Not a huge fan of kido butai and big blue fleet victory condition. It locks players into one course of action. I wonder how different play would be without this.
You could try playing without it. USA doesn't really need to go for Big Blue Fleet and with the 2:1 requirement, Japan should fairly easily stop them anyway. Perhaps try a couple games without Kido Butai. I suspect this would give an advantage to the Allies, but you can test it out. The Axis has less flexibility in what VP's they can actually hold onto, given that the Allies take their turns right before the roll.
Hi. I'm wondering if it would be possible to allocate aircraft to MAP as the leading force in a combat turn. Let's say that in your example there are also manned transports in the fleet. I wouldn't want to risk the submarine sinking my transport due to target selection, so I would send a fighter from that aircraft carrier as MAP. The submarine would sink and the advancing force could continue?
This is exactly how you would play it! Send an aircraft on MAP to the sea zone containing the submarine. The aircraft is the screening force and engages the submarine. The naval transport is the continuing force and cannot be hit by the submarine (as the only thing defending units can hit in a screening battle is the screening force). The aircraft will either kill the submarine on that first round of combat, or the sub will submerge, but either way, the naval transport can continue.
@@GW36_Enthusiast Should the attacker always decide in advance about screening forces without having an answer from the defender? Is it necessary to create a screening force even if the attacker does not know whether the submarine will sink or not?
@@kramolismarek1538 The attacker will usually decide to to create a screening force because if the attacker does *not* decide to create a screening force, then the defender can elect to engage any ship that enters. Submarines have target selection on a "1" and this means if the attack doesn't create a screening force, the submarine could hypothetically target select an important unit (like a fully loaded naval transport). If the attacker is brave, he could just enter the sea zone without creating a screening force and basically dare the defending submarine to attack for one round. If the defending submarine does engage and there is no screening force, then the submarine gets to pick the target on a "1", but all the attacking units can counterattack and sink the submarine. Does this make sense? You don't always have to create a screening force, but if you have an aircraft within MAP range, it's a no-brainer versus defending submarines because when the attacking player creates a screening force of an aircraft on MAP, that is the only unit that can be attacked by the defending submarine (and submarines can't hit aircraft). Versus a lone sub, send the aircraft on MAP and make it your screening force, and the submarine is basically useless. You don't want to leave your defending submarines in range of MAP for this reason!
@@GW36_Enthusiast Ok, I understand. One last thing to clarify. If I don't have a plane on the MAP or I need a plane elsewhere. Can I send a ship/ships to the MZ with a submarine as a screening unit? Would the submarine then have to hit these ships and not continue with the transports? Or it can hit the continuing ships and the screening will ignore it. Thank you for your answers.

Hi, I'm wondering if the transport can also be pushed to maximum movement in continuous force and an amphibious assault can occur. or can the landing no longer occur?
Excellent question! In prior versions, you could not push forward to maximum movement and perform an amphibious assault, but now, in version v4.2, you can!
@@GW36_EnthusiastExample: I can therefore create a screening force to clear the area, advance with the advancing fleet another two spaces (+1 movement from the port), where I will create a screening force again, clear the area and conduct an amphibious landing.
@@nikolavitkova9490 Yes, this is how it works! It used to be that if you just put a single surface warship in a ring 1 space away from any vulnerable land zone that you made it impossible to amphibiously assault that land zone. But now, a picket line of ships like that could just be screened, fought, and the continuing force can move forward.
Hi, wasn't it a bit risky to send planes to Korea when there was a threat of a border clash from Primorsky Krai?
Well, I suppose you are correct! USSR would have to be an audacious player to go for a 1/12 chance at a cost of 75% of national income! It's 1 pip versus 12 pips, but you are right that there are players who might go for that! I'll change my play in the future. Thanks so much for helping me become a better player! 8 )
Now, heres a question. If daodao is created, does daodao get the ipp from the land zone it is created on and have a bank that it can spend similarly to the KMT and CCP? Or is the only way it gets new units through lend lease from the Japanese
Dadao doesn't collect income. It doesn't have a National Reference Sheet and can only get new units via reinforcement rolls.
Hey enthusiast, great video. I was just wondering if it’s possible for Japan to make multiple successful influence rolls on chinese warlords to make dadao even larger. E.g. turn 1 it has a successful influence roll on suiyan and dadao is created. On turn 2 could Japan make another influence roll on beiping/hopeh to add to Dadao territory and make them even larger?
Yes! Note that Japan must have a Japanese-possessed land zone adjacent to a warlord to make an influence roll, so after those 2, Japan will have to try and capture other land zones adjacent to warlords to attempt to grow further. But with lend-lease, Dadao can capture more territory from CCP and KMT on it's own!
@@GW36_Enthusiast Oh wow so Dadao could have 2 separate areas of territory and get quite powerful without Japan ever aligning them. Thanks for your response!
@@tealino1 Exactly right!
In one of my games my Japanese ally also went for the "pacifist" strat. He was really lucky on the 5 D12's USA got after DoW on UK and just completely left China alone. If it works, you can really snowball outta control with Daodao. With the Lendlease too it basically means you have a free minor factory in Kwangtung for the inevitable invasion of China.
Very interesting! I like your concept of almost having a free factory with the ability to Lend-lease to Dadao!
Isn't Mongolia consider a Warlord or is that just to the Chinese?
No, Mongolia isn't considered a Warlord, but rather a minor nation controlled by USSR. You can't currently influence Mongolia like the Warlords.
@@GW36_Enthusiast So it's an exclusive KMT thing. Thanks
@@Seriona1 The backfire on a "12" thing is exclusively for KMT. KMT has no way to directly influence warlords themselves. Their only hope is for CCP or Japan to screw it up!
@@GW36_Enthusiast I'm talking about KMT can invade Mongolia under certain conditions. I thought Morten by accident allowed Dadao to happen in Mongolia.
@@Seriona1 Ah, I see! You are correct that CCP, Dadao, and KMT can attack any land zones originally with a Chinese warlord, KMT, CCP, Manchukuo or Mongolian roundel as well as Formosa and Hong Kong.
Hey Enthusiast, been out of the loop for a bit and I have a question. Is the Dadao government part of the core rules or is it from an expansion?
Core 4.2 rules
Greetings, Winter! Seriona's correct - core rules!
You were trying to convoy for 4 and you took 2 how terrible is that ?
11:24 The Pot calling the Kettle Black
Battlesship cost You 5 so You save none
Kido Butai and Improved Construction lowers the cost to 4.
It seems that you and Germany take battles where you are relatively light. Maybe that is partially responsible as to why you keep running into battles where the defender does well.
Hello GW36, I was wondering where you got the Nationalist and Republican sculpts for Spain because I could not find them on HBG. I wasn't sure if you got them somewhere else or if i missed something, but if you can direct me to where you got them, that would be helpful since they are great sculpts! Thank You!
They are the 3D printed sculpts for the Spanish Republicans from HBG. Part number HBG_3DP_0965. You will have to paint them though, because they come to you gray. I just use spray paint.
@@GW36_Enthusiast Thank you!
Great video, but I'm still quite confused about the lend-lease with multi-stage units, such as capital ships. Can I lend-lease a CV or BB to other nations? Also, if I'm lend-leasing a base with multi-stage, is it built in the recipient's land zone or mine before being completed?
Great question! You may lend-lease multi-stage ships to other nations as long as they do not require technology to unlock (large ship construction). If you are lend-leasing a multi-stage unit, you start building it and announce that it is designated for the purpose of lend-lease, but you do NOT have to specify what nation will end up receiving it, only that it will be lend-leased. It sits on the build queue, advancing stage by stage. When you complete the construction of the ship, at that point you announce where it will be delivered. It is produced on that last turn at an eligible shipyard in the home country of the sending nation, then it follows a supply path to the receiving nation. It may be either delivered to a sea zone adjacent to an eligible naval facility located in the home country of the receiving nation, or in port at an eligible major naval facility located in the home country of the receiving nation.
@@GW36_Enthusiast Thank for your reply! This seems to be a powerful strategy. Suppose that Germany player lend-leases his starting uncompleted BB to Italy or Japan, breaking the navy balance between Axis and British or USA.
@@creepingcreeper2763 Note that ships on the build queue must be placed there designated they will be lend-leased. You can't change a "normal" ship on the build queue to be designated as being for lend-lease. They have to be started that way. It would be too powerful to be able to change your mind mid-build. So the German player cannot lend-lease the battleship he starts the game with on the build queue because it wasn't started as designated for lend-lease. But you are right that this could be a powerful strategy. Silk likes to start a battleship designated for lend-lease as USA, then decide on the last turn which nation he's going to send it to. If he lend-leases it to Sydney, that affects Japan's ability to have Kido Butai, just as you were saying.
@@GW36_Enthusiast I'm new to this game, so I really appreciate your detailed correction. Looking forward to your new video!

Ok!
Here is an analysis of how lucky I got this turn, battle by battle (pips added up for all rounds of each entire battle): Hopeh: 56 pips attacking, 18 pips defending. Attackers got 3 hits, which was 1.67 below average. Defenders got 1 hit which was 0.5 below average. I was more unlucky than the CCP in this battle. SZ P36: 20 pips attacking, 12 pips defending. Attackers got 1 hit, which was 0.67 below average. Defenders got 1 hit was perfectly average. I was more unlucky than the USA in this battle. Convoy Raiding: Attackers averaged 11 on 2 D6, which was 4 above average. Defenders averaged 6 on 2 D6, which was 1 below average. I was 5 IPP more lucky than average here, but I did not roll for my last coastal submarine, so we'll say I was 4 IPP more lucky than average. If each hit is typically 3 IPP, then I was 1.33 "hits" above average in this battle. CW was more unlucky in convoy raiding. Assessing the luck of the First Strikes in Luzon and the Visayas and British Malaya: If you combine my first strikes in Luzon and the Visayas (8 pips from the 2 battleships) and my artillery in British Malaya (2 pips), and compare this to the 2 fortification first strikes defending in British Malaya, we both missed with our 10 pips of first strikes, so we were exactly equally unlucky here. Luzon and the Visayas (without first strikes): 11 pips attacking, 14 pips defending. Attackers got 1 hit, which was 0.08 above average. Defenders got 1 hit, which was 0.17 below average. I was more lucky than USA in this battle, but you can see it's closer than you expect. British Malaya (without first strikes): 14 pips attacking, 8 pips defending. Attackers got 2 hits, which was 0.83 above average. Defenders got 1 hit, which was 0.33 above average. I was more lucky here, but if this had gone to the 2nd round, then I would have had 14 more pips versus only 2 more defending pips, which would have been 28 pips attacking 10 pips - perfectly average. But I must admit, above average luck! If one of the the fortification first strikes had hit, I would have lost an artillery (4 IPP) and the 4 extra income I earned (another 4 IPP). Lower Egypt: 130 pips attacking, 89 pips defending. Attackers got 14 hits, 3.17 above average luck! Very lucky indeed! Defenders got 6 hits, 1.41 hits below average. Total Turn Luck: 241 pips attacking, 151 pips defending. Attackers got 21 hits, 1 above average. Defenders got 10 hits, 2.58 below average. So this turn was less about me being lucky than it was about Bruce being unlucky, especially in British Malaya and Lower Egypt.
How did you get your dice so small
You can purchase 8 mm D6's!
Very lucky is a under statement
🤣
Attack on Lower Egypt. Are the "Ghost" Militia from Commonwealth cruisers in port?
Will you ever do a full how to play series? I just got Axis and Allies Global and have played 3 games and I am loving it. I plan to eventually save up and buy Global War 1936.
Is there a particular topic you would like me to cover? Have you watched my "Understanding" Series of videos? I've covered many topics!
Do you know if I can trade in my 4.0 map for a 4.1 map?
@McKayBennett You can't trade, but i believe there is a slight discount.
Sumatra was scary
So do Britain and France not get the 1 IPP for the Germans annexing Austria until their next turn?
I am trying to teach a few friends how to play GW36. How would you recommend I go about it?
Hopefully, you have 3 or more players. If you have 4+ then have the weakest player team up with the strongest player. The Allies are the toughest to play well and it's easy to lose the game as a novice Allies' player. Put your strongest person as Commonwealth. USSR is easier to learn because you mainly have to learn the rules for land forces. I have a "Understanding" playlist that goes over various things. I would consider having people watch other people's RUclips wars, but it can also be super fun discovering painful lessons on your own. Don't hesitate to ask me questions. Are you on the Board Gaming Bro GW36 Discord server? That's a great resource.
@@GW36_Enthusiast I have a group of 6 including me. I am the only one who knows how to play. The others don't even know how to play Axis & Allies(Maybe). No, I am not on the Board Gaming Bro GW36 Discord server. What is the discord address?

At the Java battle you removed a Dutch militia in the first round but you rolled for 1 infantry and 2 militia defending in round 2, which is incorrect. You also didnt have target select so it souldve been thenother way around.
You are right! I will have to PBE this later. 17:29: there is a 50/50 chance the "4" I rolled was a hit! I'm not following where I didn't have target selection. I don't remember applying a target selection hit.
PBE'd the "4" rolled at 17:30 and it was the 2nd infantry. Great catch, Wess79ful! Java is taken with only 1 infantry, 1 marine.
@GW36_Enthusiast I'm not making this too easy for you! Goodluck Pete :)
Hey another question, not sure if you know but was wondering can the commonwealth only receive one lend lease a turn in 4.2.1 couldn’t seem to find anything about that in the current rulebook as well when it comes to lend lease arriving in home country if you are playing with the Netherlands expansion and the Netherlands has already fallen are they unable to accept lend lease since they have no home country? Thanks!
Greetings! I don't know the expansions or how any expansion rules work, but the Commonwealth countries (GB/FEC/ANZAC) can only receive one lend-lease unit per player turn. So USA can't send a fighter to Great Britain the same turn they send a submarine to ANZAC. But USSR could send Great Britain a fighter on USSR's turn, then USA could send another fighter on USA's turn.
Okay awesome makes sense and I guess just as a general rule u cannot lend lease to non home country territory’s other than militia upgrades ig? Thanks again!
@@pierceshelton2110 Note that FEC is an exception to the requirement to lend-lease to home country. FEC does not have a Home Country. It may receive lend-lease in Calcutta and Maharashtra.
Hi I know it’s unrelated, but you have been pretty helpful this far and I really appreciate it. Couldn’t find the answer I was looking for when it comes to upgrades and researched units. If you know can researched units like attack transports be upgraded from a regular transport or do all new advanced units have to be produced and may not be upgraded? Thanks again!
@@pierceshelton2110 Happy to help! Some technologies upgrade all your existing units as well as any new units you build. Examples of this are: Airborne Doctrine turns all existing Airborne Infantry into Elite Airborne Infantry, Long-range Aircraft gives +1 movement to all existing aircraft, ASW gives +2 attack to all existing seaplanes. Most technologies though only "unlock" your ability to build the new high tech units. Examples are: Advanced Mechanized Infantry, Advanced Artillery, Amphibious Doctrine (attack transports), Heavy Armor, Jet Fighters, Advanced Submarines, Large Ship Construction, Heavy Strategic Bombers, and Strategic Rockets.
Amendment to Non-combat Movement: Instead of the fleet carrier and 2 tactical bombers ending the turn in sea zone I13, they end the turn in sea zone P59.
