It takes away a touch of the romance but none of the fun to point out that this song was written @ 1916, by Peader Kearney, Brendan Behan's uncle and the composer of the Irish National Anthem, "Amhrán na bhFiann." It's a great song, but the version sung here wouldn't have been possible for another 50 years, at least. The Fenian Movement came after the American Civil War had ended, and by the 1880s was starting to wind down. Its successors were the Clan na Gael and the Irish Republican Brotherhood which, in Ireland, later became the Irish Republican Army. Brendan Behan was sentenced to 14 years in English prisons for IRA activity and went on to become one of Ireland's greatest writers. I love watching "General Sheridan" standing there listening and scheming and mourning those tragic Fenian losses. We're so lucky to be Irish... and American!

She's thinking of her time back in the green fields of Ireland ❤
John Ford parents came quite close to where I live and I only learned lately That Ken was married to John s daughter ❤
I was so happy to see Roy Rogers also. I knew he was one of the SOP but had never seen him with Ken.
🇮🇪☘️
❤❤❤❤❤❤RIp Ken Curtis🌹🌹🌹
My dad carried me at age of nine to see the Duke slaughter the Apache. Admission was 25 cents and a dime for hot box of pop corn. A great movie where the horses were actors.
This is just one reason Ken Curtis absolutely made the tv show Gunsmoke an absolute hit, he can sing so beautifully
The Good old days when we had real movies and great Theme s and the great voice of Ken Curtis ❤
Saw him sing on an episode of Big Valley years ago. Blew me away
I have Loved The Son’s of the Pioneers since I was about 7years old. On Saturday mornings would sit on the floor with ours ears to the old radio. (It was very early and we didn’t want to wake our parents.)
FAN FACT. The lead singer of the group bringing this classic Old West tune had been KEN CURTIS, bettter known as Festus Haggen out of GUN SMOKE. Before becoming a serious actor Curtis was known also as a Singer with various bands. He also had played later on in popular TV shows like RIPECORD, PETROCELLI and k, VEGAS and AIRWOLF He had been married with Barbara Ford the daughter of the famous Director John Ford. It is fascinating that the actor was able to bring such a Golum like type like Festus from Gun Smoke as well as other much more serious roles Fun Fact II: His carrier as a musician and a singer is totally ignored by the Germanic Wikipedia page.
Curtis was in a lot of John Ford films, as he was Ford's son-in-law.
Great sound engineering back in those days as well ❤
It's the best virtion I have ever heard ❤
version
The song was written by peadar Kearney

What a lovely voice ❤
Roy Rogers was in this group too!
Listening to my ol' buddy Festus here, I found myself thinking, "Who ever had a better singing voice? Sinatra? Crosby? Nah!"
Damn good looking man in his day. Such a beautiful voice
Lyrics 'Twas down by the glenside, I met an old woman A-plucking young nettles, she ne'er saw me coming I listened a while to the song she was humming Glory O, Glory O, to the bold Fenian men 'Tis fifty long years since I saw the moon beaming On strong manly forms, on eyes with hope gleaming I see them again, sure, in all my sad dreaming Glory O, Glory O, to the bold Fenian men. When I was a young girl, their marching and drilling Awoke in the glenside sounds awesome and thrilling They loved dear old Ireland, to die they were willing Glory O, Glory O, to the bold Fenian men. Some died by the glenside, some died near a stranger And wise men have told us their cause was a failure But they stood by old Ireland and never feared danger Glory O, Glory O, to the bold Fenian men I passed on my way, God be praised that I met her Be life long or short, sure I'll never forget her We may have brave men, but we'll never have better Glory O, Glory O, to the bold Fenian men For John Ford to make his 'ode to Ireland' movie, "The Quiet Man", he had to make "Rio Grande" first. Ken sings in "The Quiet Man", also.
I love to hear Ken Curtis and Sons of the Pioneers. So soothing.
They look creepy singing a sad song with that smile on his face.
Inside every real Irish person is a fenian trying to get out 🇮🇪✊️🤝🇵🇸✊️🇮🇪
☘️✝️🇮🇪👑🕊
Thank goodness we have these classic memories to savour.
Never knew Rio Grande was colourized. , marvelous
The song was written in 1916!
My Dad use to sing this to me. I'm 76 now and I so wish I could hear him sing it to me again.
Back when Music was still Music!
Glad I found Ken Curtis on my phone. Sure enjoying it
What's a Finnian ?
Fenian .. irish rebels
@@mikedon5205 That was a rhetorical question. I read somewhere that Irish immigrant recruits made up the single largest ethnic group in the US army around that era. Maybe automatic online translation has spelling issues ?
Thanks for sharing I was growing up watching these movies Ken Curtis is a great actor and his smile 😊he’s a great person
I love Festus, too!
I think you mean Fenian, not Finnian.
My mother's favourite song and one filled with feeling - love them all and wonderful - that they - all of them are eternal.
I Really Liked Uncle Festus
one of my favorite songs
What singers these boys were
In Erinnerung für Holgi❤
The Fenian Revolt took place in 1867.............'We may yet have good men, but we'll never have better...'
Dose the lead singer look familiar? He was a accordion/singer in the pub in the movie “ The Quiet Man “
Films which touched the emotions and the heart. Violence today not acceptable. Rosa Larsen
my sisters name is Kathleen! we were born in Belfast!
