I have had back pain for 2 years now due to the first incorrect technique you showed. I’m not really sure if it was a stress fracture but I’ve seen 2 physios and the pain gets frustrating at night or after dance. I also take an anti inflammatory daily. I wonder how to treat it. The physios have taught me to engage my core and not hyperextend each way but idk. My next bet is a chiropractor.

This was the best lesson on the anatomy of the arabesque that I have ever seen in my life! I needed this! I’m an older dancer, and the compression in my low back just kills me when I do it wrong. I’m going to practice and practice what you have taught here! Thank you!❤

I only partially agree with that. The dancer must move her back forward, bit straight not down, to prevent that tight crease in the back

Both the boy and the girl sort of figured it out intuitively: the speed at which you plie and enter the turn. A pirouette is an athletic "explosive" movement, so it makes no sense to pause or "gather oneself" beforehand. I don't think it's too common to emphasize this, but even this young boy realizes it. He goes immediately from the plie, while the girl does the "double plie," because her body (everyone's) wants to do it the same as the boy did (standard athletic stretch reflex), but maybe she got used to a slower preparation somewhere along the line. I think you see this often in females. It's the equivalent of taking a small plie before your "main plie" for a jump; there's no real point to it, unless you're trying to fill time. Many combinations have too much music for each turn, until you're doing several pirouettes, so most people [beginners] consciously slow down the whole process, maybe to detriment. It's like teaching someone to throw a baseball. You can show stills of the important positions, but you can't do the whole movement slowly. Olympic weightlifting is another example. Even when they're warming up with light weights, they keep a high speed, because it's simply intrinsic to the technique. If there was better cross-talk between dance, exercise science, physics, maybe dancers would improve faster.

This is great advice! Now returning to ballet after several years off I am even more conscientious about technique to prevent injury. Always had trouble with my extensions and felt like I was gripping in my back which is very limiting for getting the leg above 90. The correction I always got when I was younger was to focus on lengthening the back and to focus on keeping my back square but this was a missing piece of the puzzle.

In the "ugly" line her hips rolled outward causing her hips to roll into her upper back (I'm not he best at explaining) but in the good line her hip rolled straight back so that the crease was only in her bottom rather than the back

It's all very well for you to write "Disclaimer: Please only perform these moves under the instruction of a ballet instructor. Consult a doctor before beginning ballet or any exercise program." but when I did consult the doctor he fell about laughing and said I'd better not go anywhere near it and I ended up leaving with the usual prescription for aspirin anyway and the usual seventy pound bill.

That was AWESOME, everything from the scenery to the costumes was just perfect and it looks super fun! The thing I like the most though is that it doesn't really look much like a ballet but a musical instead, because of all those costumes and the way the characters act and that is just so new and refreshing to me! You are all so talented, I applaude you :)

Ugh, I've watched this video so many times, and while I understand it in theory, I just can't make my body do that. No matter what I do, I always end up getting a crease in my back. It's so frustrating!
