Hi Alex, I thought I’d add a comment explaining some of the points that you found confusing in the issue. I think, as a whole, the issue reads better if the reader has a wider understanding of the new Ultimate Marvel status quo. Essentially, Colossus, Magik, and Omega Red run a Soviet Union with the name filed off (the collapse of the Soviet Union never happened in this reality). They project to the rest of the world an identity as the welcoming, peaceful homeland of mutants, but actually run a brutal, repressive regime that experiments on mutants. From the issue, you’re supposed to get that Nightcrawler and Mystique escaped from some form of internment/reeducation camp and joined a resistance movement where they met Logan and became his friend. Logan was later captured after an altercation with the Eurasian forces and brainwashed. The letter at the end of the issue, written by Nighcrawler as a kind of newsletter to the rest of the resistance network, I think is basically supposed to accomplish two things: 1) explicitly state the characters’ connections and 2) lay out that, in this reality, Wolverine started as the friendly freedom fighter and became a broken, brainwashed killing machine as opposed to the opposite order in the main Marvel continuity. Hope this helped!

Thank you so much for this insight! The thing that really confused me the most was when mystique changed into colossus. But I appreciate the info! The thing about alternate reality comics is i think they need to be super clear on a lot of stuff because the reader automatically defaults to the main reality if they don't know any better.

I still have this issue. Bolton also worked with Chris Claremont on a Red Sonja clone called Marada: The She Wolf. Kull is actually older than Conan. The first Conan story was actually a re-write of a Kull story. The Kull story was called " By This Axe I Rule". Howard rewrote it with Conan & called it" The Phoenix on The Sword". Doug Moench's name is pronounced " Mench" like bench. The "O" is silent. He's most famous for his Moon Knight & Batman runs.

I just finished all 10 issues. Very cool. It's been on my bucket list for...well...decades. finally got a round tuit. Due to a recent upload (you're welcome) there is a googleable method to "get comics". These issues in particular. There's music track on the utoobes you can find by doing a search for "london reading music". I used it as background music while reading. Seems fitting. It seems to me that this alternate universe is borderline steampunk. What with the blimps and all. Really liked this series. We should start a petition for Guy to do some more issues.

Continuity basically did a series of mini-series. This is the #1 issue of the Rise of Magic storyline, which is the LAST issue of Hybrids. The story is supposed to crossover into the other books, but the next part will just tell a completely different story with no reference to anything that has gone before. LOL Peter Stone (whoever he is) was NOT a very good writer and the entire Deathwatch 2000 crossover was just a huge mess. I will say that I LOVE Continuity's characters and would love to win the lottery and buy these characters from Adams' estate. They've got great potential!

I have been reading Vampirella or Vampy since September 1969. She's had three distinct runs: Warren, Harris and Dynamite. She's currently in Dynamite. She has several titles running; and she's a superhero who also happens to be a vampire. You see very little of the vampire stuff, but you see a lot of superhero stuff and also soap opera drama with various characters who have their own books and runs. It's a nice way of selling several titles at once. She started as cheesecake from the mind of Forrest J. Ackerman in association with James Warren. Warren, who fathered Warren Publishing, had already published Famous Monsters of Filmland, Creepy, Eerie, and wanted another title. Ackerman was inspired by a fashion model and actress named Marissa Mell and decided to base a character on her; and Vampirella was the result. She began as a kind of lightweight Annie Fanny knockoff, i.e., hypersexualized and a bit ridiculous. She was the titular host of an anthology series, but it was quickly recognized that she was a strong enough character to star in most of her own stories. In fact, she took off and grew in relation to the feminist movement and morphed from a character of, by and for men to one who has a lot of women followers because she's strong, independent and admirable. She has a strong sense of ethics and fights against forces of destruction and malevolence for what most people would think of as good. Harris might have developed her to her maximum potential with great character and complex stories, but their plans fell short. They sold her off to Dynamite which has been running her title for several years. In order to fully appreciate her character, you really need to follow her evolution through the three imprints and also grab some current ones to see where she is now.
