Doing some snooping around RUclips, there was no perfect Stereo instrumental of this song. There was however one in Stereo that contained extra music that was evidently more than needed when the song was actually recorded. I used that to edit it into a perfect mix of the song we all know. Why did I do this? Because this song is awesome. I had this synced with the music video, but no... RUclips ...

I heard Skunk Baxter talk about Jim Hodder singing this song. That he had a phenomenal voice. He was right.
I like this tune, even though I know Fagen and Becker did not. Obviously has the feel of their "Can't Buy a Thrill" period. Glad it's still available.

This song would have fit nicely on Can't Buy A Thrill or Countdown to Ecstasy. Too bad the Dan didn't like it enough to use as an album track.

This is listed as an official single on Wiki. Is that an error, or was it really a Steely Dan single? I thought it was just a demo. It sounds like a demo for their debut album.

@@GAoctavio Really? Well, if he said it, I believe it. Fagen & Becker have disowned it 😄It does seem far weaker than anything on CBAT. I read that no one's sure if it was ever officially released as a single but, that if it was, it was extremely limited and axed almost immediately. That's all I could find on it. The original sound quality makes it sound like a demo. That's why I wondered if it was an official single. Thanks for the input.

Although what The Dan became was genius this song with Hodder on vocals is a masterpiece. And god rest his soul. Drowning in a pool is a meaningless way to go for a such a talent.

Over the years my absolute favourite band has changed from time to time. CSNY, Chicago, Beatles and others. But the deeper I explore SD music they are now my all time fave. Wish Fagen would put an album together of the tracks that haven't made the cut. That would be something for us SD tragics.

Many years ago, I tried to search for Ringo's old Sun Country Cooler ads on You Tube, and they had all been pulled. I somehow don't think Ringo's estate want any reminders of the days before Ringo had to get clean and sober.

The jacket in the image is an LP edited by Japan that was released in 1978. With this LP, Steely Dan's phantom debut song was introduced for the first time in Japan. Anyway, when will this song and Dallas be digitized? Also, are stereo masters not made for these two songs?
This song feels it should be part of a montage in a cult film that we still talk about today. Definitely a different Steely Dan tune, but one that I'll never forget.
I know Fagen and Becker were perfectionists and were particular about their sound, but it's a shame they hate this so much. It's like they were rendered blind of their full talent by their own vision.
Musically it fits the feel of Can't Buy A Thrill. But Steely Dan would get more clever, and creepy, lyrically.
