The Balance Between Style and Story in Photography
Are you focused on developing your signature photography style, or are you prioritizing the story behind the image? In this video, I explore the delicate balance between style and storytelling in photography, inspired by a powerful quote from Laia Abril: “If you are using the same ‘signature’ style, you end up putting too much of yourself there, while covering up the subject itself.”
We’ll discuss how iconic photographers like Ansel Adams, Steve McCurry, and Henri Cartier-Bresson approached this balance. Is their work famous because of the subjects they captured-or because of their unmistakable style?
I’ll also share reflections on my own journey as a photographer: how focusing on refining ...

Cameras Don't Write Novels - Who Gear Matters To

This week we're talking about a Peter Adams quote I read recently about how cameras don't write novels. Or something like that. Ultimately, gear does matter, but it should only matter to you, and even then, it's not what takes a great photo. 0:00 There are no chapters. A Photography Project: Part 1
Просмотров 1494 месяца назад
I'm starting a new photography project. This is because I haven't been inspired by Austin, for either street photography or landscape photography. So to mitigate this rut, I'm starting a new project where I go around Austin photographing the multitude of taco trucks. My hope is that this will combine my passion for street photography and my new-found love for landscape photography, and will giv...
Are You A Photographer?

Are You A Photographer? This video asks the question: are you a photographer, or do you just like to take photos? And what is the distinction? And does it even matter? I took a road trip up to Oklahoma to go camping, and routed out a little photo journey for myself along the way. Extending a 5 hour drive into 9 isn't a bad thing if it's for something you love. Getting Aggressive: Street Photography at 16mm

Getting Aggressive: Street Photography at 16mm This video is me quickly reviewing the Fujifilm 16mm f2.8 and doing a little street photography pov, testing out this lens. This lens is definitely wider than I'm used to, and I found myself getting more aggressive to tell better stories, because at such a wide focal length, it's tough to isolate subjects into a good story. But, I think this lens i...

Street Photography at 90mm This video is about the Fujifilm 90mm f2, and how I, personally, am not a fan. Telephoto lenses for street photography are not my personal style, as I prefer to shoot scenes over people. While this lens is a fantastic lens that takes great photos, on the X-Pro2, the AF was a little slow, and again, street portraits are not me forte. But, enjoy the video anyway as I si...

This is perfect in my opinion. I also do EVERUTHING by hand. Cutting, skiving, punching and stitching. You feel so much more attached to your pieces this way. Keep going!! Maybe a backpack next.
When have a lot practice is catching easily like you want. But the real story is an accidental shot, when already knowing what matter for individual creator. So i think, we all getting our best shots when the right place and right time comes together. And when you come for 100 time the same place and still see new, practice becomes experience.
Just got this in recommendation after watching Bruce Gilden's video. Pretty good channel.
That’s surprising to me! Very cool
Hello 👋 I’m 47 and I am a beginner, waiting for my first camera to arrive today. It’s an Olympus om d em5. I have a decent understanding of composition and I would consider myself as hyper observant, probably to the point of it being rooted in some sort of social anxiety disorder. I owned a LUMIX camera 15 years ago when my son was born. I didn’t learn all of the functions and eventually sold it when my iPhone could do what I wanted at the time. Since then, I’ve only used my phone for photographs. Whenever I send my family and friends pictures, I sometimes get complemented that my phone takes such wonderful pictures, but it’s something that I’ve worked at over the years trying to improve my pictures of the good times had with family and friends or on trips. My son is a teenager with autism and I’m hoping we can get into this hobby together, as he likes to walk around our downtown area together, but he would prefer to stay at his computer above all else. I’m hoping that this will motivate him to get out more and raise his awareness to his surroundings. This will also give me the opportunity to start street photography. I just subscribed to your channel after watching a few of your videos 👍
That’s so great to hear that you’re trying to get into photography with your son! I hope it does motivate him to get out more! I’ve heard the Olympus systems are incredible!
Brand new subscriber based on your wonderful intro. And what is with TEXAS and gas station cuisine. Buc-ees and all that? But c'mon. Kombucha at a gas station? How Austin. ;) And hey, a review. I had no idea I was on The Report of the Week. ;) I also left Fujifilm for Sony, partly because I wanted full frame. Partly because I use vintage lenses a lot and Sony makes a great platform. When I started my new channel, @ChrisBroganPhotos , I knew I wouldn't be much of a gear head channel. I'll talk about cameras because it will lure humans in. But you get it quickly. I don't care what you use. (I mean, that said, a Leica Q3 43 would make me sell out. But EXCEPT for that.) Variation on the writing quote I'd heard: No one ever asked Hemingway what typewriter he used. What I loved most about your video was the ending part. I'm going to have to figure out my version of that answer, uh, gator. ;)
Haha Texas gas stations have great cuisine! I don’t know what to say! And it’s convenient. I agree about leaving Fujifilm for full frame. And, for me, higher megapixel count. I just wanted more detail. I need to try out some of my vintage lenses on my Sony. Yeah, it seems like people want gear reviews. But I just don’t care for them. I want to talk about other aspects of photography like photography itself. Crazy idea, I know ha! I’ll have to check out your channel, and let me know what you come up with for your version of an answer!
good work!
Thanks!
The camera/typewriter analogy is sort of on the right track, but it falls short. A novelist writes exactly the same text whether it's done with a typewriter, a word processing application, or a pen and paper. When we later read that text, it probably will have been reformatted, changed to different font, printed, and bound or else transmitted to us in electronic form. Regardless, the text will be exactly the same and or reading experience will likewise be the same. A photographer cannot capture the same image regardless of equipment. Sure, a photographer with a $12 Hawkeye II with expired 126 film or a medium format Hasselblad and Portra400 can take "the same" picture of a model, but the results simply will not be the same. I can use my Sony Mavica with 1.3Mp sensor (yes, it still works) or I can use my R10. The resulting images will not be the same.
4:51 I didn't ask but I know that Stephen King used an IBM Selectric for most of his career (because he puts them in every book he can) and people do buy them for that reason lol
You are right) what you get is what you see, and gear is only an option, when you know the technique. Would be nice to have a friendship, i'm photographer from Russia, Saint Petersburg. Where can i see more of your photos? Sorry for bad English 😊
My Instagram is stephenparvaresh.photography, check me out there and I’d love to see your stuff.
I love my F1x and was planning to buy a smaller F-3X, but the prices have gone up significantly here in Germany.
What weight leathers did you use for this?
try black mist
It's so nice to see someone following their passion, keep it up man!
Thanks, will do!
This short need more views man this is so beautiful
I own (4) of these. Perfect for a DSLR or medium format golm camera.
LV bags are heavily copied, and small cute bags with funny handles are not practical everyday bags, the kislux bag would be much more practical. Thanks again for the informative video.
Love my Domke bags. Versatile, and they last forever.
Hi which zoom lens is on the Sony 7RII :)?
On the camera I had the TTartisan 75mm f2. But the only zoom lens in the video was the Sony G 24-50 f2.8.
I'm always on the search for the perfect bag. This one checks a lot of boxes so I will be checking it out. Thanks for the review!!
Glad I could help!
I've been using Domke bags since the late 1980s, when Jim Domke still owned the company and they made only two sizes. They last forever and are great bags.
LMFAO. "Best. Period". Doesn't even fit half of what I need to carry, doesn't provide anything near decent padding between items, AND you can't sling it on your back. Dumb title.
How thoughtless of him to not consider your personal taste.
@mgscheue thank you for making my point
@@natepotter6911 You have a point?
@@mgscheue already stated it. Perhaps you should learn how to read. DUMB TITLE. NOT THE BEST BAG. Now run along.
Like others have mentioned, I've still got my nearly-30-year old F2. You can't go wrong with the F3 as a solid walking-around bag. I've used a variety of their bags, pouches, wraps and belt systems over the years and can't recommend Domke enough. Great review!
Thanks for sharing your experience with Domke! I'm sure they're going to last a long time.
Great review! I have a couple of questions about the Domke F3 bag. First, doesn't the lack of a zipper or other closure on the main compartment cause any issues, especially in bad weather, like rain or snow? Second, I've read on some forums that the bag's metal clasps are not very durable and might fail over time. Has this been an issue in your experience?
This bag definitely isn’t weather sealed like you see on other high tech bags. But the top flap does close nicely around all four sides. If properly done, I haven’t had this bag leak water in rain. We don’t get snow in Texas though. As far as the metal clasp, it is thin metal but it’s such a simple design, I don’t see how it could fail unless you pulled it hard enough to break it. Maybe over 20 years it might eventually break. But nothing lasts forever. I have no concerns over the metal buckle.
I use a f8 with my hasselblad kit and it’s the best bag hands down. I feel bad wasting money on so many others bags.
Definitely! I wish I had found it sooner.
These bags never wear out. There's a reason they've been in business and used by pros for so long and made in the USA. Love my F2, it's a workhorse.
That’s what it seems like!
Amazing bag, yes! I have a 30 year old F3. Hold the gear, safely and securely, and close. very lightweight, easy to configure.
I've used them for decades - great bags. I'm currently using a J1 which is actually too big for my needs, so I might have to revisit this model. It's "Dom-Key". Invented by ex-Vietnam war combat medic Jim Domke in 1975 who based the original on the canvas bags he used there when working as a photojournalist in Philadelphia. He sold the company to Tiffen in 1990. The design USP was being able to carry lenses and cameras stored vertically for quick access.
Thanks for the information and pronunciation! I didn’t know that!
If I remember right, the story was that his mother sewed the first bag for him when he worked for the Philadelphia Inquirer. Other photographers saw the bag and wanted one, so the company was born.
@@JimSamuel267 that’s wild! Good for his mom!
Still using my F2 from like ~30 yrs ago,
That stuck zipper. I really felt that
You gotta try out the hill country for the landscape shots here, or just go on a long hikes in the state parks. You can try out Enchanted Rock State Park for example.
Keep these coming! Love it
Lovely bag, my only critiscm would be that personally I would use a two needle stitch which would make the stitching much stronger in the long run, but otherwise nice bag.
Not very ASMR with the pounding of the hammer. :) maybe a small soundtrack would help that portion. :)
this is a really underrated video, it deserves for views
Use what you want to use stop listening to these people
Leather oz?
Beutiful bags
What weight and temper is this leather? What tannery?
Love this video. I have felt perplexed at times, trying to define what type of photographer I am. Social media often tries to nudge us into a box. Nice to know there are others, like you, who kick the box to the curb too. Also nice to know I am not the only one who captures birds out the back door. Great work!
Love your hard work leather related crafting. Wating of your next some innovative pure handmade leather related crafting. ❤
Never close your zipper before sewing your bag 😂😂😂 rookie mistake
Thanks for the video. I really love your design and the type of leather you chose for the project. May I ask: how would you incorporate an inlay in this bag? Do you have any thoughts on that? Or maybe a video? Thank you and greetings from Germany. Marco
I don't know if I'm a photographer, but I like taking photographs. Good video! Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful shots man! Subbed! Been moving more towards videography because that’s been giving me more joy lately, but stills are fun as well!
Thanks for the sub!
Loved the idea behind this one, well done!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video man!
Appreciate it!
That's the key just enjoy the process and not be worried about the likes in social networks, just enjoy it. Today I prefer to build my private gallery just in Google photos and sometimes print some of them and not be expectating about the public opinion
Love that!
I think a person who loves taking photos is a photographer. For some reason this makes me think of Garry Winogrand. There should be no question Garry Winogrand was a photographer. He also loved taking pictures. When he died, he had 2,500 rolls of undeveloped film, 6,500 developed rolls and of those rolls only 3,000 had contact sheets, and he had 300,000 prints that were unedited. He loved taking photos.
I think anyone who enjoys taking photographs, is a "photographer", in some sense anyways.. To be a professional photographer is a totally different question. My definition for a professional photographer is someone who provides and lives on taking photographs and/or providing photography as a service. Nice video and intresting topic!
I’m glad you liked it!
I love taking photos and videos, hope to become a photographer/videographer sooner than later.
