What all Americans should ask in the face of the deadly attack by Hamas: how safe is Israel? Can it be called a "safe haven," realistically? That was the right approach, I think. This is why if I were to convert to Judaism, I'd be a Classical Reform Jew and a member of the American Council for Judaism. I hope that someday in the distant future, Theodore Herzl's ideas will be about as popular among Jewish Americans as Marcus Garvey's are among African Americans--which is to say, not popular at all.

Highlighting the loss of jewish communities, I understand this. As we are Jewish. We represent and defend this. No loss of life can be justified or minimized. Us vs them mentality will not fix this. That’s a terrorist game. A game none of us want to take part in. Encouraging a religious population to speak like this is a slippery slope. Humanity, as a jewish woman, as a human over violence. That is the only conversation. My empathy was not triggered by violence in the name of my religion. My humanity recognizes all the wars across the world started far before our existence fueled by the same divides. Mostly religion. I sit here and think about the lives lost for reasons of conflict constructed before my existence. Before the existence of most casualties whether in Israel or Gaza. I think of why these issues are still present. Us vs them mentality will never solve crisis. Humanity over violence and destruction is the conversation I want to have. Because I’m Jewish. Because I’m empathetic. Because I know the intent of these terrorists may be to eradicate the Jewish population, but the present destruction spans far wider than our population. Eliminate the Us vs them mentality. Promote the teachings of Judaism and the impacts of empathy outside how we align or identify genetically, religiously, and geographically. Compassion has no boarders.
