How Phish Influenced my Song writing
Просмотров 1642 месяца назад
In July 2024 I started writing a new song BOYZ WKND. it started with a simple melody sung into a voice memo and then became piano chords with lyrics. Three months later after starting a journey discovering Phish by fate, it turns out that my reaction video to YEM "You enjoy myself" ended up influencing my songwriting by incorporating a vocal a capella section in the bridge of my song

Wow you do not like Phish. Not sure why either of us are watching this...
I can't believe you kept going with Phish reactions after this. Seems pretty clear that what they do is not for you if your reaction to a Phish jam is, "can I skip this? When will this be over?" Fans forgive the shaky vocals because we are there for the jams--which you are desperate to end, here. Love you projecting your boredom onto everyone else in the room, though. LOL. I'll keep going and see if anything changes for you in the next ones, but if a friend reacted to their first Phish exposure like you did here, I'd tell them, "This band isn't for you, and that's cool. People who click with it love it, and people who don't kinda hate it."
It was a strange first choice… I liked divided sky much better! I actually enjoyed it. I plan to do a live broadcast of reaction videos soon of Phish and there will be communal chat
Very good Erica!
Thank you!! Sorry for the video lag! It was my first live stream
You got bored during the best part 😮
I’m sure it wouldn’t be boring at the concert… RUclips isn’t the same
The solo at the 11:00 minute mark is actually a Hammond B-3 Organ. Quintessential part of Page McConnell’s rig. He also plays a Yamaha Grand piano, Fender Rhodes, a Clavinet, a Wurlitzer, a Moog, and some other synths.
That’s a very sweet keyboard section setup
Hermosa❤
It's not a guitar solo, it's a jam. It helps to be open and not stuck in critical mode, impatiently filling every moment with your own commentary. You're literally talking over the music instead of listening, which makes this really more of you reacting to your own mind.
You have valid points and I’m open to listening again without commentary but….. this is a reaction video. From Wikipedia: A reaction video, or a react video,[1] is a video in which one or more persons react to something. Videos showing the emotional reactions, criticism or commentary of people viewing movies, television series episodes, film trailers, music videos, news, or other media are numerous and popular on online video hosting services such as RUclips and live-streaming services such as Twitch.
Your child coming into the room scared the living daylights out of me. Set your levels better so we don't think there are intruders in our own homes while we're listening!
I’m glad you were concerned for my safety - this was my first video so I’ve upgraded equipment since then
Mull is a good Mike song.
This was the first song I heard of phish ever so it was an interesting introduction to the band and not necessarily representative of their “typical” sound
you may need to re-calibrate your cringe meter, not reading as high as it should be - LOL
Yeah I tried to find one over 9000 but extreme is the most I could muster
Please make more of these. I’d like to learn Guelah Papyrus next
Is that a dance ?
lol
Phish fans have been DMing me ideas for part 2 and part 3
Regarding your comment about making the dance a TikTok. Trey made a joke at a show in Chula Vista in 1999 when they were playing this that they wanted to make the Meatstick dance the next Macarena craze.
It could have been the next Macarena ❤
@@EricaWaxer If only social media had been around then :-)
Never played Megaman, but gotta respect playing a Classic, goodluck with your run! Is it possible to play this 2 player though?
It’s 1 player but fun to play with a friend watching
You may listen part of the time but you hear nothing.
That’s a very wise thing to say
That sequence at 5:00 is guitar with effects. There are great live versions of their webcasts you can get killer video and lights with the music. Check out the 41 minute Tweezer from St. Louis this past summer.
41 minutes ??? Omg 😅
Being "out of tune" is a unique aspect of jam music. The imperfection is the kitsch.
That’s so interesting.
@@EricaWaxer Watching your review and seeing that you're coming from a trained singer, I believe that is an interesting concept to you. Ninety percent of their songs are orchestra and the other ten a fun abode to the vocalization requirements of modern music.
@@edwardssistershandsI know a lot about orchestral and symphonic music… I guess I didn’t expect a “rock” band to be following in that school… makes sense
Music needs to be louder.
I’ll try on the next video. At least RUclips didn’t block this one.
Who THE HELL is giving you all these terrible Phish recommendations???? There’s so many places to start and the stuff you’ve heard ain’t it.
They are the ones willing to send me money $$$$ 😅 to promote their favorite terrible songs obviously lol
@@EricaWaxer ok damn, a fool and their money! Do you want video every time or is audio ok?!
catapult is frequently played with simple; generally, it will have a third song added(sometimes more)... and all three songs are kinda woven together into a single piece .. i think the best example of this, was played on 6/22/94 and is known as the 'midnight rider simple'... this version also falls inside the mikes song>i am hydrogen>weekapaugh groove, trio.. making it a mike's>simple>midnight rider>catapult>simple>mike's>hydrogen>weekapaugh medley... i HIGHLY recommend listening to this version (start at Mike's go through Weekapaugh).... it will 1) allow you to see how phish varies songs every performance AND 2) hear the Phishiest that Phish ever Phished.... this second set might be the best live performance (by anyone) i have ever seen... check the reviews on phish.net to get a sense how insanely energetic it was
Gee a woman trying to not listen to phish. How unique lol.
Hi Erica - you got a full watch out of me, hope the algorithm doesn't crush you again, maybe you could to try reacting to non official videos. Next video please mix the music louder, I listen to your vids for the chomping but gotta hear the music better, thanks! Sorry, my retired bank account is pretty stingy, I'm not going to Mexico either, nor Albany which is not far down the road. Happy Trails 🙃
Great suggestion! This music seems safe! But I never know until I upload my finalized product which is scary because then I have to go back and blur the music out more.
As another commenter already said, the “gibberish” is Japanese from when they performed in Japan and learned the lyrics in Japanese. At around 25:00 the “synth” part is Trey’s ring modulator from his Line 6 M5. He loves playing with that sound.
Thanks for the info! I’ll keep an ear out for the modulator in future performances
It’s a modified Hammond B3 organ. Dual Leslie cabinet. It can make all of those noises. It’s not a guitar you hear there at the 11 minute mark. 😂
That’s super cool
The “gibberish” part in Meatstick was Japanese lyrics. They toured Japan in 2000 and added the little part while doing a show there, and it kinda stuck I guess. Trey in 1999 joked multiple times before playing the song that the dance would be bigger than the Macarena, and they’d teach the audience the “dance”. In hopes of getting the Guinness Record for most people doing a dance. All for the lols of course
Thank you for the clarification! That’s helpful context.
Beautiful song.
who chose this song? Not a great Phish song.
complaining about length again? They did a cover of the ziggy stardust album. Trey practiced singing for that one, so maybe interesting to see.
This one was almost too short! I just had to finish before work
I would watch you make faces for 20 minutes! :)
😅
The 2nd part, where Trey starts to sing after the jam is another song called Shafty.
Are they usually played together? or was this a rare occurance?
@@EricaWaxerIt was the 1st and only time they’ve been played together, but I’m not sure if I’d call it rare. Phish is always mixing up their set lists from show to show, and never play things in the same order twice.
Talk way too much.
Thank you Cesar! If I was as good looking as you I wouldn't have to talk as much. 😜
@@EricaWaxer No one's perfect. I won't hold it against you ;)
Chomper
Who’s giving you these whack recommendations! lol. So much better phish to explore.
Trey is going to be at the Forum in LA next Thursday, 10/17, for Life is a Carnival, it’s not Phish, or even Trey related, it’s a celebration of Robbie Robertson, co-founder of The Band. Anyway it’s gonna be pretty awesome, I’m sure, and Trey’ll be in LA! Just saying 😂❤
I can't wait! Got pretty good seats.
We can not hear the music in these. Just FYI.
Read my description . I explain why
Kinda pointless to watch a reaction to a song I can't hear.@@EricaWaxer

Please try a Run Like an Antelope or Split Open & Melt from 1992-95. I wouldn't consider Carini a song for a noob to hear.
More Phish! Love it. Talk all you want ;) 'Stash' off a live one is a solid (audio only)
I went to the Clifford Ball. It was in upstate NY in 1996. So, this isn't from that festival. Still a good version from 1994, just thought I'd clarify for you.
there is no improvisation and no solos. It is a composed piece of music that is played as whole. Same every time and all meant to be one thing.
What you thought was a guitar or synth was a Hammond B3 organ. It's a pretty distinctive sound that you should know.
I’ll listen to an example of it. I’m not an expert on synthesized instruments.
Another thing regarding the pause is, as you noted, Trey plays the melodic phrase several times to define it then pauses before the last note is played leaving tension from an unresolved phrase. Trey has said that he'll let it steep for a bit until the crowd settles before he delivers the last note then repeats and expounds upon it. Too bad about the missing ~5min, that's a pretty big ouch. I enjoyed listening to your commentary as it highlights aspects of the show that I don't/didn't pick up on. I listen to the music much closer, the turns of phrase and how the band reacts to each other. I'll be looking forward to more from you, look for bands/music where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
Great observations. As you were speculating, the instrumental section here is more of an open jam than a “guitar solo” section. They are just listening to one another and following along with each other’s ideas. For a lot of phish fans, this format is where the band finds their most magical moments. It did take me a lot of listening to them before I developed the patience to listen along, but if you stay locked in, it can be so rewarding and that’s why a lot of fans go back over and over. You’re right to observe that sometimes it takes them time to find a good idea, and the result can sometimes sound meandering and boring though haha. I like the mull jam, but many would say the song is not a good representation of the band overall. For a recommendation, I think 12/30/15 bathtub gin is a great example of a jam of theirs that (at least to my ears) flows nicely through ideas and has a big payoff. There’s some good fan-shot video of that jam on youtube that does a good job to capture the energy in the audience.
My take on the long pause in the middle is that it is inspired by John Cage’s 4'33", who the band would definitely be aware of.
I don’t know.. there’s always been pauses between orchestral movements . John cage didn’t invent silence… though 4’33” was crazy when it premiered
The text to speech interpreted Trey's notes during the solo as "I love you" and "oh baby"
Love to support phish reactions, couldn't get through all the chomping.
"Luke Skywalker." This would be a common response Phish would have for people who used to interview them and try and figure out lyrics or the meaning behind their songs. Phish always did a good job of keeping the meaning to things within the band. Someone below mentioned there is a backstory to the lyrics, but I would be hard-pressed that any member of the band would actually give that up since it's been one of the biggest mysteries they have kept private. If there was an interview, I can assure you that the story they gave was entirely made up. It's this kind of playfulness which made Phish so popular. You either love them or you hate them, there is no middle ground. I do appreciate you taking the time to analyze them since much of their music is very freeform and complex.
The lighting guy is named Chris Kuroda and he’s been with the band since the earliest days. He has pre programmed parts for chunks of the songs but also has the ability to improvise. He’s the unofficial 5th member playing along. Not everyone is high but many are.
“He’s a little flat.” LOL🤣😂🤣 You’ve just described every Mike vocal. But he does have some good ones like Scent of a Mule and Possum. Trey is a better singer and frontman. Mike has his moments most every show. You sure did pick a doozy to start with. At least it can only get better from here!
I'm proud to have attended UVM just 4 years after the band formed, 1987. I lived for 2 years in the same dorm complex where Mike and Trey lived, WDW. I wasn't into them yet, but they were still playing the dorms and house parties. I heard them when walking by Nectar's. I got into them hard in 1990 after roommates sat me down with tapes and a joint. My first song was Contact. My first show was Barre VT 1991. I met them all on one occasion or another and had a few backstage experiences at Deer Creek in 2003. After one show, Mike and I drove around the lot in a golf cart. Even got stuck in the mud. I jumped out to get us out, and a random fan started laughing at my muddy feet, until he looked up and saw Mike. We were out there so long that he called the bus driver to let him go to the hotel (with Fishman). I drove Mike to his hotel in my car. The hotel was something else. Fishman was playing chess with someone when we got there. My last show was Vegas 'Ween 2014.
the only lyrics are "divided sky the wind blows high" repeated twice just after the song starts
