How to Build a Kegerator - Turn an old fridge Into a ‘Keezer’
In this video I will be walking you through how to convert an old refrigerator into a home draught beer system aka a kegerator. Whether you home brew and want to use Cornelius kegs (‘corny kegs’) or you don’t homebrew and want to use commercial sankey kegs, this video will show you the basics of how to turn an old appliance into a beer dispense dream. Just a few beer taps! A CO2 cylinder and some beer line and you’re away! The build that I will feature here uses a tall ‘larder fridge’ rather than the more common chest freezer approach. This type of conversion doesn’t require an external temperature controller (ink bird) nor does it require you to make a wooden collar (as with a ‘keezer’)....

A low-dairy beer-based beverage! In this episode I am once again letting ‘the man’ (Beer52) choose my drink as I slurp-up the creatively named ‘Salted Caramel Shake’. This say-it-like-it-is salted caramel IPA is brought to you by Melobourne’s finest (read: ‘oldest’) 3 Ravens Brewery. It packs in a healthy 6% ABV and a modest 10 IBU but don’t let that fool you, as this beer has an extremely well...

Brettanomyces meets Roald Dahl: ‘Matilda’ Belgian-Style Pale Ale Beer Review

What IS Belgian Style? Today I am walzing with Matilda, the Belgian-style pale ale from Goose Island Brew Co. This boldly-Bretted Beer boasts 7% ABV, 26 IBU, a colour that I’m SURE is made up and MOST importantly: low-no Brettanomyces character! ‘Black Eagle’ Beer Review: Beers of the British Aisles
You've never eaten oatmeal?!
Light gold color. White foam, small, quickly falling to a ring. Citrus, light resin, grass, herbal notes in the background, interesting hop bitterness on the finish.
I remember this at 12%. Can you get it anywhere at this strength? 7.5% is NOT “very strong beer”. 12% is.
This was a very popular beer 60 years ago in London Pubs & would quite often be paired with mild. It was the very 1st beer I ever had my dad would bring me back a bottle when he went down to the pub on a Sunday lunchtime.
bitter and barley!
Do you make a priming solution?
Hi Martin, yes I suggest making a solution and ‘batch’ priming. This needs more ‘buckets’ but it’s MUCH easier and reliable than individually priming each bottle. 4-5g sugar per bottle dissolved in roughly the same amount of (hot) water and add the whole thing to the ‘racked’ beer. Stir. Bottle. Done!
I'm late to the party - but when you insert the tap, do you push the plastic piece in the middle of the rubber sealing down into the keg? Or do you remove it somehow before?
Hello! I always push. If you remove it then you’ll let a lot of the gas out and probably foam the beer. I always use the grey type bungs with the easy push plastic piece in the middle. There is a way you can do it with the black and red bungs too but I’m not entirely sure how to
Used to get half a pint of Guiness in a pint glass then mix with a bottle of 10% Gold label. Lovely drink . Lethal but really nice . This the late 80s
And now I’m going to have to try that too! Thanks for the tip
Thanks! Great tutorial!
Absolutely loved this video. No bull just really straight forward mate. Subscribed
I'm a complete home-brew noob and this is exactly what I needed to see. Thank you!
Great video! Ive just bought a few kegs to move away from the misery of bottling. Have you got a link for the valve plug and pump you use! Thanks 👍
Hi Jim, thanks for sharing this cost effective way of bottling - just about to start kegging so this was really very useful. Great stuff! Dave
Just starting my kegging journey and found your video - great stuff and super helpful. This has taken a lot of the mystery out of getting a kegerator setup and connected. Is the tap still working OK?. Thanks
Hello! Yes, the taps still work great thanks. I actually ended up consolidating into a large chest freezer type set up when I renovated the ‘monochrome mancave’. Stuff has got super expensive but I can tell you a few things I learned from that: 1) buy way too much tubing and buy your John guests at the same time 2) you can get ‘low profile’ disconnects nowadays for roughly the same price as the standard black and grey ones. They’re absolutely worth it because they screw apart rather than needing a screw driver 3) Ali express is a pretty good source for quality and cheap taps and gas manifolds but it will take some time to arrive. I can’t remember what my tubing set up was at the end of this video but I’d also advise you not to make it super neat and tidy until you’re happy with the flow. I think I put a decent amount of effort into making it all neat and tucked away and then ended up cutting a few of them short and screwing myself. Good luck with the kegging and let me know how it turns out
So you need to do them all again with hops😂
Sorry, late to the party here. Is the batch priming thing legitimately an option? How do you make sure it mixes in properly and consistently without disturbing the sediment? This just blew my mind, but I'm cautious!
Don't worry. Just watched the rest of the video. Lol. I'm an idiot.
Cheers Marcus! Yeah batch priming is a game changer, saves time and also massively reduces the possibility of bottle bombs. Let me know how you get on with it!
80p a can? Where i get it from it's like £1.40 a can 3 years and the price has nearly doubled. ouch inflation.
Great Videos, I've had some problems with bungs leaking CO2 when carbonating with Keg, is there a way to help with sealing the the bungs
We used to get this on draught in the winter. They served it in what they called a 'pony'. As young fellas we drank it in pints. 3 was the max. before you did foolish things. I did foolish things. The very smell of it after getting pissed on it put you off. The pub was the Gardners Arms Wythenshawe UK
Thanks mate, I'll take two party kegs to a Bachelor's Party. It's the first time I use them so I hope I don't mess it up 😬
I have had some of this beer. And I like it quite. Most often if a beer is so strong. I usually think the taste of alcohol taste take over to much. But not with the faxe 10%. So I like it and would say it is worth trying out. They only sell this in the one litre can at my place. So after drinking one of these you will feel it. It goes straight to your head,
Honestly, this is an absolutely amazing beer. Super fruity taste, a little bitter, a little spicy, and very sweet and fruity which is typical for Faxe. I'd say this beer is literally just double the strength in taste and alcohol as Faxe's regular lager is. The taste is so similar, it tastes literally the same, just stronger.
As a German, I can tell you that specifically seeing Faxe 10%, Faxe's Red Erik and their regular Lager is very, very common here. In fact I'd consider all 3 of them to be among my favorite beers because they're all great.

Where did you get the grey bung to put the tap on the keg? I cannot find them on the website
Hi! I've got a maybe stupid question. I have this party star deluxe system too and I'm wondering, if I can leave the those CO2 cartridges on with the regulator set to 0?
Do you have a link for the beer protector pump
Hi Robert! I’ve been asked this SO many times and unfortunately I can’t find any sources. I bought a couple of these maybe 5 years ago and the brew shop I got them from has since gone out of business. To be honest though, the party taps are a little more expensive but MUCH better at preserving and serving your beer. I have another video on these
@@dr.tanknstein7590 thanks I have opted to order the tap
Great video. just kegged these for the first time. how long do you leave them before putting in fridge and enjoying?
My gas housing has a hole in it
Is that a problem?
@@dr.tanknstein7590 i think so, does yours have a hole, if so maybe its ok, i think gas is escaping from there
Right, I think I see what you mean now. The actual plastic casing that holds the gas bulb? This SHOULD have a hole in the bottom to prevent it getting stuck/cracking when the bulb cools down during use. The bulb should be screwed tight enough in to the main tap such that the casing isn’t really doing anything other than preventing you from touching the gas bulb
@@dr.tanknstein7590 cool cheers il try again
I think they use wine yeast instead of beer yeast that's how they get the abv without adding extra alcohol because normal beer yeast caps out about 6%.
Ashi (that dry Japanese beer I can't spell) does a 2 and 3l can and no your Danish friend was just having you on😂
This is my favourite. Hard to find an ale to compare really.
Not very clear on how your boiling the grains at the begging….
I microwaved them for a few minutes each. The point of this was to generate hot break material that I could remove and to keep the testing consistent as I had to boil to beer that had hops in it to isomerise the alpha acids
I’m gunna stick porridge in my beer from now
Almost every one of my beers has porridge in it!
Is there anything you can add afterwards to help with head retention?
There are some hop extracts that may work but by-and-large I would avoid adding stuff to your beer post fermentation as yeast tend to keep everything in check. I would say if your beer doesn’t have very good head retention, make sure your glassware is SQUEAKY clean and give it a good aggressive pour into the glass
@@dr.tanknstein7590 added hop tincture and it did the job thanks a bunch mate 👍
Really interesting video... Thankyou for creating it!!
I drank spirits straight dark rum, vodka and bourbon no problem when I drank, so don't think this would be a problem
Give it a go man, let me know how it goes!
Does the 8g fit in the same holder with the party star? Mine came with 16g
Yeah I believe that these are 16 only. The reason is that it has to be a pretty snug fit into the housing to stop it from leaking
I am UK based. Any recommendation on a fridge that can fit 4x 19L cornys, or at minimum 3x 19L? Thanks
I had a bottle of Old Tom Ale in San Antonio, TX and it was simply the best beer I ever had. I bought a bottle at the HEB on Potranco Rd. and 1604. How I wish it was still sold. I give it a big 10.
It really is one of the best beers out there. And pretty unique at the price point too. In the UK it costs ~£1.25 a bottle
It's pronounced peculiar, so as you would expect. It's also from Masham, which isn't really a posh part of N. Yorkshire, very much a farming and working class background. The Theakston family sold out to S&N for many years, but bought back there shares in 2003 and have been independent since
Nice no one ever talks about the pain in the ass to put in or take out kegs lol. It’s a pain to even bed and reach to clean beer lines as well. Look to build a Kezzer now. Let’s get back to brewing!!
Hahaha yeah getting beer in and out is bad. Especially if you’re like me and you buy all your kegs preloved from all over the place and they don’t match!
I thought kegging was out of my reach for a while also but found a deal on market place and was kegging for $60. Luckily co2 is cheap for me at $32 for a 20lb tank exchange. Every time I see corney kegs in decent shape for $40 or less they come home with me.
Me too! I think they’re a little more expensive here in the uk but if I see one for less than £50 then I usually add it to my collection
You could technically use these products to force carbonate your beer.
Yeah, I think if you read down the thread a few people have tried this. I never have but I think it would be a great idea if it worked out. I just haven’t got space in the fridge
Great video mate, where can you get the grey caps and accessories now please. Sold out on Amazon and couldn’t find on fass Frisch. Subscribed and liked 👍🏻😉
Hi Calvin, thanks for watching! Unfortunately, I’ve just found out that the place I usually recommend for these has shut down! I would maybe try your local homebrew shop (if you have one) or you can buy kegs with the bung here: brew2bottle.co.uk/products/5ltr-mini-keg-rubber-plug?currency=GBP&Google%20Shopping&gclid=CjwKCAiAlfqOBhAeEiwAYi43F4wYYXWOtMVrE5P0p8uBar5E4t7rj6gYNTQqZrwIqyWM3gfUZfUqhhoCkU0QAvD_BwE
Nice side-by-side comparison. It's the same idea as terroir for wine grapes - the same varietal of grape can taste very different, e.g. a South Australian shiraz vs. a Northern Rhone syrah.
Great video I’m looking to try this tap myself would you be able to tell me the total height of keg with the tap fitted, would like to know it would fit in my fridge before I buy cheers.
Great video and very practical. I'm currently looking into a DIY kegerator myself and this is really a great 101 how-to video. Thanks!
Thanks for the comment. I’m really glad you found it useful. I don’t usually do this but I am so impressed with the taps and manifold that I got off Amazon, I really suggest if you haven’t already got those bits using the links in the description to source these. Are planning a refrigerator or a freezer conversion?
@@dr.tanknstein7590 Completed a refrigerator set up. I didn't use the calculations for the hose length but got myself faucets with flow control to avoid foaming. Still, very happy with my set up and my 2 taps kegerator.
