Build Diary of 71/4" GWR King James I - PART 4
Просмотров 6 тыс.4 года назад
PART 4 The 71/4" GWR king built by one of the society members Dennis Herbert is a magnificent example of model engineering. Dennis is a totally self taught Model Engineer having had no formal technical training on the use of metal working machinery. It is truly remarkable that Dennis managed to build this engine in little over 8 years. The following video is a diary of Dennis tackling some of t...

We are fortunate to have the likes of yourself, with the dedication and skills to create such a work of art. I hope to get to see her running in the not too distant future.
Great that the RUclips link was posted in the Transport Museum Wythall Facebook page.. Nice restoration, well done !
Great video! I've subscribed! I hope to visit Wythall again this year.
Look forward to seeing you Henry. Stay tuned on our Facebook page as the dates for this years gala will be released shortly 😀
lol my friend is in here
Absolutely wonderful piece of engineering. Thank you so much for sharing your efforts. Truly wonderful 👍
Well done. I admire you for taking on a King for your first loco!
Hello friend what is the diameter of this red wheel?
btw 20:46 ...viewers must realise that is NOT a surface plate but actually a lapping plate. The gunge in the grooves should be diamond lapping paste. I've not looked beyond this.
That is a quite outstanding job, a King is reborn! (albeit in miniature form)
Lovely work. Thanks for sharing the video and processes you used to build the locomotive. Brilliant.
Very good workmanship to Exhibition standard well done. The design of this model closely follows the full sized loco and is a picture to enjoy. I am not very patient so I look to the quickest way to finish my models. I design my models to capture the looks of the original so they are not scale models. The Stevenson design of boiler works well but very tedious to make especially the silver soldering. I have found that the Smithies design of model boilers is very easy to make and using gas firing works well Another advantage of this is the water capacity is large giving a good reservoir of steam I cut out rivets to be replaced with a few nuts and bolts, laser cutting all plate work silver and soft solder used as necessary. I use my lathe for all machining with some novel ways of holding ark ward work pieces. The build time for say a 3 1/2"Gauge Schools tender loco was about 9 months.
What a incredible piece of engineering skill. I’ve been interested in steam all my life purchased the plains for William a 31/2 gauge loco by Martin Evans 30 years ago. Never started to try and build it as I sold my lathe and miller to house move. The series has given me the push to start a build it won’t be a 71/4 king for sure but maybe a Hermes. Thanks for the inspiration.
An absolutely stunning job, makes me want to start on one myself, the coincidence is that my lathe came from my friend's father who used to build locos back in the 80s. I since got a milling machine for building custom special cinematographic attachments and supports. Many thanks again for sharing this very educational and comprehensive video.
Thankyou for sharing your build. As someone whose just getting into the hobby it’s really awesome to see one of my favourite locos in 7 1/4” in such detail. Outside of this series I haven’t seen much footage of a live steam king on RUclips. Again, amazing model!
It is absolutely incredible how much time and effort this takes, not to mention the right connections and a bit of luck, very well done.
I'm older now, I'd say its not worth the effort ... what happens when you die? Another un-named locomotive up for sale at some auction house that couldn't care less? No, life is worth something more than this than to be stuck in a workshop on hurting legs, I've had a lifetime of it. Nuff sed! Plus realise these cost a lot of money for castings and materials, it goes on and on !
Technical Esctasy. 😎 👍 😁
Excellent work!
Like you I am not an engineer but have been loco building for 40ish years. Your work is excellent. I hope you have a few more locos's left in you.
Many thanks for making this diary, an absolute gem of an instructional and inspirational project on relatively low cost equipemt. Well done
Many years ago I was approached by Trevor Shortlands to cast a few items in my backyard foundry for this engine Trevor's patterns were first class. Well it had been his job for many years. His knowledge of the full size king was extensive and it is nice to see such a superb engine built from his drawings.
Thats is quite superb Dennis. A tribute to your wonderful skills and a lovely engine. I have a King James 1 but its only 7mm scale rgds Graham Powell
Very nice loco and track you have there! Did you build her yourself?
lovely! haven't yet run my Jessie "Edith" at ground level.
What scale Hunslet is this 3" or 4" Scale?
Hi Bryn, the Hunslet is a 4" scale design. It isn't a Milner Hunslet however and was drawn up by the members whilst they attended night school at Sandwell College. Thanks for commenting
The C19 and Nigel sound great, but how did you manage to load up the film in reverse in places???? LOL
Nice to be having a steam up,not had one this year yet just been running the diesels.Great shots of Nigel.
Lovely to see Nigel up and running again, sounds great.
