Wow that's a lot of work , well done for documenting and building at the same time.
Good job. Nothing ever goes to plan. In the end it all comes together.
Thanks!
Any advise on sound proofing a yurt for rain sound. I love my yurt but the rain is so loud It is deafening. I’m in BC and we get a lot of rain. I‘m thinking of MLV or rock wool.
We haven’t attempted anything to reduce the noise, but I imagine any sort of insulation added to the roof would help rain not sound so loud.
Hello from just across the border in New Brunswick. We are thinking of going off grid with a yurt. How do you make out in those hurricane force winds?force winds
Thanks for your question! We've experienced wind gusts up to 75 mph in our yurt. During those strong winds, the canvas walls and roof pulsate with the gusts, but everything holds up fine. Our yurt has the snow/wind package from Pacific Yurts, which includes two steel cables woven through the roof rafters and 2x4 supports at the ends of each rafter. Some people also add blocking between roof rafters for extra stability. I've never worried about the yurt holding up; my biggest concern is the big trees nearby. Overall, our yurt has proven to be quite resilient in high winds!
What a beautiful Northern Lights mini-doc! Super!
Just a heads up chief. You got the lowest grade insulation for Yurt.
sending love and gratitude from Oregon!!
Loved the stump slap down at the end! Also love your content, as you kids say!! ☺
I love the way the ice forms a sort of ceiling over the brook!! Thanks for another soothing and beautiful video.
That's near Rockland! Yay!! Peace and love to Maine from Oregon
really beautiful short, man! Well done
strangely peaceful and beautiful. Thank you.
Sounds like heaven to me.
Tom from Quebec Heat your yurt with compost will go up to 140f put some pipes together and a fan and you will have heat
I just wonder do you wear a chainsaw mask when you hand split what to😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
No, hand splitting requires a welding helmet
We have a tin roof to amplify the sound of the rain and it does get loud it rains a lot here
It would put me to sleep so fast!!
It can be very relaxing, like an immersive sound machine
We just survived an Epic Ice storm in our Yurt. We are in Oregon and the trees were falling all around but luckily none hit the Yurt. It was scary!
Glad to hear you were all OK! If we ever move the yurt again we are definitely clearing away any trees that could potentially hit it.
Could you please do this without the obnoxious music! You lost my interest within seconds with the music. If you are gonna use music, use it when you are not narrating and don't make it so loud!
Doesn’t rain much in florida
FR? lol
Definitely need a second location for showering due to moister. A little buddy heater for shower would work. I don't know how you control the heater if you are inside and its out side. I would love to hear what you are doing these days. I'm thinking about using the foam plywood and makeshift a shower room. That and or using a shower tent surrounded by the foam wall's.
Hey! Great video, thank you for sharing this! Just thought the music was a bit distracting, it was hard to focus on what you were saying at times!
Definitely.
Jesus. The music.
Thank you! I ove the real-life perspectives! and the music too...
Hay bails around the base will help. Stck your wood close. stay warm!
Damn, that's noisy. Is there an insulation you can put in that would help dampen the sound?
Lives in a tent Complains tent isnt like house🤦♂️
I think any part of a home can be nice sometimes, and annoying at other times. Mostly, we love the sound of rain on the roof. But, it was definitely surprising the first time we had a big down pour and realized how loud it was. Hope you’re having a great day!
Where in Maine are you? Me and my wife we are in our mid and late 20s we recently bought 40 acres up in Maine and we are soon to transition to live off grid in a yurt! I wish you the best blessing and hopefully you get to see my set up as well!
Awesome! We are in the midcoast region, 10-15 miles from the coast. Best of luck on your move/transition to off grid yurt life!
Where did you guys get your yurt from?
We found someone selling it locally through and online message board.
Why did you go out?
Looks like a great place to start building after all that heavy equipment work! Are you guys going off grid power or hooking into the grid?
Thanks! Our plan, is to have off grid power
Do you have any plumbing?
No plumbing. We have a composting toilet and water jugs with a battery powered pump
What brand of yurt do you have and do you have issues with condensation in the winter/spring? I live in north Idaho where the winters are similar to yours. Our spring is very wet and sometimes mildew builds up if things are under tarps. I'm trying to decide between a yurt that is mostly "plastic" or a traditional yurt made of natural breathable materials.
We have a Pacific Yurt (which we got used and I think is close to 20 years old). We do get some condensation/mildew issues but nothing that we can’t clean/take care of. A new Pacific Yurt probably would experience the same issues.
Do you have condensation issues? And if you don't, how do you achieve this? I also live in a yurt but I'm having this issue. And I am trying to sort how to deal with it.
We have had some minor condensation issues, but in general, when we run our wood stove and kerosene heater it dries everything out.
the music is kind of distracting to be honest.
appreciate your honesty
@@AllPathsLeadToWater no offense intended. I like the videos because I am trying to decide if I want a yurt in Maine for a full time home, and there is not a lot of good information out there for living in a colder climate not necessarily off grid.
Oooh, what music is this? It's real nice
I put a link to the music in the description.
As someone currently looking for land in Maine to build a yurt-stead. Id love to hear about how the buying process was for you regarding land. Ive been struggling to find a piece that really spoke to me. Id ALSO love to hear about thing you wish you knew in the beginning of Yurt living Great video as always!
Thanks! I appreciate the questions and will definitely address some of them in some upcoming videos.
Just moved here wish I could come out here.
Thanks for posting your review. I'm currently building an off grid shower and am trying to figure out which water heater to use. Questions for you: Are you still using this water heater? Any tips or issues with using it in the winter? Thanks a ton.
We are still using this water heater! Some issues we’ve experienced are: a mouse built a nest inside of it when we were away for a few weeks, so I’d recommend moving it somewhere safe from rodents if it will go unused for awhile. An internal pipe split in winter when the temperature got really cold. I always opened all the drains to let the water out but since some of the pipes under the cover run horizontally, enough water got trapped to split the pipe. I was able to solder a patch on and it has worked great. But since then, when it is very cold, I bring the unit inside each night to avoid another pipe breaking. I’m sure there are other ways to avoid the pipes freezing up, but this has been the easiest solution for us.
@@AllPathsLeadToWater Awesome! Thank you very much. I'll be ordering one tomorrow.
Happy Hollow Homestead... such a wonderful name for your new home. Can't wait to see the next episode!
Is it possible to retrofit your floor insulation? Glad I found your channel.
I think it would be tricky once the yurt is up, but we probably have just enough room under our platform that we could add more insulation from below. We could also put a skirt around the bottom of the platform to block the wind. Alas, I don’t think we are going to add more insulation in the near future. Glad you found our channel!
I enjoyed your video.
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
Love this video 👍👍
Thanks!
Just started building a yurt pad in SW WA, for my homemade 20' yurt. Had considered blue board as well; will definitely be skirting the underside, and I have a wood stove
Nice! That’s awesome that you are making your yurt! Are you making the lattice wall and everything? Skirting is a good idea. How cold does it get in SW WA?
A beautiful respite from the chaos. Thank you.
Distracted by your computer screen, does it move with your head?
No, it was just a screen saver
Good points. Well presented. Thank you. Respectfully, having effective "skirting" around the yurt's base will help the cold foot problem. A true Mongolian wall and roof insulating cover should be added too..
Great tip!
I searched the comments to find the song you used, because it's great. What is it? Thanks for sharing your experience. This was a fun video and helps me imagine what it would be like to stay in, or even live inside a yurt, which seems kind of adventurous and cozy! Keep up the good work dude.
Thanks so much! The song is Cold Outside by Gregory David. I added a link to the track in the description. Glad you got a sense of what it might be like in a yurt. It is definitely an adventure at times!
@@AllPathsLeadToWater Adventures are what life is all about! I found your video at the top of my search for cold conditions as I was just inputting random keywords related to insulation and "how bad does it get in a yurt" haha. Good stuff. Looks like IF I do this, I'll want to create a nice insulated, top & bottom sided/two-sided platform to keep my feet warm! Now just to figure out whether or not I can put the toilet/shower inside... a warm toilet seat is CRUCIAL for me lol. wish me luck! ;p
You content is very relaxing…and beautiful 💕
Thanks!
Wonder how that would work in Minnesota at - 20 and -30s then theirs the - 60s being the coldest I ever felt here
Wow! -60! It'd definitely be a full time job to keep a yurt warm in those temps, but with the right heat source and insulation I think it'd be doable in a yurt!
