Race to the Stones 100km - I thought this'd be easier...
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.Год назад
The Race to the Stones took place on Saturday July 8th, covering the ridgeway all the way to the standing stones at Avebury. I took this on to prove to myself that I could actually do 100km, but it turned out to be harder than I'd imagined.
Ultra Trail Snowdonia 100k - DNF!

On 13th May 2023, the UTS Snowdonia 100km took place. I had my heart set on getting this brutal mountain race done and, although it didn't quite work out, it was a great adventure!
Southwest Traverse 45 mile Ultra Marathon in Cornwall
Просмотров 3892 года назад
May 29th, 2022, was the Southwest Traverse, an ultra marathon that goes from Lizard point in Cornwall, through to Lands End. It is a gruelling endurance race in one of the most picturesque places in the country. This is the story of my run.
I ran RTTS in 2023 too. Pit stop 5 was fun by the time I go to it, there were baby pigs walking around, I thought I was seeing things! I hit the last 12k not long after you but my goodness the thick thick fog had come down, you could only see about 8ft infront of you. Did anyone else experience the fog?
@@kingsley6236 I remember a bit of fog, might be that I missed the worst of it. It’s the slick underfoot conditions in the final few miles that I remember most. I was wearing road shoes, which did not fare well. Other people were having to hang onto each other to stop themselves falling over!
@ i remember that last 3km to 4km well! Rutted track with a thin layer of mud over hard compacted ground, it was like ice! But when you look back, it is things like that you share with everyone and say “do you remember when….” Us runners are weird, but we have an amazing community.
Amazing work well done 😊😊 that was really enjoyable to watch
@@raleyadventures Thank you!
Nicely done, Dave 👍 Warm and raining isn't a great combo!
Great film and useful recce of the course. Thanks 👍
Have you run this before? I'm in it this year😮
@@danny-boyjoshus1058 Yep. Ran it a couple of years ago. It’s quite runnable in many places, the trick is not to blow up on the uphills! Hope you have a great race when you get there 🙂
Great video mate, scared the shit out of me as I’m doing the classic quarter in 4 weeks! 😮
Ha! Yeah, it was a bit of a struggle. I was developing the flu and couldn’t eat properly - as long as you get the nutrition & hydration on point then you’ll have a great day. Good luck!
@@davebte Cheers mate!I’ve walked from Lands end to the Minack and back a few years ago and I’m under no illusion how tough it’s going to be.👍
Yes looked challenging. Best wishes on the next escapade!
Fantastic to see you out running out back there. They're are an overlooked range - hope you return. Well done. Mark
Love your approach to this DNF, that course is unbelievable in terms of vertical and terrain. So hot as well. You reflected on the go bit and the what you could of done differently. Sometimes it’s just not the right day and that’s it. You took it on the chin. You are a legend mate. 😎
Nice one mate!! You came flying by me on the first downhill. Great video thanks for sharing
Well done on your race. The downhills were such a relief after the climbs that I was tanking down them!
A massive well done Dave, I congratulated you at 08:17 in this video, I was with my son ,race numbers 469 & 470. Longest run we've ever done, couldn't believe how wet my feet got 😊. Great event and great people. Definitely going to do it again next year. Take care Jason 👍🏻
Congratulations on your run, it must’ve been fun to do it as a pair. Maybe the 40 will tempt us back at some point 😀
@@davebte well, we've entered the limit trails beast of the beacons 40 next month 😬, see if we can complete it 🤞🏻
I was questioning your life choices for a minute there, Dave 😅 Well done for getting around such a challenging course. The conditions looked decently tricky.
Definitely some ups and downs! Thanks Mark.
Fantastic effort. Well done.
Awesome running Dave! Huge kudos on completing the ultra mate! The GoPro certainly doesn't do that first hill any justice. I ran the marathon and it was ace. I also have a video from the race on my channel if you want to check it out. Great video bud! 👏😎🤘
Thanks Ben! I'll have to check your video out, the marathon route looked really interesting 👍
Thanks for sharing. That looked like a tough course. The fact that there is hand over hand sections is insane to me. That moves from ultra running to ultra mountaineering.
Well done, Dave. That looked like a cracking race. I imagine the second lap was tough. The camera never shows how steep the climbs are but I'm sure your legs knew about it 😅👍🏻
Well done all the same.
Fantastic effort Dave, congratulations on a brilliant achievement. Really enjoyed the video too!
Nicely done. Loved your perspectives. Well done for being a fellow finisher!
Well done in the race and well documented. It seems that the flatter courses can be just as challenging as the ones with lots of climbing, due to the repetitive nature of the movement. Your experience clearly helped you push through the lows. Any other races planned now?
Cheers, appreciate it. Nothing due in the immediate future, but I have signed up for the South Downs 100 miler for next year!
Well done. I DNF'd at the CP at 72km. My troublesome hip and calf struck again and I know from experience that things don't get better when it happens. The weather was weird, blazing hot or tipping down and cold with not much inbetween! things get hard when you're 58 😪
Good effort getting that far, I was in bits at 72km without any real injuries. Hope the niggles die down and you can get back out there!
Thanks for sharing. Lots of good tips and lessons to be learnt here. My trouble is, I am a 60+ runner but I dream of doing a 100k , that’s why I enjoy watching other people doing it 👍 One day I’ll be able to what you do.
Thanks for the comment and best of luck with your training. The race to the stones could be a great first time ultra. There are walking options and 50k options. Lots of people did the 100k over two days as well.
Well done great achievement.... 👍🏻👍🏻🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️🥳🥳🥳x
we must have been really close together near capel curig, i left there at 19:59 haha
Yeah, we were! I think I got there about 20:04 :-)
Good effort Dave. I got a DNF doing the 58k jurassic coast challenge that weekend. First hot day of the year. Was absolutely gutted
Cheers: tough break with the DNF, but we come back stronger; I guess it’s a natural hazard of doing ultra challenges. I’m hoping I’ll appreciate the next finish all the more as a result of this DNF!
50km with that terrain and vert is AWESOME. Loads to learn from it and love your attitude in getting 50km done and making a decision to sit back, enjoy the ride (view) and live to fight another day. No need to injure yourself or your mindset by pushing something that wasn't going to happen on that given day. Back on the horse buddy, build your base again and take your running up a notch. Throw in some events that will be kinder and use them as stepping stones in the process. You will be back and you will prevail.
Cheers Shaun, appreciate it :-)
@Dave, 50k of that course is still tougher than pretty much any other race in the UK. Thanks for a good, honest, race report. I finished this year but it took me three tries. You will be back and better prepared. See you in Llanberis next year? 👍
Cheers, appreciate it! Well done on getting it done this year, superb effort. A race like this has to rate as unfinished business, so I’ll likely be back at some point, if not the ‘24 then the year after!
Good honest race summary. Great effort to do that height and distance. The sun can catch you out at this time of year in particular as the body is not used to it. Best wishes with your training and your channel. Just subscribed.
Great effort! it was a super tough day, I did the 50k and everybody I spoke to said they ran out of water before CP2, but you live and learn!
Well done! I did it on Sunday, what a brutal race, nothing prepared me for the second section, from Penzace to the finish. Now, I can use your video to explain to my family and friends how hard it was.
Congratulations! Looked like a good day for it. That last third is a beast, for sure. Hope your recovery goes well.
Thanks, it will take a few days to walk properly again. All the best
Wow sounds like you really had to push through there. 'Keep moving' sums it up. Well done!
Great video mate, you showed some awesome grit and determination to keep going despite wanting to quit. You kept going. I've made a 40 mile race video from last week go check it out 👍👍👍👍
