C chord use the bass note (root) 'C' , which is the 5th string on 3rd fret. and Am Chord use the bass note 'A' , which is open 5th string - and both chords don't use the 6th string (the thickest one) - if you explore this difference carefully, you will find the way to make them different ! it's natural to make mistake for everyone. I'm happy that you are the one who is willing to ask to solve your own question. That's very important thing to get to know something. Just keep exploring your guitar by your pace :D
