Made this video in hopes to give people insight on what they will be getting themselves into with either of these engines. I based this video on the most readily available engines that you can make power with straight out of the wrecking yard. The reason I am not comparing the big block to the 6.0 is it is a considerably more difficult engine to find at a wrecking yard and I didn't want to comp...

The Truth About Flat Tappet Camshafts
Thank you I learned a lot!
I want my car to sound like the best autistic choir of amputee deaf children trying to clap on beat
I've got turbos on a stock crank stock rod with basic .030 over trw forged pistons 509 2 bolt block. No heating issues.
454. It already makes gobs of torque, to easy to make more out of it.
There's a reason why they call them the steam engine. Start with a 350 you get more bang for your buck. A motor that lasts.
The QUICKEST car i ever rode in was a 67 Nova with a 327/365
It was in the chevelle /malibu special
I have a friend who passed away and his wife is selling his motors, one is tagged as a 30 over Small journal, it has a steel crank and 11 to 1 small domed pistons. It is $500, I have 202 heads to put on it because the motor doesn’t come with heads. I bought another motor there and was in good shape. So I’m wondering if I should get this one as well. What would you do? Buy it or Pass? As you said, they’re not to available these days.
😂😂
They are good but never get big enough valves to really make big numbers
If you increase the spring pressure and or the rocker ratio, which we do in any kind of hi-performance the flat cam will be short lived. Roller cams are expensive but you only have to wipe out one flat cam and the expense and time go up 5 fold to rebuild the engine.
This engine makes a very good boat anchor ⚓. The Ford 400 also. Blown head gaskets and overheating are this engines m.o . That is WHY people build a 383 out of a 350 with a 400 crank. This Youngster has no idea what he talking about .
400 SBC CAST iron rank ----- just say NO !. Get a 1182 forged Chevy crank out of a 1970 LT-1. Then get a 2 bolt main 350 block and drill it for Summit spade caps & aline bore the mains with ARP studs. You can with the 1182 steel crank twist it up to 8,000+ rpm with solid lifters and use a much more radical solid cam with Trick Flow .205 heads and a old school Victor jr. intake and it will out preform the 400 cast crank motor all day long. Most people are bitchin about ever spending a dime on any 400 there that bad.
We used to make a girdle to tie the center main caps together on a 327. There was also a truck head with the big intake valves, it had a larger combustion chamber. (65cc - 70cc ?) Not the camel hump it had a marking something like this ( /I ) not this ( /\ ). I love the sound of a 327 at 9000 RPM. On the street, in1st gear and moving, ease the throttle to 6000 rpm then punch it and smoke the tires.
What supercharger is that? I need that for my 99 k2500 454
Honorable mention, the GM 637 cubic inch V8 from 1966-1972 for large trucks and busses
We were building 302 cu-inn motors cfor gassers since the 1950’s! First with 265 truck blocks. People get too hung up on numbers correct bullshit
If Bizzarrini dug it, I dig it. Hail the mighty 327!
I got a small block 400 for sale 2,000 running
I got one in a buick Electra. Works for me because that's not a fun car anyway
Back in the mid to late 60's you could buy a 327/365 short block for around $250 from the Chevy dealership.
Actually they would never dyno the engine at 5800 rpm......more like 2500 rpm....they lied about the horsepower obviously because you would not be able to insure the thing if they gave the true hp reading at 6500 rpm.
400 SBC KING OF SBC
Why are old engine valve covers clean and simple vs new ones. Is all the stuff on news fi.
Definitely the best SBC out there, something to do with Harmonics, also could rev past 8 or 9 grand with the right valve springs!, but I could've sworn the 327 came with 4 bolt mains in the trucks and the high HP version's,by the time I got to work on one it was already 1974,so it could have already been worked on by then?🥴😏😁👍♥️😎👌
The issue I’ve always seen is the idea of bigger is somehow better. 305s came out in the start of the emission era when cats and smog basically robbed them of any performance. So everyone remembers them as slow or underpowered. I had a 305 with older 350 416 heads that did lower compression but the 305 kept running after years of driving in an old GMC. It never ran hot, always cranked and got decent gas mileage. I’m not trying to win a race. I think as time goes along more people will learn that simplicity has its advantages.
Been running them since the early 80s they make good engine including light drag racing
454 sounds 500 off its powerband idling 😂 The ls sounds low compression
I appreciate this information. I just purchased a 1969 GMC Hand-bus G20 passenger van. It has a 1967 327 camel-hump heads, two-barrel, TH350 12-bolt posi. I've always liked 327's and worked with a few of them but didn't know some of info you're presenting. Thanks.
Can I turn my 350 to a 400 small block
Lets never forget... The 305 came out in the mid 70's when even the 396 was under 300 h.p. AND, why would you build one when there was SO much more 350 stuff available. Swap the heads to aftermarket.. do some porting.. nice intake and your running up with many 350s.
I remember them having crank misalignment and were junk unless line bored to correct manufacturing errors. The rods were too short and they were prone to excessive wear. Why would I want that junk?
im glad i never had to listen to anyone else for my stuff
I get so tired of hearing the piston speed story. The LS platform has proven this wrong, time and time again. The reason a 302 makes more power at higher RPM is because IT HAS TO! TQ x RPM ÷ 5,252 = HP A small displacement engine will never make impressive torque, anywhere in the RPM range. The ONLY way to increase HP in a small displacement engine is RPM.
400 block with 350 heads is a good low cost upgrade 😂
Vortec 305 heads I've actually cc'd to be 60cc. 1.94 valve in a 3.836 bore is a bad idea... Valves are far too shrouded to properly flow air like one wants. Just bored a 305 .060" to 315 and running the 059 head with a rebuilder head gasket I actually got it to 9.9:1 on my calculator. Stayed low lift with a L98 cam.
I have a 69 z/28 with the original dz302 in it, as well as a ce302 sitting in my garage. I was thinking of building the ce302 with a good set of rods/pistons, solid roller, some good heads, etc.
Mine ran so smooth couldn't tell it was started. 68
Why are you neglecting to mention the horrific connecting rod angle at bdc with the short (5.5") factory rods??? They need to use 5.7" or 6.0" rods with corresponding pistons that way the bottom end doesn't beat itself to death, engine will really sing if properly setup... Comanche out...
Mc Laren ran many engines later all aluminum 494 engines buy Gary knudsom in US lucas McKay Kinsler mechanical fuel injection chevy supported them along with Jim Hall and a few others The turbo charged M20 with was never built M20 was last Teddy Myer could see writing on wall with Penske 917 _ 30 Shadow cars had and ran a turbo car but the Can Am was dead
My 406 468hp,506trg
ahhh the ol headgasket blowers..lol
Just picked up a 2-bolt 511 casting, untouched and in good shape. Will add some good heads, 6” rods, and drop in into my 71 C3 when the current 350 dies. Thanks for the video Hermano.
I just a bought a 63 sport coupe that has a 1969 305
They didn't make 4 bolt mains from factory, why do I have 2, been drilled???
I have 2 blocks with 010 casting number and they both have 4 bolt mains, chart says 010 number is 327, by this video, they made 4 bolt mains from factory.???
Fun fact : Every engine ever offered by GM up to that point was available in the 1969 Camaro...inline 6 to a 427.
I have a 1979 chevy camaro with a 305 original motor from factory ran great until cam went to lunch will replace cam and it will run great again
In my opinion, there an everyday get-up and go kinda engine that gets good power but nothing more. But if you put performance parts in, it will make power , but I'd rather spend my time and money building up a small block 350 or 400 or an LS motor.
Well done video! Greetings from Vancouver Island British Columbia Canada 🇨🇦
