    Never knew about that. Might be a viable option. I Google searched for “Leather cup seal” & found nothing other than the MUCH larger cups for farm water pumps.

    Anybody try an accelerator pump piston cup from an old Rochester or something like that? They were leather with a spring expander inside.

    I have always wondered when undertaking one of these projects that starts as a basket case, what documents or manuals do you use to understand the reassembly sequence, and identify all the parts? None of the builders I have seen mention the documentation they used in the recap. I assume its a combination of service manuals and tribal knowledge?

    Preston tucker bought the Franklin engine co in 1948 and converted the factory into building watercooled Franklin engines for the tucker automobile 🚘. After the big three,(like our government today), bankrupted him, Franklin bought it back.

    That is beautiful. I am a RC MODEL builder and flyer. I have a set of plans for a 1/4 scale version of the 108-2 but a easy mod on the vert stab to make a -3. I would love to model it after yours.

    My Dad owned a 108-3 when I was a young kid (N519C). It was scrapped about 10 years after he and my uncle, who was a co-owner and had worked as a draftsman for Stinson Aircraft Company after World War II, sold it. I still love Stinsons and would love to own one some day.

    can you DM?PM me about the coil line oring part? I rebuilt the same masters and still have to pump the brakes. I am thinking the coil line rubber washer/oring may be bad. So looking to replace as the next step before rebuilding the wheel side. Eric Broadwell ebroadwell on stinson org.

    I found the piston stem darn near impossible to push through the stem seal in the cap. I had my local machine shop make me a 'pilot' the same diameter as the stem (cone shaped) which I used to spread the seal as the stem was pushed through the seal. Its a real tight fit.

    So the nut at the bottom of the Stem, I see on mine that it is “Crimped” and you mentioned that on your video. My question is this, do you just un-screw it off? Will it come off with that crimp? When I reinstall do I need a new nut or just re-crimp the original? Thanks

      i found out that it may break. One cylinder was no problem, the other broke beyond the nut...

    My Grandpa Raymond Stinson, Eddie’s step son, would have loved this. He was mentored by Eddie since an early age. I feel like he would’ve been in awe of this.

      Cool my grandfather was vice president of the stinson operators association from the early 30s and flew the older radial ones as air taxis based out of detroit

    Gorgeous aircraft! I know a guy that built an airplane and then he sold it. Never even flew it, he just liked the process of working and creating something. As a pilot, I don't understand that, but I can respect it.

    Listening to the RPM range question & answer made me wonder if dynamically balancing the prop w/ engine & airframe with like a DynaVibe, would help reduce the risk or time on breaking the crank? Thank you all again for editing and producing these videos.

    This video was fine as far as it went but the job was unfinished. Why stop in the middle? The speaker needed to continue to take apart the stem, insert the O-rings and reassemble everything. He even mentioned that the top O-ring was difficult which should be an important point. He leaves us hanging with a "Good luck".......sheeeesh. This video could have been great but wound up being very incomplete in spite of such a good start.

    15:35 he prefers to spend his time with his wife rather than rebuilding an aircraft. That man has his priorities right. You could always buy an aircraft, they come and go, but a good wife that you both want to spend time together (after many years together) cannot be bought with money.

    Looking into purchasing a 108. These videos have been informative. If you're generally running on non-leaded fuel out of your own field, are there any suggestions on keeping the lead buildup to a minimum when you're making cross countries and have to use 100LL?

      There’s 2 additives that can be used to scavenge lead for use in our engines, Decalin Runup & Alcor TCP. Both are essentially the same, but Alcor is the only one legal to use. The trick is that it carries a hazmat designation so you can’t take it in the plane. Decalin has not went through a certification process, so it’s technically illegal to use, but it does not have the hazmat designation, so you can carry it. It’s a Catch22 situation!
