Backpacking the John Muir Trail Solo | Day 9: Walking Away
Просмотров 321Месяц назад
On day 9 of my JMT solo hike I decided it was time to walk away from the trail. This was such a tough choice. I was missing my family, my feet were killing me, and I didn’t have the joy I had when I started. I realized I had become more focused on the destination instead of the journey. Leaving the trail might have been the best choice for me. I met the greatest people at Florence Lake and they...
Backpacking the John Muir Trail Solo | Day 8: Ups & downs

On day eight of my solo hike on the John Muir Trail I finally linked up with some hiking partners. We went over Bear Ridge, ate lunch, saw some amazing lakes and I was totally lonely. This is the opposite of what I thought would happen. I already posted this video but as I looking at my footage from Day 9 I found out that I had done a trail update so I reposting this video. Here are the items t...

Facts 💯 I also have a similar maintenance routine that I do right away when coming home. It’s also a quick review of how each piece of gear was doing out there. Thanks for the vid!
Thank you! I think it's so important to clean your gear and have a look over it before the next trip. A little time and effort makes it last longer
good information here that is helping me decide for my PCT hike next year. People say here and on other videos that you could fit more in if you unpacked and zip locked, but why show someone the max when, for me, it’s more useful to see what fits in straight from the store. Anything extra is a bonus.
I did a section of the the JMT this summer and brought the BV500 with me. I appreciate your comment on keeping the food in the bags. I think this gives a good baseline and then you can pack from there. If you're doing the PCT you will learn how to use every nook and cranny of the BV! I got 7 days of food in there once and it was packed full.
I've had my handle broken off the same exact way as yours for the last 3 or 4 years. I was cleaning out the freezer and somehow came across your video. Luckily, I saved the handle because this is the perfect fix. My wife asked me years ago why I keep the handle, and now I can show her why. Just in time for the holidays. Thanks for the easy fix.
Thank you for sharing this me! I'm not a professional RUclipsr and love hearing when my comments help others. I was looking at getting a new door and it was around $400! Way better fix for $10
I just sent in a 2 inch deck screw. heated the head of screw with torch for counter sink way faster than you
Did it come out the other side?
well heck I've thrown away quite a few pair of Darn Tough socks, and stopped buying them because they seem to only last about a year, I will start returning them now !
When I first read about it I was so surprised and didn’t think they would really do it but they do. My other pairs have lasted about 3 years and still going strong
Great comparison
Thank you! It always makes me happy when people like my videos and they are helpful
"its really not" Holy fruity
Adding to my previous review. I noticed you placed the fuel canister into the pot as I have always done, UNTIL ! now, I saw a hack on another channel, the canister does indeed scrape the pot so from now on simply wrap the canister. Buen Camino
That’s a great hack! I ended up cutting an old shirt and making a small piece of cloth to place on the bottom. I’m going to try this too
If I can't trust a pastor I'm done😂😂, just ordered the entire setup mostly because I was backpacking last week with 2 mates who were both using them. Buen Camino.
Love this comment so much! I used this over the summer and am so happy I went with it. The GreenPeak stove was great to have the piezo on it. Glad you were able to get one and hope you like it as much as I do.
Thanks for this! I was thinking to use gorilla glue, because it’s what I have on hand. I wonder if it would hold just as good. 🤔
Hi Samone! I think I would try it since you have it on hand. I wish Samsung made it so you can replace the handle but you have to replace the entire door for close to $400!
I used Gorilla glue and it didn’t hold. Might be user error, but I don’t think so…
@@staceyduncan-jackson7917 Hi Stacey, I didn't use gorilla glue for mine. Maybe you can try again? Did you clean the surface of the area first to remove any dirt build up? That might help...
Mine did the same thing. I tried finding a replacement part. Samsung said “unfortunately that part is not sold separately.” And sent a link to order what I needed. Turns out, to repair it, you need to replace the entire door front. $361.00. I followed this video, paid $15 for a two part JB Weld epoxy kit, and fixed it myself. THANK YOU for posting this video.
Hey Steve! So glad this fix worked for you. I had the same thing. I was shocked that it was going to be almost $400 to fix it. Seems like such a miss on Samsung's part
Hey are the bear boxes only intended for that particular site? We are planning to hike from 4 mile Trail to LYV should be ~12 miles. Around what time did you get there? Did the site ever completely fill up, worried if we arrive later afternoon and there not being space? Also Just to confirm all you need to stay there is a wilderness permit correct?
The Bear Boxes are for that whole area. I would use the word "site" loosely in this area. There are a handful of bear boxes that you can use at some of the different sites. What time of year are going to be there? I've been in most of the summer months and have always found a great spot. There is a lots of room at LYV. I think you'll be fine. You do need a wilderness permit to stay there. Hope that helps. Happy to answer any other questions
“In the back country” and conveniently has their truck nearby
Maybe fourbying would have been a better word.
I think this guy is in the back country
Maybe fourbying would have been a better word.
I bought this pack when it first came out. Really liked it. I wanted to mod it out. Made a roll top. Sewed on a large mesh pocket. Cut off the padded hip supports. Eliminated about 10 ounces. Not game changing by any means, but way more functional for me. It’s funny to look at the latest model and see that what I made 10 years ago is now available on the shelf.
Hey Christian, you were ahead of the game! It's amazing to see how packs are constantly changing, evolving , and getting lighter. I had the Flash 65L and really liked it but I think it was twice the weight of this pack.
Neal - this is Nathan, one of the three recent college grads you met on day one (we had dinner @ Lake Virginia!). Glad I was able to find you on RUclips after some digging! Sounds like a tough decision but the right one. Love the content!
Hey Nathan, so glad you found me! I've thought about you guys and saw your picture on top of Mt. Whitney. When I got home I was telling my wife how much I enjoyed our dinner that night. Would love to connect more either on her on send you a DM on Instagram to hear more about your trip!
That sandwich looks yummy! What's the recipe? I still have my green dual burner Coleman stove that is bulletproof. That single burner stove is quite a piece of engineering but I doubt I'll ever get one. I wouldn't recommend cutting the bell pepper with your fingers exposed using a sharp knife, though. But you're the pro (if that was you doing the cutting)💪 Great video! Thank you!🙏
Hey Warren! That sandwich was so good. I think that food tends to taste better in the backcountry. I still have a my Green Coleman but haven't used it all summer since I got the FireMaple set up. Ya, that wasn't me cutting the bell peppers. That way. he was brave.
The coupon is not working for the Europe website 😢
Hi Carina, I’m sorry to hear that. Can I get you a different link here or did you already purchase them?
Tight! This place is amazing!
Thanks Matthew! This place really is amazing. It's beautiful and peaceful
It not a real vs if ur not using the fireplace fixstar which is their jet boil competition
I can see the thought process on this. I don't have the Fire Maple system that is like a Jetboil. This set up is 1/3 of the price of my JetBoil Flash.
Thanks for the information very informative and educational. ❤
Hey Joel! Really glad you liked it. This is such a great knife!
So glad i found this, had repair people out today and confirmed the Pump, told me it would be over 450 to fix! Nope just ordered part and ill do it myself. Last year we did the heating element on dryer to!
Hi Alyson! Comments like this make me so happy. you can easily replace this on your own! If you need any encouragement I'm here for you 😁
I don't give a crap if the socks have a warranty. All I want to know is how high quality they are, and what I can expect from them -
Hey Scott! I can easy say they are the best socks I’ve ever worn

Thank you!!!!
I ordered 3 Combo Green Peak Stove/Petrel Pot Combos from Fire Maple for me & the family. I got 12% off and free shipping. With tax it was $120 total for 3 kits. Great deal…less than the price of 1 Jetboil. 😎 I watched your video after I had ordered, so I could’ve saved a few more bucks with your code. Thanks for the comparison and review!
That might be one of the best comparisons I've heard; three for the price of one! The combo you and I both got is my new favorite. I didn't bring my Jetboil out at all this year! Keep the code in mind; it works for any order from Fire Maple you might want to make in the future! Thanks for watching
@@NealBenson Awesome! That’s great to know…thanks for the discount code, I appreciate it!!
@@HighlanderMikeGolf You're welcome Mike! I thought it was super generous of Fire Maple to share it!
is it hard to open it up and replace the inside did you look into this? mine just broke I have the same fridge
I looked up ideas on how to do that but couldn’t find any. All I found was that you can buy a new freezer door and replace it. Seems like a horrible decision on Samsung
@@NealBenson ya what a bad design . The price of door is approximately $400 Canadian . I be using your idea 😉
@@MohammedAli-bk7khit was $350 USD! It’s wild
Do you think this would work as an outer shell in the winter over a down mid layer?
I do! I think this would be a great use for it! I'm super impressed at how dry it kept me.
Great video, thanks for taking us all along with you!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. I'm really glad I did some filming so I can look back on this
Love that cook pot
Thank you for introducing me to it! Sold my Jetboil stash after buying this

Thank you! This was such a fun day on the trail
It's the journey not the destination
Such a great reminder! The journey was epic
I came here to listen to your story, see the scenery, and most importantly, to see the performance of the Rei Coop Flash Air 50 Backpack. I notice the bag looks a bit bulky. Did you fill it to its maximum capacity?
I think the Flash Air preformed excellent! I had no issues with the pack on trail. I did have it filled to the max. I think REI recommends the pack for loads of 25 pounds or less. I had this pack around 32 pounds my entire trip and had no issues. I was even able to fit my BV500 in the pack. Hope that helps. Happy to answer any questions on the pack. I’m Impressed
I'm in the final stages of making a decision to buy this bag. I've considered many things from several of your other videos. The price here also makes sense because there's a significant discount. The final consideration is the durability of the material. I live in Indonesia where the mountains are covered with dense vegetation. I'm worried that this material might be at risk of tearing when it comes into contact with branches. Please help me with your perspective on this.
@@hi.kingharry I really like this pack. I think the padding on the back is better than other packs in this weight class and price point. The material was great. I was in the forest and hit a couple trees with no punctures or issues at all. Also, REI has a great policy. For example if you buy this pack and then get a hole in it on your backpacking trip you can return it to REI within a year. If you're not completely sold on this pack, check out the Shadowlight from Outdoor Vitals. I have that pack too and it's been my favorite pack for a couple years. alnk.to/5Fbf1Ex Shadowlight is also $100 less!
Trail thoughts… being out there gives a moment to reflect. Thank you for sharing. 🏕️
I really liked this format of talking while hiking best! I’m so glad I filmed this trip and had all these thoughts to look back on. It makes me want to get out there again
Great video Neal thanks
Thank you Kevin! I'm always glad when my videos are helpful.
what do you think about the material. is it strong enough to be used on tropical forrest?
I'm super impressed at how durable it is! I took it on 130 miles of the JMT this summer and it was really the ideal pack for the job. You can hear some of my thoughts here-- ruclips.net/video/lF6EsKxeNuQ/видео.htmlsi=JfX7EZb1GMyCT0jF
A good trick to create more space. One, try and repackage. Most packing is not space efficient, in particular rehydrated meals. You can dump the contents into a smaller freezer, zip lock bag to save space. Also those freezer ziplocks can take boiling water. Did this for 14 straight days on the JMT this summer. Saves a lot of space! You can try that with other like items such as granola or trail mix. Sometimes just poking a hole in the packaging so you can press out the air will be super helpful!
Such a good move! I did the top half of the JMT this summer and was able to repackage some food to save space
Cam the fire maple simmer?
Great question! I haven't used it to simmer but have used it with a low flame. I would think that it is able to do that
✌️
Thanks Marcos! Hope you enjoyed it
NO! Hiking isn't on my bucket list! But I do love nature and it's fun seeing you Neal. All God's best blessings for you is my prayer. Ma Bear, aka Mrs. Kendall
@@ma1bear1 Thank you so much! So good to hear from you. I might be the crazy one who likes to hike 17-20 miles a day and sleep in the woods!

Hey Neal, I just discovered your channel through the JMT 2024 Facebook group. Very informative video-looking forward to watching the rest of your JMT journey. Thanks for sharing!
That's how I found your video too! Really enjoyed your JMT in 2 min video. I need to edit day 7 tonight. Every time I look at the footage it makes me want to go back
@@NealBenson Thanks! I totally get it-editing brings all that trail nostalgia back. Can’t wait to see Day 7!
Going through the same thing right now. Thanks for the advice!
You’re welcome. Samsung appliances are super annoying. There should be a better way to fix this than replacing the entire door
First time viewer here, and new subscriber. God bless my friend. 🤝
Thank you for subscribing! God Bless you too! It was so fun making these daily videos while on the trail
No use buying a bear vault that’s to small. Go a size bigger and just pack other stuff in there if there’s room.
I think the BV500 is the way to go!
@@NealBenson well that’s definitely big! I’m going to try the 450 for a two night hike , I’m sure it will be plenty of room. Of course lots of factors to choose which one is best…how long the trip, how much you eat, what you’re eating, etc. Was thinking about going for the Bearikade but just can’t justify the price.
@@gcruishank9663 The 450 is perfect for a 2 day hike. I've used the 500 on a 7 day hike but it is packed!
@@gcruishank9663 I can't justify the price of the Bearikade either
Outstanding episode man, so nicely explained and executed! Brilliant!

Thank you for sharing! Curious, what was your budget for the trip? Interested also how much cash would be needed or did everything work with electronic payment? Even the ferry?
JMT Expenses Permit- $15 Yosemite entry fee- $35 Gas- $90 Food (on the drive up)- $55 (for me and my driver) Yosemite Backpackers camp- $8 Dinner at Red’s Meadow- $35 Red’s Meadow Campground fee- $8 Total at VVR- $140 I don’t think VVR charged me for all my items Here are some costs I recall from VVR: Ferry- $40 Internet use- $25 Dinner- $25 Shower- $8 Laundry- $10 Breakfast- $25 Dinner- $25 Resupply box pick up- $40 I don’t have a good amount that I spent on all the food I packed.
