What now. While drilling larger screw holes in the lid of this pretty and shiny Comacho cigar box, I chipped the finish. Not just a little. Not repairable. So I scraped off the rest of the clear coat and sanded. Should I do the same to the rest of the box or leave it original and paint only the lid? Tell me what you think. I have to decide pretty quick, I'm really wanting to play this guitar!

    The piezo has a broad frequency response if it goes into a very high impedance. A guitar amp usually does not provide a high enough impedance to preserve the bass. It is a capacitive source being loaded by a moderate resistance amplifier, and that is a high-pass filter. Try an old Baggs Paracoustic DI or other 10 megohm preamp.

    • @WoodPortGuitars
      @WoodPortGuitars 27 дней назад

      Thanks for the info. Since that video, I have done some reading up on piezo pickups and the front end of amps. I have learned that a piezo disc pickup likes to see a very high impedance in the 10M to 20M range. After looking at a few amp schematics, I see most of them have around 1 to 2M on the input impedance. So, on my little LM386 based amp, I have been trying higher input impedance, so far up to 5M. The higher the input impedance, the more the piezo likes it, but you start messing with the sound magnetic pickups. It has been a blast learning and experimenting with them. But in the end, piezo disc pickups have their limitations. They are great for inexpensive amplifying of a cbg, I still prefer wire wound magnetic pickups. This whole video came about because I watched a C.B.Gitty video on piezo and capacitors. I had to try it. I am leaning more towards an onboard piezo preamp. Most of those circuits have the very high impedance you mentioned. That will require an in the guitar battery. Seems like always a trade off. Thank you for watching! Thank you for commenting! This subject has been out of mind for a few months, thank you for bringing it back. Cheers!

    • @billhart8729
      @billhart8729 26 дней назад

      @@WoodPortGuitars Another trick, if you have plenty of signal strength, is to put a small capacitor across the piezo wires. That makes a divider that lowers both signal level and impedance, so you can maybe get away with a lower amplifier impedance for the same frequency response. If you go too far with this, though, you will drop the signal into the noise and hum.

    I really like your neck jig and I WILL make a modified version but with slots instead of holes. Maybe use the paste wax on the sides too. By way of thanks I would like to share some tips with you from my batch production method. I've now made 180+ GBGs I use only Hard Maple for necks. In buy a 10ft board say 6.5" wide from a wholesaler not a box store. This works out as $3.50 per neck. Hard maple requires very little sanding and looks great. One or maybe two coats of Mahoneys Wanut Oil and they are silky smooth, and durable. I use only heads over neck scarf joints. I stopped making fancy heads for the guitars because I use an edge planer for flattening the necks and a table router to shape the necks. I do sometimes add wings after the neck is complete. Very rarely though. My customers like the plain look and It helps me contain the cost. I cut my frets on a mighty mite table saw. I cut .018 slots which give a really tight fit without glue. ttps://ruclips.net/video/FkNmLIJdoHk/видео.html All my builds have the strings through the box and neck. In order to line up the holes for the strings I lay a rule along each side of the neck and mark back to tape on top of the box. I can them drill the holes between these lines. I do burn a lot of rustic boxes with a torch, but I have stopped burning the necks because it can distort the neck. I now use alcohol dyes in various combinations on the neck and sometimes on the box too. Of course the maple looks great on it's own. I quit using piezzo pick ups a few years ago, and only use magnetic pick ups now. Just far superior especially with gain on the amp. I have stopped making my own boxes except for custom builds. Again to cut costs by saving time PS. I'm retired, and while building axes is my hobby, my passion is turning wood on the lathe. Thanks again for the jig. Jim, Crafted in Montana.

      I had to look that up. I didn't know such a thing existed. I like it. Made me think of simulating the binding on guitars, with the tape on cbg's. Awesome. Thank you for sharing, and thank you for watching.

    What products did you use for the original finish?

      The paint is Rustoleum Painters Touch 2X Ultracover Flat Black. The clear coat is the same, Rustoleum 2X Clear Lacquer Semi-Gloss. 3 - 4 coats of each paint and clear, with a light sanding with 320 grit sandpaper , between clear coats. I use this paint because I can get it at my local Ace Hardware, close to the shop. I am sure there are better paints, but I am happy with the results I get from the Rustoleum. Thanks D!

    Cool! Use a Noisegate on your pedalboard, or most modeling amps have them.... that will solve your feedback issues.

    How the heck did you scratch that up? You could put a pickguard on it. I’m waiting on Pure Evil.. 😊

      Pick scratches? Not sure they were in a weird spot. Thinking about the pickgaurd material. I have to finish up the current build first, I call it little blackie. Thanks Steve!!

    Of course because I searched for Del Puckett's Just Tempered and Equal Tempered videos what pops up on my feed when it refreshed? Del's "the sound of a Just Tempered fretboard" from 6 years ago! 🤣
