Scratching with Audio Cassettes - Prototype Device

This is a video of the early stages of my portable cassette scratch player. The device is in the very early stages and is a proof of concept. I will post more videos when I have developed it further. Please leave any suggestions in the comments bar.
yeah the other night i was jammin VS2 and found realy strugling , cos when you pressing down those buttons ,or turning isolators hands are covering screan and sequencer steps . toggle reali solves almost every problem
That's a brilliant idea! I will do the same on mine very soon😊 Do you think this method could be applied also to the Func button? I would love to have a switch for all of my volcas, with the Func On or Off, instead of pressing Func+any other button every time. That would help a lot more the workflow and playability. Thanks in advance! Ps: what's the other mod next to Midi port??
Would love to see how to do this so I could try
Did you cut the rotating nubs off so it can slide?
Hey there. If you have a computer & access to the internet you can always try digitizing your vinyl record albums to something like Audacity. What do you think about that?😀
great worked out!. That is what I call "Know How". Tell Korg fellas.
Very nice video, Please make more video sir. thanks
to many technic , i put my finger on the tape and scratch !!! when i was 7 years old i find it out , that it works !!! with alf cassette !!! but now i use 1210 , tr8 and akais !!! but stupid def self made stuff !!!!!
Great idea! I was thinking if this could be done by modding the firmware, but maybe this is even better!
Could you just hold the camera STILL ? Or mebbe just put it on a tripod or Gaffa tape it ? This is Visual Vomit...
I’m 18 and i do it
@PlasticParty: their is a risk for the machine to eat the tape if you do scratching with it. I remember when I was a kid, I was curious about how it work mechanically, since the cover of the cassette player broke off I had the opportunity to see how it work and I did not care about the casette tape that I used for testing because does song where annoying for an older kid, they where song for toddlers and I did not have brother, and neither sisters, while it his playing if you try to slow down the take out spool, the tape does not get eaten but it slow down the music, but if you slow down the take-in spool while it his playing, it will eat the tape because of the pinch roller and captsan, but as soon as you let go of the take in spool, it undo eating the tape, and the music sound wonkey when it undo eating the tape. I had another boom box with the cover still on it. so I was not worry to broke that one.
That's cool, my brother is musician, I'll show him this gem :D Great idea!
Amazing mod... and the spot where you placed the midi out port is very confortable. Its a shame you didnt took a single pic of the soldering you did... so thanks almost 4 nothing!
2019 and keep going for me :-)
Me still in 2019 and keep going :-)
Me too. I very love cassettes. It was my childhood and I using them recording to nowadays.
I wouldn't store my records in front of the heater 😨
MrMissingReel - don’t worry, that radiator hasn’t been on since those records were there
I'm still using cassette in 2019, but also Minidisc and vinyl too. I have MD in one car and Cassette player in the other. Its a great sound and its also not constrained by a monthly subscription for music you never truly own. On a rainy day there's something nice about sitting indoors making a mix, printing labels etc.
Hi, I took mine apart to have a look, ready to do your fab mod. Before I proceed I just wanted to check your instructions, which I have read on your comments here. Looking at the pad which the actual button makes contact with. There are 6 rows top to bottom of exposed copper tracks. One set on the left, one set on the right. The idea is to solder directly onto the already exposed copper, top right and bottom left - or scrape away some screen print adjacent which is what I understood from the actual video? Sorry if it seems like a dumb question, I just wanted to be sure before I destroy my lovely sample lol.
Hi there, I scrapped away a small amount of the 'rows' to expose the copper underneath. I used very fine gauge wire and at the far end so not to interfere with the rubber button function. I hope this helps.
Hey thanks for posting this. Been looking at a bewildering array of toggle switches. Just to make it easier, any chance you could recommend the switch you actually used for a UK user? Thanks in advance.
its a sub mini spst toggle switch
I would recommend you get an IKEA kallax 2x4 to store your records and maybe also use it as a stand for you setup! Nice room tour video!👍👍
Thank you for your comment. I like the IKEA record storage units but they wouldn't be ideal for DJing as its not convenient to flick through the records. I much prefer crates for quick and easy access.
How about your Minidisc, do you have any?
I occasionally record to minidisc. The quality is excellent but they are expensive to only use as a one time record and I actually quite like the sound of cassette
@@NicollGallery Now a days a lot of the older format has double to triple in costs..I been buying mini disk since 2006 when they were dirt cheap on ebay...I have probably 200+ sealed and 25 ones recorded...Cassettes same thing..I started again collecting them since 2004 or so after a break from 1995 were I donated 100's sealed..Now I have 280 sealed and 40 recorded ones I used from my collection...I love older formats in audio to videos..Nice collection you got so far..
awesome idea!
Nice mod
Thank you. The mod has helped a lot with playing it live.
Great idea! I just did the same thing to mine thanks to you.
Thank you for your feedback and kind words. I’m happy that is has helped you out.
Nice collection my friend!👍👍
itimmy101 - thank you for your comment. I didn’t imagine that anyone would view it! I’ve added a lot more to it in the last few months. I’ll make an update video later in the year
@@NicollGallery thats great!😁👍
great idea, makes it far more tactile and increases workflow
Nice. Got a thumbs up from me bud :)
i have still got my tapes i never played them lol we have gotten to lazy to pop in a tape and rewind fast forward and play or eject
That´s a really handy mod, I´m afraid my mute button will fail from overuse. Can you post instructions please? Thanx a lot for sharing!
MarkusAudio: its a technically simple mod but requires a bit of skill to neatly solder to the contact tracks without damaging anything.
Since modding my V Beats snare I´m ready to open my Sample, in fact trying to figure out individual outputs.
@@MarkusAudio Did you do it? That would be a damn great thing.
If you open up the sample and take both board out of the case you can see the pad underneath the mute button. The pads look like they have a bunch of lines on them. If you solder a wire to the top line on the right pad and a wire to the bottom line on the left pad and then connect those to a switch you can do this. Be very careful soldering, if you use too much you will make unwanted connections and your mute will not function correctly. It is easy to reverse this using desoldering wick.
I made this... MIDI translator too... www.jindrichnikles.cz/?p=164
Hi please explain how you did this, it would be very useful to me and my live set.

4:30, you can replace all the batteries with 2 5v lithium packs in series. Replacing 6x1.5V cells with 2 5V packs.
Cool mod, really useful. So how did you solder this? Straight under the button? Or did you find a better place to solder somewhere on the trace?
Nelson Cole Reis : i soldered directly to the contact tracks underneath the button
Great video. But my favorite part was defiantly.. *sets up camera* okay..*drop*..FUCK!
Dude did you made the crossfader yourself? if yes wOW amazing you built this in 2013 and look now all these portable crossfaders like FriskFader & RaidenFader haha DIY all the way
Ha Ha yeah I made that myself. I actually made the fader box a few years before the video. Cheers for the comment.
What cassette player is this?
If u manage that the casset keep playing...by the scratch movement, that would be B*R*I*L*L*I*A*N*T!
+PhysioA Im actually working on a new project related to tape scratching. Im designing and building a new unit from the ground up. I will make the 'scratching travel' longer so you can play longer samples.
L.D. Nicoll Keep up the good work. You have a fantastic mind of technic!*thumb up
Pretty cool.. Do you have a video of you putting together?
what brand/model walkman is this?
+MC Eleven Sorry for super late reply. Ive never gotten used to the new RUclips. I dont know why it doesnt tell you anymore when someone has commented. It is a Sony Walkman. I forget the model but I know it was one of the last ones. Its a budget player.
The D' that comes before Nicoll!
what D?
You forgot the 'D' in my name Mr Smith!
liam nicoll bringing the 80s back:
This is pretty clever.
0:50 - FUCK!~
0:48 - OK
would love to know how you made that fader box!
