One of the developers was interviewed on this, and they literally said "There were supposed to be female dragon elders, but the models made it so hard to make them look good as female that they just scrapped it and made them all male." They considered converting some of the elders to female to show case more diversity, but decided to stick with the original since all the dragons were voiced even back then and it'd be awkward to replace them, thus changing the "vision". Though for the first time in gaming history, the lack of females wasn't because of sexism and a hatred for females in video games, but mostly due to technical limitations at the time AND the lack of a woman in the studio to voice act a female dragon at the time, so they didn't want to do anything too silly. And for spyro 3, the lack of female dragons is more so coincedence as they just used the same models and dragons from the first game, but outside of that clearly had a lot more females anyway (just other species). So the actual reason for the lack of them is just coincedence and it's probably canon that there are indeed females but we just didn't see them cause they couldn't be modeled nor did they have a reason to show up in particular yet. A Hero's Tail (which thank you for showing love to that game, it was the first Spyro game I owned and I have a deep love for it, despite how tedious Blink's missions can be, the music is absolutely godly too), showcased the world more akin to what they would've done in Spyro 1 if they had a female voice actress, giving us the Nursury dragon and Ember openly flirting with Spyro to indicate they probably date the same way we do. Given Spyro didn't react surprised he saw a girl and treated her as if he grew up in the same school or neighborhood, it's safe to assume female dragons existing are normal. Even Cynder's case was kind of more the "exception" than the rule because she was kidnapped as an egg and raised by an evil dragon, but yet Spyro still seems to go out of his way to protect her.

XD Ironically, I think 99% of what I hear about these games revolve entirely around Cynder, I don't think anyone really talks about Spyro himself except for context and maybe some Dark Spyro stuff but she's kind of the only reason people care about the games despite their subpar gameplay. So to be fair, she kind of already hard carries.

Dunno how it really fits into all of this, but I feel it's worth pointing out that a lot of birds, at least (which are technically still reptiles, technically), tend to lay what basically amounts to "blanks" if there is no male around to fertilize them. I think some turtles can do this, too; tho in _their_ case it might've just been bc the two turtles in question were really really old so it didn't take like it should've (saw this in some program- either Nature or NOVA- on PBS a _very_ long time ago; context being that these were a type of critically endangered freshwater turtle that had few members left in captivity and I _think_ might've been considered extinct in the wild at that time?? so, captive breeding program and all that). Again, not sure how this is relevant, other than I feel like it _should_ be. Also for all we know, there could be a combination of things going on here. Oh- and while it's mostly irrelevant and hard to determine for sure, a lot of the hatchlings in Year of the Dragon seem to be female-coded, at least in their names and in some of the Reignited version's appearances (bows n shit; bc otherwise How Else Know if Gurl™???). Not that literally _any_ of this matters since this was entirely facetious, or at least mostly.

I grew up on this game. I was always left confused. The way you just get thrown into the story with all these characters always made me think this game was a sequel. I wanted to understand the story. But this game wasn’t really meant for 6 year olds to understand. Back then I thought this game was so real. It’s funny now.

I never liked the spyro games, however I loved this game. It's so cool, all the combo's the special elements, loved how cynder had elements that aren't the basic dragon shoots fire like spyro.

I found that spyro also had certain broken things in his elements.

I've been saying it for years, that this game is gonna flop the moment when they're delaying this game for like 2 times now, but none of my gaming friends actually listened to me And they literally made a grave mistake of deciding it to be an always online slop in the light of The Crew 1 is getting the servers going offline for good, like I seriously couldn't trust a company of their caliber could maintain the servers for a very long time, let alone this "offline patch" they're promised by the time they're done with this game (th are they, Polyphony Digital?)

ngl, I thought this was gonna be a deep dive on Cynder's character, being stolen from her home, then transformed into a monstrous puppet for around a decade killing hundreds if not thousands, and when she's eventually freed, she seems...oddly fine after learning of what she had gone through.

Very nice Video! XXL 2 was along with Jak and Daxter my favourite PS2 game. I think it is the most polished one of the 3. I also started with speedrunning these two games. That was fun!

As someone who finished Arthur and the Invisibles, I can tell you it's a long sluggish game with many dangerous (unfair even) sections you can easily have an instadeath in, with an addition of quick time events too, and that's something I don't want to play ever again. My only motivation to finish it was testing someone's widescreen mod to ensure it wasn't game-breaking.

Oh, I'm so happy that after our last quick talk you went towards making a full video about this! I've barely started but I want to comment now about why "Strange Dragonflies": the name of the studio was made out of lyric of a french song, "Volutes" by Alain Bashung (1991). Just for the trivia! And yes, buggy Sparks is... universal. At least not on 7th gen hardware. Speedrunners like me can somewhat manage. The opening 1000 can be dispatched by hand in 17 minutes. Still, yeah of course combos drain some of the bar on usage, so you can do them infinitely without recharging. And yes, it should make the enemy numbers go down while under a tornado, it's capable of defeating enemies that are off screen basically! 17:23 FUUUUN Fact, the cart you see here was the very first item the devs picked from the PS2 version to start bumpmapping for the x360 release, literally the first "next-gen" touched up asset. 18:59 I love how you accidentally did the dash glitch off these crates, when speedrunners actually do that on the bags just ahead to completely skip the entire "3 torches" door and its minigames. I'll conclude with this last edit, it would be fantastic to have a long chatter with you about general things XXL/Spyro in terms of engine quirks, developer insights and other things you might not know.
