To Anacreon In Heaven (acapella)
Просмотров 80 тыс.12 лет назад
An old recording of the Anacreotic song I've had lying around on my drive. Please tell me if you know who the singers are! Also, I have the sheet music for this if anyone is interested!
I pray that this becomes the official anthem of the U.S.
Agreed. It’s unanimous!
I don't know why, but this song is flippin' hilarious to me, no matter who sings it. I died when they yelled play ball because every time I hear this song, that's what I want to do.
LOOOLLL SO I'VE BEEN SINGING A DRINKING SONG EVERY MORNING IN CLASS SINCE KINDERGARTEN!?! LOOOOLLL!
Is it possible to send me the sheet music for this you wrote up?
It's on Wikipedia
Why is there an American flag? This song is british
I'm going to record a version of the national anthem with the lyrics.
It seems a little ironic that Americas national anthem' tune was taken from a British drinking song. At a time when we hated and were at war with each other.
Americans at the time were British
@@AiGeneratedWaluigithis was used after the war of 1812, so we didn't fight with the british after that. We were independent and beyond disputes at that point.
🏴🍻
JoeBlDEN?🙄
Are there any other recordings of this group available?
Wonder how it feels for Americans knowing that “their” national anthem was copied of a drinking song made by drunk Englishmen in a pub😁🏴🍻
Actually I'm fine with it, the original poem was still original.
@@JackHawk-re5vo English
The anthem itself was written by Francis Scott Key, but was set to music by John Stafford Smith some time later. The poem by Scott Key itself is original, though the music isn't. Despite this I'm fine with this song being used as the music. In my opinion it seems fitting that a former British colony uses a British tune in its national anthem, and pretty funny that a drinking tune of all things was chosen.
@@JackHawk-re5vo fair enough🇬🇧🇺🇸
I literally don't care.
Tbh, I don't really care if our anthem is based off this. I mean, America was British before. Plus, the British National Anthem was also taken from a French song.
America was not British when the American national anthem was written. It was during the War Of 1812 that the song was written.
@@aelrickofoid6733 Yeah I know this
@@aelrickofoid6733 The young US's first real defeat. No objectives achieved, and the capital city sacked and burnt.
May I just point out that this is an English Drinking song...
This sounds exactly like the Star Spangled Banner! Is Star Spangled Banner based off this song? :o
Yes, Francis Scott Key wrote the lyrics to the Star Stangled Banner with the melody of this song in mind. The melody of the song would have been well known throughout pubs/taverns in America at the time since it was written around 1760 in Britain, and who doesn't like a good song about drinking booze and having sex?
@@zqfmgb123 That's pretty cool!
We also co-opted "God Save The King/Queen" for "My Country 'Tis Of Thee" so nothing new.
I'll drink to that. 🍺

Yo, sick tune. Somebody should Vanilla Ice that shit.
The United Drinking States of America
Americans don’t even know how to drink😂
Is he like the other king from Antigone? Maybe you can summon him if you eat all his harmony.
I will gladly and gratefully take the sheet music if it's available!
I love the "PLAY BALL!!!” at the end!
I thought they said play ball. Lol.
I can't believe our anthem a fucking drinking club song
🇺🇸v.s.🇬🇧 FIGHT
This rendition was used by Proctor and Bergman of Firesign Theater for an expose of the Star Spangled Etc. Negativland then produced a hysterical mashup that included this track for their album "Free", it's just called "Our National Anthem." The video is at v=9c61yn4jIos on youtube.
Great harmony!! 😰
wrong flag
what?
The UK and USA are not disparate according to history.
Carly Steffen the language spoken is lol jokes bit of humour or humor my transatlantic neighbour or neighbor
Dave: Was just going to write that! Glad you got here first!
There are so many versions of the Anacreotic song on RUclips, this is the most authentic version I've heard! Thanks!
One of the versions is our anthem.
Heard on the Negativland piece "Our National Anthem" from the album Free (1993)
Is allegiance still played cause i just joines and no-one on servers
I would love to see the sheet music for this if you still have it!
Wait, we were secretly singing a BRITISH DRINKING SONG?! My whole world is upside down!
Are you australian?
Our country tis of thee is the same as god save the queen (british national anthem)
derpbear ...which is the same as Grand dieu sauve le roi (French God save the King)
@@derpbear1237 And the national anthem of Litchinstein.
No you are not singing a traditional English drinking song - you are only using the tune. Maybe you could sing and harmonise The Star Spangled Banner as the first rendition. So much better than the usually awful wittering and wailing of the usual soloists. Only Whitney Houston could get away singing round the actual tune
Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there. O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
So a fun song about friendship, love, and wine is turned into a bloodsoaked anthem of war. Can't get more American than that.

Serai3- that would be fantastic! Deeply appreciated. And nice to hear Anacreon again- especially today!
Dave Swan + I have been craving some vintage OAT music back in my life. My records are gone and wondered if there was anyone out there that might digitize OUT ON A LIMB and SOWING WILD OATS? It would be a pleasure to re-enjoy these recordings and memories of the faire.
I believe I have a audiocassette tape with some of the songs on it. Will try and see if I can pull them off that. :)
I'd like the sheet music if you have it.
It's one of the most sung melodies on earth. You can find it.
+mixmastermind I meant of this arrangement. I know the melody.
This song is British so why is there an American flag there?
Not this 'song'; just the melody.
FengLong Technically the song as well since it was the anthem of the Anacreontic society which was a private drinking society for the wealthy of London during the 18th century
England has its many connections with the USA.
I was kinda hoping that the US national anthem had its own original tune. (sigh)
The poem is ours, at least.
Yes, but isn't it ironically perfect that it doesn't?
How ironic, intellectual property stolen from a common english pub song. I guess the early US was like the China of its day.
What is so hard to understand about the fact that the thirteen colonies were british?
@@ghrtfhfgdfnfg just because the original 13 were British doesn’t mean they have to copy a song
How fun to find this on July 4 2015. We loved going to the old Freight and Salvage back when OAT would perform and we could sing and drink along. Of course not to excess. Though they held the record for the most beer sold of an evening
J/K
Man, they bit this from the National Anthem Bruh Bruh, yo son, this aint be original B
You're are exactly wrong. THIS is the original song. Francis Scott Key used the tune and made up new lyrics for the anthem. BUSTED FOR IGNORANCE.
Serai3 it was called Sarcasm.. Lighten up Genius
Serai3 also do you really think a Human being would speak like that? SMDH
* eyeroll * Jesus, third-graders don't use such a lame defense. What a fucking idiot.
THIS is the original, and friend, you seem only vaguely literate with this post. Might want to do some research before you put it out on the web.
Please can you send e mail the sheet music to me? caspar81 [a] gmail <.> com
This is, indeed Oak Ash & Thorn. One of the voices is mine. This was recorded at the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley in the early 1980's. We appeared as a four man trio in those days. Dale Hill, Doug Olsen, Mitchell Sandler, Dave Swan
Cool, nicely sung! I tried to write down the arrangement as close as i could and sang it with some friends some years ago.
+Dave Swan since there are 6 verses to the song. how did the group decide which 2 to use?
Are you guys still together? Are you ever going to get your hinies down to the SoCal to sing for us?
OAT is in hibernation/abeyance right now. Our recordings are available on the website oakashthorn dot com. Including a recent compilation 2-CD set called Oak Ash & Thorn: Forty Years On.
I wish there was another option besides PayPal... O.o and I want them all! And the songbook!
This is a version recorded by a group called Oak, Ash & Thorn. The members are Dave Swan, Doug Olsen, Tom Wagner, and sometimes Dale Hill and Mitchell Sandler? Where's the mugs of beer?
Wine, not beer.
I really loved hearing this song, than you for posting on you tube.
