To touch on the vocab thing... When i started learning Dutch i was reading a novel and watching a couple TV series. In the novel i kept coming across the word "zoeken". I would look up the meaning and carry on. Every time i came across the word i forgot it and had to look it up, UNTIL, the people in the TV show had lost something and one character said zoeken zoeken and everyone began searching the room for the item. And since then not only do i remember what it means, but I also remember the moment i permanently knew its meaning and never needed to look it up again. Funny how our brain works like that.

I've spoken Louisiana French (with some Louisiana Creole mixed in) with my 4 year old son since he was born-granted I sometimes get lazy and speak to him in English-but we watch kids shows in French, and that has helped a lot. My son's favorites are "TroTro" and "Mimi Soleil." We also watch French dubs of other kids shows. Unfortunately, there is only one cartoon in Louisiana French-called "Boudini et ses amis"-but he does love this show too. These kids shows have even helped me, a fairly fluent speaker, learn new vocabulary!

Found your channel searching for more videos on asymmetric intelligibility, because the topic applies well to Louisiana French vs Louisiana Creole (my 2 heritage languages), and prior to this video, the one by NativLang was the only other one I came across talking about the subject. Today "hipster" has a bit of a judgmental connotation. As in someone who's trying really hard to show how different he/she is. For instance, a hipster would sport a flip-phone in 2024 just to show that they're not buying into the smart phone trend.

This is a very good video. As for example I speak a dialect of English, mainly in spoken where unlike my younger peers from 5-10 years. It's much harsher on R sounds, so instead from what I hear as " Chrip, Jrip. I typically say Trip, Drip with a tapped R, dental consonants using tapped R's, while most other words would use the typical R, but over-rhoticism can occur due to a consequence more closed mouth position, and throw more vowels into the mix. Any word with OO basically has no rhyming scheme, mono-syllabic syllables become nasal and reduced like in "Room" being closer to simply "ɹ̠ʷʊ̈̃: ", often impacting the past participle. Won't and Don't have the nasal sound. So monothong o and standard english o are NOT ALLOPHONES at all. If an RP speaker and me tried to communicate. It would be hard due to more vowels on my side. It's due to having an accent that is natively Appalachian, so T, D are just natively softer and often being closest to Swedish's T, D as they are barely pronounced. It's often irregular with CH. Two speakers of the same accent will say Appalachian with either SH or CH, this often deletes T in SOFTENED, SOFTENS, Capture -> CapSHer. Vowels are just much more prevalent that make a long vs. short distinction to voice certain words that normally would be voiceless. It, often being long ɪ:, but the T -> D or reduced to a soft glotal stop. The tendency to use fricative sounds is more common. /kx/ and /x/ as allophones to /kʰ/, the fricative version of /g/ often becoming /gɣ/ and /ɣ/. An accent that does that often. The tendency of weakening dʒ into ʒ or voicing ʃ into it. Umlaut and Ablaut is pretty prevalent when spoken. My younger co-workers often struggle due to not having the older speech pattern. So vocabulary when formal absolutely is difficult. I do struggle to understand what Western USA says due to mainly lacking the same vowel inventory, less-conservative grammar, creolized heavily when it comes to verb conjugation, ALSO they break plurality for verbs for is -> are. My co-worker is like " It's probably due to the more closed mouth sounds and nasality. The S is just a mess. As in standard it would be /s/, but aspiration turning some words into / ʃ / like Groceries. Also monothong o. So more than half of 70% of words spelt don't sound like they are written. I had to explain hey " Make sure you make the floor pristine! " so formal vocabulary is often a problem. I can't understand AAVE due to mainly the jumbled sounds of not having as many vowel sounds, and when I hear " Do be " they don't realize they are saying the equivalent of a monosyllabic " dooby " when referring to a name. Vowel Length does have some importance due to words often bleed into each other so creakiness and length are more important and number/person are stressed very often.
