@ He has another video eating them at a get together in a park. Just figured they would eat them if they caught them or kill the invasive species. Don’t think it benefits anyone throwing them back.

It’s a fair question. I guess there are a few ideas we have. 1. Our Broward canals are loaded with many species of exotics. All of which eat natives. The interesting thing is that peacocks and clown knife fish are celebrated while snakeheads are demonized. I’ve never really been able to find the rational with this. Peacock bass eat the heck out of natives… why aren’t they being killed??? 2. All of our waterways are man made canals and ponds. It’s really not a native ecosystem to begin with. These canals didn’t exist 60-70 years ago. All the “native” fish species were brought in too. 3. While I don’t mind killing fish for eating or harvesting for other purposes - I’m not into killing things unless there’s a real purpose. These are my thoughts. I’d be happy to hear other thoughts on it - not saying I have all of this figured out. I appreciate the question.

@@watchyourlip3209 Thank you for your response. I guess it’s tough to say where a line can be drawn. I’m in Miami and we don’t have that many snakeheads in my area. I’ve fished lakes that have bluegills, shell crackers, cichlids, peacocks, and largemouths in what seem to be proportionate quantities relative to forage/predator. While I agree with your points, I’ve heard that snakeheads decimate the other fish populations. If peacocks and other “invasives” did the same, then there would be no largemouths in lakes I’ve fished. Doesn’t seem to be the case in my area. Would you say that the amount of other species have significantly decreased over the last few years now that snakeheads are everywhere in Broward waterways? Or do you see the other fish populations holding steady even though snakehead numbers have increased?

@ good question. When I moved to Broward from Palm Beach the snakeheads were already here so I don’t have experience prior to the arrival of snakeheads. The c14 chain still has lots of largemouths and bluegill etc… we have chain pickerel, several catfish species, lots of bowfin, gar and other smaller species. We also have flourishing shiner and shad populations. The salt water species come up through the spillways as well - snook , tarpon, mullet, some times jacks ladyfish and even the occasional mangrove snapper. It’s a weird water system. There’s no scenario where all these species naturally coexist. It’s all a man made system. The Everglades on the other hand…. That’s a different conversation. I’m not sure how many largemouths were here before the peacocks and snakeheads showed up. There is still a stable population of largemouths here in the C14 and neighboring canals and lakes. Lorenzo caught 6 of them in an hour or so the other day on roadside lakes and canals. In my opinion, Mayan cichlids are a bigger problem than any of them. They are everywhere and are extremely aggressive to smaller fish. I wish I would hear more about the problems that they may (or may not) be causing.
