Double Clave Semi-Linear Groove Breakdown (3 Minute Video)
Просмотров 1222 года назад
Here's a "Double Clave" groove for you. I first saw Nancy Luduena do something with 2 Clave's at once, and got inspired recently to turn the concept in to a semi-linear groove with some spicy bits here and there. It includes a 3:2 Clave on the hihats, and 2:3 on the bass drum. Then there are filled in ghosts, and accents on snare, and a cheeky open hat on the 1. It's all broken down in the vide...

Linear Drumming - Gary Chaffee Stickings Over 3/4 Demo
Просмотров 2463 года назад
Linear drumming used to confuse me... It seemed like some kind of magic until I learned about solo cells. I submitted this on the weekend for a course I am going through with Henrique de Almeida, called Polyrhythmic Possibilities. It is 4 bars of 3/4 Linear time feel, with 4 bars of combinations of 5a Stickings from Gary Chaffee with 2's - e.g RLLRR LRRLL RL - this makes 12 notes (a bar of 16th...

Man your approach is so good. I’m having problems with ghost notes landing quietly and smooth after a good back beat. Toto Rosanna sounds horrible after I land the Back beat landing the ghost note on the snare doesn’t sound smooth enough
Thanks Craig. This is a common issue you are facing. I could do a little video on this. But if you are open to it, I'd be happy to get you in for a free 30 minute session and I'll show you exactly how to solve that with around 5 practise sessions of 20 mins.
best video for push pull thanks matt
Thanks, exactly what I wanted.❤😂
Awesome!
Thanks for breaking this down. I'm guilty of improper hand technique.
Doubles cheatsheet

Doubles chest sheet, please. Fantastic explanation, thank you!
You bet. Drop me a quick email at matt@infinitydrumming.com and I'll get that doubles cheat sheet over to you.
Matt is my Mentor and I can honestly say his lessons have been an absolute game changer for me! I've been playing for 10+ years and always struggled with accuracy and speed around the kit and since working with him on a 1-1 basis my playing has come on leaps and bounds! Keep up the good work dude this lesson is awesome!!!! Love ya Broski! (It's Tony btw 😂)
I love how you used that Ted Reed exercise for developing doubles.
Also, you are right... That exaggerated drop catch thing always seemed a little goofy to me.
Glad you found it helpful. 😁 Happy drumming 🥁
I have another Ted Reed variation coming soon btw
This is really helpful. I'm teaching a student right now who is getting confused with that usual way of approach. I'm going to try this with her at the next lesson! Oh, and could I get that doubles cheat sheet?
You bet. Drop me a quick email at matt@infinitydrumming.com and I'll get that doubles Cheat sheet over to you.
You have phenomenal skill and teaching ability! This lesson connected with me. I look forward to seeing what else you demonstrate, definitely subscribed. Thank you
Thanks for subscribing and for the kind words. Glad you found ilthe lesson helpful!
This is ace. Could i have the doubles cheat sheet please? Thanks
You bet. Drop me a quick email at matt@infinitydrumming.com and I'll get that doubles cheat sheet over to you.
I have done all the damn practice techniques but I can't break the barrier of doing it fast .what the hell am I doing wrong
I understand your frustration. The two things that help are focusing on perfecting your motion slow and spending 5 mins every day going slow to fast and doing sprints and jogs. Additionally bursting with subdivisions helps a ton. I will do a video on this soon here. But if you want further help, reach out to me at matt@infinitydrumming.com
Great video Matt 👏😎🥁
Thanks Ali! 🙏
My doubles , paradiddles, padaflafla as well. Again only traditional
Pataflaflas are great fun!
I'm a traditional grip drummer for years since 1962 so I'm 70
Great vid. Cheat sheet please.

This is the the exact video I was looking for,I really struggle getting speed with the push pull, I'm way too robotic, thanks Matt!!!
Glad it helped! Hit me up at matt@infinitydrumming.com for a feedback video on your doubles.
1st off I play traditional grip with the left hand. I have a good double stroke roll. Clean and even. My problem with doing the push pull is I cant seem to get the speed I would like.
Thanks for sharing! I can do a video on speed development in the future. Or if you want to chat with me directly about this... Drop me an email at matt@infinitydrumming.com
Doubles cheat sheet. Thanks for the lesson!

Doubles cheat sheet. Great lesson!
Sure thing. Drop me a quick email at matt@infinitydrumming.com and I'll get that doubles cheat sheet over to you.
I feel like some teachers create the 'point to the ceiling' style methods just so they can push out another video. This however was bullshit free and to the point. Thanks
Glad it helped you out. Keep an eye out, I have a few more of these techique simplifiers coming soon.
The purpose for learning the Free/Full stroke is to allow the student to understand the full rotation... the "plain" if you will, of the stick. The 4 basic strokes need to be understood and practiced slowly so that one can understand the physics and feel them in the hands. Similar to the double strokes where you pull the second double out. Joe Morello's book Master Studies I addresses these issues and strokes. It's not the whole equation but it's an important one.

I like how you’re starting and emphasizing the L.H. What rate are you playing the 5C? 1/16th Triplets or quintuplets? @Jcushon

I'll do that! Thanks a lot mate
Great video - I’d call your attention to 7:37, where your hand looks pretty much the way I strive to make mine look when I’m doing doubles. I don’t draw a distinction between doubles and drop catch at the beginning, because I think it’s about energy management. But I would give students the very advice you caution against at the beginning as a means to get their hands doing what yours are at 7:37. With all due respect, it looks like you’re dropping the wrist below the axis of the forearm - which is no criticism because I think this is a Good thing - because your hand can feel how much energy is needed to put into the stick to get an even bounce back. I agree that once you’re specifically working on doubles as independent from push pull, you need less energy, so the “drop” wrist motion can be more attenuated. The other difference in our approach is I don’t emphasize fingers at all, because one of my first teachers over emphasized fingers and that caused me to “force” the stroke by pinching it, instead of working with the energy of the stick. I’ve seen many students get caught in similar quagmires, and I wonder if simply practicing singles is an easier way to get students to incorporate the fingers without overemphasizing them. I like the approach you do leading up to 7:37, and the sound you get with your doubles, so I think it’s just about different coaching cues getting out students to a similar place.
I learned this and didn’t realize I was doing it. Accenting the second note of doubles just sounds so good 👍🏼
Subbed
Thankyou! 🙏 Lemme know what kind of topics you want to see lessons on in the future here.
Doubles cheat sheet

Wow! I think its the best push pull technique video i've seen
Too wordy
Just discovered Matt. Sometimes the algorithm is my ally. Great lesson. Definitely a new sub.
Awesome, thank you! Glad youtube brought this to you. Let me know how you get on at matt@infinitydrumming.com of you want.
Hi Matt, great video. I'm very interested in the 'double whip' technique you mentioned. Did you already make the video you hinted on?
I didn't yet... But that is something I will go over in a future video for sure.
Doubles cheat sheet? Yes please!
You are welcome to it. Drop me a quick email at matt@infinitydrumming.com and I'll get that doubles cheat sheet over to you.
Doubles cheat sheet
Of course. Drop me a quick email at matt@infinitydrumming.com and I'll get that doubles cheat sheet over to you.
Selling Moeller as a new thing..😂😂
Not at all. I teach that you need Moeller to do it. However, the double whip has a specific emphasis on the second stroke not present in the classic Moeller motion.
Matt, that was great and a much better way to explain and teach the double stroke roll. You need to post more content. I’ve always struggled to get a double as clean as you have it down. So I’ll work on this lesson. A double cheat sheet you say? I’d be interested in that. And maybe, break down that double stroke solo you did at the ending. Basically the transition from the roll to the toms and back again so smoothly. 👍
Thanks for the kind words. Happy to send you over the cheat sheet and do a personalised video breaking down how to build up your orchestrations. Drop me a quick email at matt@infinitydrumming.com and I'll get that doubles cheat sheet over to you.
Hi Matt can I get the doubles cheat sheet? Phil
Of course. Drop me a quick email at matt@infinitydrumming.com and I'll get that doubles cheat sheet over to you.
Inspiring and great lesson. Wow. I’ve still got my syncopation book my dad bought me in the early 70’s. Same book as yours. My teacher then had me doing some exercises which may have limited my learning. Like , holding coins against the stick with my fingers. To make sure my grip was always firm. I always used heavy 5C sticks. Now having better success with lighter sticks. Just need to unlearn my bad grip habit . Thanks man
There are alot of methods that can actually make things harder rather than easier. It's important to stay as loose as possible with the grip while maintaining accurate control of the direction the stick. One cool tip, on those days you find your hand are dry or cold, use Mr Zogg's stick wax to create some tackiness, so you don't have to grip the sticks too hard to maintain control. 😁
Superb explanation... 👍👍👍
Glad you liked it
