I am an Alaskan born musician/luthier currently living in Tasmania.
I make original designs inspired by the concepts of Austalian luthiers Greg Smallman and Peter Biffin.

Short scale Brauchli mandolin
The scale is 322mm which is about the same as a capo on the first fret. The result is effortless playing with light strings. There is always an option to put on heavier strings for more aggressive playing, but I am finding a lot of older players like me need an instrument that relaxes the left hand. I do some playing in the middle with my fingernails, which is how I used to play live with a pickup.

Oh Suzanna
Просмотров 4744 месяца назад
This song has a special significance for me. When I was about 6 my father finally gave me the banjo that I wanted. (Beverly Hillbillies of course) At the time I didn't realize that it was actually a ukulele disguised as one. Nonetheless I sat there and he showed me how to play Oh Suzanna. It was just the melody, but it showed me how you take the notes you can hear in your head and then find the...
Brauchli cittern guitar with concentric bracing

I finally found time to try my concentric bracing on my cittern guitar body. The result is rich and smooth, so I couldn't help but play yet another version of "Misty"

I really need to make one of these for myself. This one is off to Switzerland.

This is basically my mandolin design enlarged into a guitar. A powerful mid centered sound.
Waltz from Sleeping Beauty
Просмотров 181Год назад
I have recently had access to Disney streaming. Of course I couldn't resist going straight to some of the classics from my childhood. Sleeping Beauty was considered a flop as it didn't have the energy of Snow White. It's high point is the artist Eyvind Earle who did all the trippy backgrounds but left Disney before the movie was released. This Disney version of the waltz is modified from the Tc...
Engelmann cittern guitar
Просмотров 337Год назад
This guitar was made in 2017. (in those free and easy days before the pandemic) I am posting this because the owner is currently trying to sell it and I think it is an awesome instrument. I would love to hear what it sounds like played in as it is the only Engelmann version and this wood really does respond to playing. (In the video it is only a few days old.) I hope to put some contact details...
2008 guitar with tung oil finish
Просмотров 271Год назад
This was my main guitar for some years. The Blackwood top seems to give it a warm tone with clear treble and a dry bass. I have been using cobalt octoate as an additive to the tung oil to dry it overnight.

Haven't made a slide guitar for awhile. Now I just have to remember how to play it.
80's guitar final stage

Spraying a guitar in Tasmania can take a while especially in winter. This one is now finished. The concentric bracing makes it mellow but it has good volume so there is a sense of power as well.
Rebuild of 80's Brauchli guitar

I just put concentric bracing on this guitar that I made over 40 years ago. I have tuned it down to D as my current guitars are mostly shorter scale and I couldn't cope with the tension (sore fingers). This recording is a good example of how this bracing seems to enhance the bass even for a small bodied instrument.
Concentric bracing on a steel string
Просмотров 254Год назад
This is the bracing I have been using on the octave baritone ukes. I was keen to hear it on steel strings so I put a new soundboard on this wrecked pawn shop guitar. I fitted the top 3 days ago so it still needs playing in. I am in love with the tone, especially the high notes. In that respect it is very like my archtop versions. This guitar has a narrow neck so I am having some difficulty gett...

Tansey's Fancy on double octave baritone uke
strings are too light and with almost no elasticity which gives instrument quite questionable sound... the energy is low but the overtones are sharp. Clearly mandolin is not a F1 racecar.
Sweet !
Very nice. Working on playing it on the banjo and your video was very helpful.
Brilliant design. Slumping over a standard acoustic for years is not good for the posture ! So this is a great design
Lovely tune. Thanks!
Love the interpretation and feel …for me it’s up there with Joe Cooley’s playing and Planxty …thank you for posting
A neglected niche in the market : older players with diminishing capabilities.
unplugged !!👍👍👍👍
Looks like a mandolin
Excellent sound! As an octave mandolin player myself I found it quite difficult to play fingerstyle because of the double strings, but it seems you have no notable issue with it. Needless to say I'm impressed 🙏🎵
Sometimes I can't tell the difference between a mandolin and an 8-string ukulele.
What a great idea and tone. Did you have to brace the top more lightly, or could any octave mandolin be strung this way?
The bracing on this is more like classical guitar bracing with a fixed bridge. On a standard design polymer would sound very subdued
Excellent👋
Beautiful made and played, amazing
Beautiful❤
Best demonstration on RUclips imo! Amazing!
That's really nice. Really kind of alive sounding on the strings.
Wow, sounds so great❤️😻👍👍🎶🎶🎶☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️
YOU have been practicing again, I can hear that!
So joyful
Beautiful! You must have one of the best jobs ever, making and then playing all of your amazing creations! Maybe in another life for me! Thank you for your music and craft! Be well!
Amazing sounding instrument and great playing too.
What string gauges are you using here? I got ahold of an old suzuki mandocello for 8000 yen (about 60 dollars) and want to put nylon strings on it. I doubt I can find nylon strings that will reach the low C, but I'm thinking it would sound nice in an octave mandolin or bouzouki range.
Good version
👏👏👍❤️
Wow, so rare to see someone finger picking instead of using a pick! Nice work!
Absolutely beautiful. Go raibh míle maith agat! Thank you very much! 🇮🇪🎶
I'd like to know what mandolin you were testing! Great piece
As My Irish and Scottish Granny would say .. "What a lovely Bloke"
Simple and sweet. Is black wood the name of the mandolin maker?
My guess is that it's the name of the tune, but not 100% certain.
The maker is the player Daniel Brauchli
Almost sounds like a lute. With some gut strings it would be one! Beautiful!
Love it!
Very nice! Thank you for posting this ❤💙
Wow pretty I like! A lot of sustain.
Sehr schön gespielt
Another beautiful instrument Daniel…your picking shows it’s tonal qualities so well.
I don't know what normally would be strung on an instrument like this, but these sound really crisp clean. However, lots of finger noise and scratching takes away from the overall grade quality. Also, I just started learning how to play the Oud, and I'm having a really difficult time getting any kind of volume out of the instrument, even though it's a very well-made beautiful instrument from Tunisia. One of the strings broke and I replaced it with a classical guitar string a G Dash string. And that particular string rings with more than the rest of them. Do you think the strings that you're using on this OC/mandolin w would work on an Oud?
The headroom on nylon strings instruments is much small than steel strings, so you may have to adjust your expectations. The advantage here is that the dynamic range of gut and nylon is a broad spectrum rainbow of sound that can't be replicated with steel
As wonderfully demonstrated by their master here ruclips.net/video/V2zZl7Vifzw/видео.htmlsi=aChRrr4w76GLOcXt
Really nice, very enjoyable
sounds GREAT
Is that western cedar ?
yes .. with carbon bracing
this is simply wonderful
I call it a Citternuitar but it does have a special sound that's kinda in between a Guitar & a Cittern hence the name.
Beautiful, thank you for sharing.
Very nice
Such a lovely sounding instrument, and so masterfully played.

That's extraordinary, in all regards! I've used tung oil for furniture, and it's given my favorite finish, and have been considering it for an upcoming acoustic instrument build, and your work here has convinced me to most definitely use it! The depth of color in your instruments finish is only equaled by the fullness of its tone. That's stunning work! I especially appreciate the symmetry and artful soundholes you made!
Using oil on a softwood sound board will damp the tone. I only use it on a hardwood top like Blackwood.
@@danielbrauchli Okay, thank you so much for the hint!
how is it at staying in tune?
Like a classical guitar, once it settles it rarely needs tuning.
why not use nylon tuners?
Nylon tuners are a poor design that were meant to feel like the wooden pegs they replaced. Also slotted headstocks do not tune well. I have no interest in tradition unless it proves to be the best option.
i'd like to weigh in here on this particular subject… I have horrible arthritis which I have battled for the past 50 years. The arthritis has won, but I'm still able to play a little bit. When I bought my Oud, I had to go through, in my head, whether or not I should buy an instrument with the traditional pressure pegs, like a violin, or buy an instrument that has guitar like tuners. As it happened the instrument that I fell for, had guitar tuners. So I agree, at the end of the day, that worrying about what other people might think of me as a newcomer with a "westernized" set up or something not in keeping with traditional kit was a waste of my emotional energy and I probably wouldn't end up playing the instrument all that much if I couldn't tune it!
Too good!
