It’s an unusual place to pass but there are many great overtakes in F1 and few will go down as historic but this doesn’t belong in that group. Still a brave move to pull off though.
While schumi backed off it still is telling that irvine gained all that ground on the williams ahead. Eddie was on a very light fuel stint, never the less, an AWESOME move. Cant think of a better piece of driving by Irvine
Whilst I think Schumacher was backing Mika up here it was still a hugely impressive move to go around them both in race conditions on the outside. Also Irvine was not in the massively light car that people seem to be suggesting. Watch the race, its RUclips. He only comes in a couple laps earlier than the Williams and Schumacher. He was just simply on fire that particular day.
Not true, Schumacher intentionally blocked the other drivers to pass Irvine, irvina's tactics in this race were completely different than Schumacher's. He had a very light car to overtake the villeneuve and block it for Schumacher :) I'm very sorry about the accident that happened to Michael but let us not call this overtaking the best in f1 history
Actually that is not the case. I used to think Schumacher blocked Mika for Irivine to go around them both but all data and comment suggests thats not the case. The plan was for Irvine to already be in front at the start, but he didnt get a good start. Even the video shows that both Schumi and Mika broke no speed. The only driver who intentionally blocked anyone in that race was Villeneuve which was the reason Irvine built such a huge lead, not because he was light on fuel. All top 4 cars pitted within a couple of laps of each other proving fuel had nothing to do with it. So this remains, in actual fact, one of the best overtakes ever.
