Library of "The Mixtape with Scott", which is an oral history of the last 50 years of economics through the personal stories of economists I interview. I usually select certain themes and then do interviews with people to fill out those themes, such as "econometrics and causal inference", "Gary Becker's students", "economists in tech", and "public policy". Most people fit in those four categories.

Welcome to this week’s episode of the Mixtape with Scott! Episode 9, season 4. And I just did the math, and we are at 113 episodes so far since I started. What a fun journey it’s been too. So many interesting people, so many interesting stories, so much fun to connect with them and be, for just one hour, getting to hear them all.
For those new to the podcast, this is a podcast about the personal stories of living economists where I listen to them share parts of the arc of their journey. Primarily as their life moving towards being an economist and having been one. It moves between the personal and professional in whatever way feels right at the moment. And this week’s guest is Francine Bl...

Saudações de um humilde estudante do mestrado em economia da UFPEL
Great interview! Loved the Small Worlds cover used for the intro, but I can't figure out who it is. Anyone know the recording?
That’s my two nephews.
@@scunning Nice! They sound great!
Very interesting talk by Jann. Thanks Scott for your work!
Glad you liked it! I liked this one a lot too.
You are amazing prof Cunningham, great work. Always learning from your Twitter
I appreciate that, thanks!
I did my B. Sc. at Sharif university of technolgy but in computer eingeering department (CE grad 2007). What a dynamic environment filled with bright minds it was .. Nice interview. Took me back to Sharif, to those student days and the orange bricks of the college campus. Thanks for posting the interview Scott, and thanks to Mohammad for sharing his story. Cheers from Hamburg.
So glad you found this a trip down memory lane. I loved being in this interview with Mohammad.
Absolutely incredible story. Served on the CEA after undergraduate, completed his PhD in 2 years, was awarded full tenure in 2 years at no less than Harvard University, and has written several textbooks that have been used by millions.
I know - real rags to riches story.
Wilson Sarah Clark Christopher Martinez Patricia
"The world is second best at best" (This is the one line of Prof. Dixit's that gets quoted most often!)
Prof. Dixit's sage advice to all academicians: "Maintain a youthful sense of freedom to choose problems and the directions of work on them. Imagine yourself at twenty-three, not yet labeled or confined to a particular "field," and not yet pressured to produce something quickly for the approaching tenure review. Try to preserve this mental frame in your research, even as your body... continue(s) to age and decay." ["My System of Work (Not!)" -- The American Economist, Spring 1994] "Don't give too much weight to the social importance of the issue; instead, do what captures your intellectual interest and creative imagination. This is not to deny the importance of paying attention to the real world... But I do believe that mere relevance of an issue will not guarantee good research unless you have a genuine drive to work on it. If not, leave it to someone else. Good work on an apparently unimportant problem will have more long-run value than mediocre work on one of greater intrinsic importance."
Retired after such a career, he lights up when talking about what he is working on now!
👏👏👏👏
Scott. Great stuff. Please consider getting an opposing viewpoint on causal inference from the macro side like Tom Sargent and Christopher Sims.
That maybe could come down the road. I don’t mind doing it but I’m still trying to build out this social map of the various groups I’m focused on. I may reach out to angus deaton given the focus has been abt Princeton
Algorithmic fairness introduces propaganda.
Wonderful conversation!
Thank you for this interview with Professor Alan Manning. I am currently working towards applying to LSE to be considered for a PhD program. For me, this is particularly special because Professor Manning has significantly influenced the area of economics that I am most passionate about
🤣 *Promo SM*
Thanks for the effort and inspiration Scott. I enjoy your content each morning over a coffee before I start working.
Useless humans
What is the paper from KU Leuven he is referring to at 55:00?
I can't seem to figure it out either.
loved this, any chance you could get Tim Bollerslev or Torben Andersen on? would love to hear from more time series people
Let me add them to the list. I don't have any time series econometricians in the mix so that's a good idea.
@@scunning Great, looking forward to it! :)
He seems like a chill guy
For every complement like this, I'm going to send him two texts saying he's a loser.
Great interview! Cristine is an inspiring professor and researcher!
She's amazing!
Great video!
Oh great! So glad you liked it! It was great having him on the show.

Wow Prof. Hahn had such a wonderful group of mentors, it was a very nice interview thanks! Ps. @Scott Cunningham is the intro song available somewhere? I would love to stream it
It is unfortunately not. But I'll see if I can get him to put it on Spotify.
Great interview. I had Jin for a semester of econometrics during his brief stay at Michigan. Thoroughly enjoyed his course and teaching style.
I loved this interview too. Was really not expecting half of what happened too.
👎💪☝️🤍🦁🇧🇦🎯🚀🚔
Great interview. Guy looks kind of like Russell Crowe.
I loved this interview too.
@@scunning No comment on the other point?
Your explanations are spot on
He is a great econometrician. I learnt postgraduate econometrics and application of matrices from him, through his books. He is an inspiration to many of us.
He's so great. This was a fun one too.
Thanks for the correct Bible
Chuck Huber's cousin
Thanks for your super nice intro, Scott, and for having me on the pocast! JG
Any time!
John is such a great professor. I remember when he decided to go to Law school after having tenure, or maybe it was before? I don't remember now. But I remember that I thought, well, John G. can do anything! Super smart, down to earth person. Public Economics was so much fun than I expected. My biggest appreciation to his work and his way of teaching. I am glad he is in your series. 🎉
Thank you!
Great get, Scott! Ive been interested to hear from Nick. He may not be an economist, but he has made a lot of economics work possible.
Boom!
Probably the first interview ever that I listened to with utmost interest and no interruption. Bill is a brilliant and generous econometrician who has helped so many people throughout the world. Thanks a lot for this interview, Scott.
So glad you liked it! I loved this interview too.
This was very meaningful, thank you!
Wonderful interview!
I owe much to the goodness of people like Joe Price.
He's the grease that keeps the engines running in this profession on many many levels in many many explicit and not so explicit and easy to see ways.
What articles is David referring to here 1:29:30 ?
I think it's referring to Autor, Dorn and Hanson's work on China. It's outside my wheelhouse, so I'm not 100%. www.econlib.org/archives/2016/02/autor_dorn_and.html

It would be highly beneficial to have timestamps on the videos. For example each timestamp for question, harder would be to have one for a topic. Regards.
Hm. That seems like a lot of work, but someone has done it for some of these I noticed. I will look into how it's done. Thanks for the suggestion.
Hello Scott! Ty for your video. I'm interested on the workshop you mentioned with Abadie, could you please send me more information about it?
I'm so sorry! I apologize I never check this. It was here. github.com/Mixtape-Sessions/Synthetic-Control-and-Clustering/
Can I find this song somewhere on spotify or is it Mixtape exclusive (Shazaam can't find anything)? Thanks for all your great work!
I hired a friend to write it for me. I don't think it's out there.
Please stop saying the guest's name and then asking them to say their name.
It's so nice to have chapters.
I have recently been graduated of a Master in Econometrics in France. I have been passionate about econometrics throughout my education. Today, your book (The Mixtape) helps me a lot to deepen my knowledge in terms of causal inferences. Having the opportunity to hear, and try to understand how these geniuses of econometrics think through your wonderful interviews, it's just a priceless chance that you offer us, thank you very much
So glad you like it!
