the gear involved in these hikes (except the shoes!!) Nice one!
Glad you enjoyed it! Very good point too…..and apt as you will find out in Part 2 of the hike 😂😂
Thanks Ken…..hopefully it’ll help someone decide what kit will get them on the way….👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Helpful video Ian, well done.👌👌👌
Glad you enjoyed it
I remember Dan from 5 peaks, lol.
Hi! Is this Terry? 😄😄👍🏻
@Ian_IOW Yes, it is pal. I'm not sure why I have such a strange username? Lol
Got ya 👍🏻 yes we’ve just finished the last 40 miles of the SDW!!! Keep an eye out for the video coming soon 😄😄
@@Ian_IOW nice one! Well done 👍
Thanks mate….
good to see you two young fella's on your rambles again, just like old times, well done.
Thankyou!!! Part 2 next week 👍🏻
(Edited by me to read better) “Say Hello Dan” “Hello Dan” 😂 I enjoyed watching your walk and commentary! I especially enjoy seeing how many times you can flirt with Mrs B thru the camera 😍🤭
Hi I think you mean it’s Ian (me) flirting with Mrs B thru the camera 😂😂
Of course it was you! I was just saying hello to Dan! 😂
I hope you get good weather for Part 2!
Fingers crossed 🤞…
Looking forward to Part 2! Thanks for the mention, it was our pleasure ☺️
Part 2 planned in for next week I think…hopefully will have all we need this time 😂😂😂😂.
Excellent views! Intrepid exploration in action!!
Thanks Ken. Part 2 of the adventure begins next Monday. 👍🏻
@@Ian_IOWLooking forward to the continued adventure of “Dan & Yan”!!
Poet Laureate. Enjoy the walk. I will be following you. Beautiful views.😊😊😊
Many thanks Paula.
Enjoyed that one, long time since we were there, nice one
Glad you liked it 😄
Another cracking video Ian, very picturesque walk.
Thanks Mark - Glad you enjoyed it
Your walks invigorate us city-dwellers over here in New York! Another interesting walk with some great views (as usual) - Thanks!!
Thanks Mark, keep watching 😂
Thanks Ken, loving the cityscapes!!! 👍🏻👍🏻
Hallo Ian. Lovely walk over there. A bit muddy and hope you didn't get too tired. Mottistone gardens look beautiful. Very sad about the gardener. Thank you.
The ultimate peace and calm, great route! I reckon you should do a stroll in heels (not hills!) and then we’ll chat about painful feet 😉 Great video as always 😊
Heels!!!! Very good point well made, if someone is prepared to pay enough then I might try that 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Not!
great walk Ian, the area's you find are really good. 16 miles??? 20 lbs pack ??? not so sure. guess I would be making it a little shorter and lighter. good luck to you though.
Many thanks
Very nice walk that one Ian, keep up the good work and hope your feet are ok.
Ok now Mark thanks, 😬
Not going to chuckle at you, we all walkers have been there at least once. Look after your feet and perhaps get your self a pair of walking poles. They help a lot when think you don’t need them.
Good advice, thanks! And try to reduce the pack weight I think!! 😂😂
I always look forward to the next Ramble with Ian, but I didn’t expect to see myself in there, too! Thanks for tuning into my livestream while you were so busy torturing yourself! I enjoyed seeing more of the Island😁
It was good to see you on your ramble on my ramble Ken 🤣🤣.
Nice views Thank you for the peaceful scenery
Thank you too
walk on a cold day Thank you for the wonderful view
Thank you too
Thank you for providing such a wonderful view
Thanks for visiting
I remember walking from Blackgang before the new road had to be done. I went up onto St Catherine’s Down to the lighthouse and along the top to Hoy Monument then down to the village of Chale Green. Most of the Downs walk was done in very low clouds very spooky at times.
Hi, yes when that low cloud rolls in it can be very atmospheric!
Great footage as always. That GoPro is doing you so proud. ❤
The combination of great footage and great editing is doing you BOTH proud
It really is!
Enjoying seeing the Island from your perspective. Excellent scenery and narrative work, as always!👍🏾👍🏾😁
Thanks Ken, your livestream gave me a boost on my walk, very entertaining! 👍🏻👍🏻
@@Ian_IOWwhen you showed up in the viewer list, that gave me a boost too!! Appreciate the support as I try out these ‘other’ RUclips features😁
What a beautiful...... I mean delightful video Ian stunning part of the Island, shame we are losing a lot of it.😕😕
Thanks Mark, trying to broaden my vocabulary! Unsuccessfully! 😂😂
Great to see the island from a locals eye. Thanks Ian for exploring the places that we need to visit even as an islander myself it reminds me of how many lovely places there are to wander upon.
Thanks Nikki, yes we are lucky. Group ramble in the summer? 👍🏻
great views on there Ian, places I have never seen , don't think I could make it now though. nice to sit here and watch, cheers
Many thanks. Places I have never seen either!!! Keep watching 👀 👍🏻👍🏻
Another interesting walk along the part of the island I know best, having stayed at Woodside Bay a few times and loved it. Looking forward to more of your walks Ian, hopefully revealing some more of the hidden gems that the island has to offer!
Glad you enjoyed it, more to come soon 👍🏻👍🏻
Nice video Ian , look forward to seeing more.
Thanks Mark, keep an eye out for for future videos 👍🏻👍🏻
A real view of our lovely island by an actual island resident. X
Thanks Nik, more to come soon 👍🏻👍🏻
What’s the prize if I’m already subscribed??!!! Loving the wonderful (and, occasionally familiar views)!
Thanks Ken, your prize will be a pub walk when you visit this year….I already have the route in mind 👍🏻👍🏻
Are those shadows I see on the video? sun on the island then. great shots keep them coming.
The sun blessed us 👍🏻👍🏻
At about 2.35 into your video was the now small beach we used to spend our time on many, many years ago. We always stayed in a cottage up the private road/ footpath. Happy memories.
Hi 👋🏻, just looked back myself. It is a lovely spot…… and a great choice as it’s not well known. Please keep watching for future walks as soon as the rain stops 😄😄
just come across you video Ian nice one me and the wife are going back to the isle off white in april.
Hi Andrew, I hope you enjoy your stay and enjoy the beautiful scenery 👍🏻👍🏻 please subscribe for future walks.
When you walk to Ryde?
In the next week or so I’ll be walking from Wootton Bridge to Seaview which will pass through Ryde…..keep watching 👍🏻……
