Morandi Style Still-life Painting 1
Hi, my plate gets sticky with each use and kind of “dissolves”. I have reconstituted it several times and it otherwise has a beautiful texture/weight/feel. I’m using acrylic paint on paper and fabric. After several uses the plate gets so sticky that it adheres to the paper/fabric and splits. Any clues? I can’t find anyone else with this problem.
Hmm, not sure. maybe the glycerine wan't mixed in well enough. Do not wash it or put water on it.
@ thanks. It has been mixed several times when I have melted it down to reset it. I use acrylic paint on it. No water. I have left it sit for months and it appears stable and is a great consistency. It is baffling.
@@MaryanneThompson-j3c the only thing I can think of is the type of paper you are using. Some papers really stick to the plate. I mostly just use plain photocopy paper.
@@ncatcreate I use plain paper too when using paper but I use it for textiles - cotton fabric. I generally use paper for the first several pulls and have found it gets sticky before I get to the fabric. Thanks for your time. I think it’s just a mystery and maybe I should try again from scratch.
Why do you put ink on paper first? It seems easier to ink the glass.
The ink is put on a sheet of thin plastic that is able to be run through the press. Paper goes on top of the plastic.
M😅ine cracked do it need to add more gelintiine .or just. Water. I may have added to much oil. 🤷
I do not add oil. That might be the issue?
@ncatcreate thank you.. I got it 😜 I made my own glycerin and messed that up but salvaged it
I found a very similar printable pdf of the recipe with alternatives here goodwerks.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/gel-plate-recipe-steps.pdf
what is lacking if it splits?
Not sure entirely but most likely the glycerine hasn't been fully mixed in with the water. It could also be over use perhaps. I suggest you just reconstitute it - there is a troubleshooting video that you can watch on my channel which shows how. It is a simple process. All the best
@@ncatcreate yeah not sure either... not sure if i should add more glycerine or more gelatine... third time lucky I am hoping - Thank you for replying!!
@@ncatcreate ok, I reckon that when i converted from imperial to metric, my conversions were out as i also halved the recipe... new batch ... exciting!!!!
First I thought, the Gelatine is not enough. But as you use so much Glycerine, maybe this gives the plate the stability, that should the gelatine do. But Glycerine is very expensive. I use a recipe with alcohol, Glycerine, water and Gelatine. And it works
Mi puoi, cortesemente, scrivere la ricetta con alcol e la quantità degli ingredienti? Grazie di ❤️
@@Ruby233 I made a Gelatine plate using this recipe. 250 ml water 125 ml alcohol 125 ml glycerine 80 grams gelatine You can then adjust this to the amount you need. Pour the cold water into a saucepan first. Stir in the gelatine and leave to soak for about 10 minutes. Now add the alcohol and glycerine and leave to dissolve on the lowest setting (keep warm setting) while stirring. When the liquid is completely clear, pour it into the mold. Please note that the mold must not be moved for a few hours. After 2 to 4 hours, place the mold in the refrigerator overnight. Do not cover it, otherwise condensation will form and if this drips onto the gelatine plate, it will cause unevenness. The next morning, carefully peel off the edges and remove the plate. Have fun trying it out. You should make the plate at least 1-1.5 cm thick.
@@Katzenlaufwunder Thanks for the tip... I will give it a go. I guess the alcohol would stop bacteria/mould getting into the plate?
The Glycerine is definitely what gives the plate its stability
@@Katzenlaufwunder grazie mille
Why didn't you turn the plate out? No wonder you were so concerned about bubbles. If you use the other side there are never any bubbles as the rise to the side you are using.
Good question. I keep the plate in the tray simply because it lasts much longer that way, ((Replacing it in the tray after use allows bacteria to get in and potential dark discolouration/mould to form), but yes, you are right, turning it over has no bubbles! Up to you which way you prefer
Two of these and one of this 😂😂😂😂😂 we all live near you
You don't take the deli plate out of the pan? How do you store the plate?
No, I just keep it in the tray and print on the top. I store the tray in a cupboard covered with another upside down tray. I find it lasts longer if you never expose the base of the plate. When the top is worn out though, I do then take it out and print on the base. When it is really tatty, I just reconstitute it. (there is another video on reconstituting and general troubleshooting that you can check out. Good luck!
hello and thank you for the video! I have seen some recipes that uses alcohol also; any idea why alcohol is used for?
I haven't heard of alcohol being used.... Not sure what would be the reason. Perhaps to sterilise??
@@ncatcreate thank you for replying <3 here is a video that uses alcohol in their recipe: ruclips.net/video/P0n-haYi-gY/видео.html btw, i have tried your recipe, but my plate failed and then i asked bard and it seems like blooming the gelatin might work better? i'm so confused about all the different types of recipes :p
@@denizdernek1822 😢 It can be a little temperamental. All is not lost! Have a look at my video Troubleshooting making a gel plate... you can just melt it down and have another go. Most likely you haven't mixed the liquid in properly.

I made my Gelli plate many years ago and I have used it a lot.
That is great! they really do last well
No recipe here. I'm in Canada so measurements are needed. Thanks anyway!
Hi. Thanks for a nice recepies from Denmark. I have now made my ovn, but i wondered how i can store it in the refrigerator
Or in normal room temperature? Thank
Nice, I'll give it a try! One question though, the watercolor reactivates when you put glue on it?
Not if you use a glue stick as the glue isn’t wet. Have fun!
Plz add receipe measurements
She’s using 80 g of unflavoured gelatin, 400 mL of glycerin (200 per bottle), and the Australian standard cup is 250 mL. One cup for the cold water at the beginning, one and a half cups for the hot water
Thanks!
I have watched a lot of videos re this method. I use gelatin and glycerine to make my own moulds. The glycerine is just to stop it from going mouldy. No need for all the slow process that you are following unfortunately. I put in one half cup of gelatin and one quarter of glycerine and just mix the two together in a glass jug, then I add my hot water out of the tap as much as I want. Mix up and let settle for a few minutes. I then go over the top with paper towels like you did to get rid of bubbles. Put jug in freezer for a few hours. Then I put in microwave at 50 percent at 3 to 5 minutes until mixture is all dissolved and you can pour into your tray. If this mixture is not enough for a tray just increase the measurement but no need for all the slow stirring etc.
Thank you for the video, it’s good to see someone from Australia doing this because I know what products your using and where to get them from ❤
May 2023. What longevity your instructions have. I made the block and it is perfectly sitting awaiting my efforts today. Thank-you. Recipe perfect I flipped the plate over and the surface is perfect😊
Thanks Paulette. Great to hear it has worked out for you!
I Paulette, maybe you can give us the measurements, please thank you
It is Hosho paper and you can get a lightweight one
I love your videos❤
Thank you so much Dolly!
Fabulous x
Thanks!
is this recipe mould resistant?
It’s not.
Hi Ecky. It lasts really well if the tray you pour it into is super clean and scratch free, and, if you do not remove it from that tray. Areas can go a little mouldy where there are rust or scratches in the tray. I just cut them out and re constitute the mix.
Its the glycerine that stops it from going mouldy
Measurements would be nice to add since we don't have the same brands here in Canada. I was unclear how much water, the size of the glycerin bottle and the amount of gelatin. Thanks
She’s using 80 g of unflavoured gelatin, 400 mL of glycerin (200 per bottle), and the Australian standard cup should be the same as your Canadian cup - 250 mL. One cup for the cold water at the beginning, one and a half cups for the hot water.
Oh thank you so much!!
@@psy_crone99 Thank you as i was just going to search another utube video. I missed the ingredient measurements. how did you get them? thanks again
Hello😁 I have Dolly Varden Pure Glycerine, would this work, or is vegetable glycerine something different?
I believe it has to be beef one
I am not sure but I think it would be fine
I like to work with exact qtties.

Thank you the video. Excellent explanation. Good that is is from an Australian as mainly all from America and UK

Hi,Many thanks for your video. Your gelatin plate video is the easiest to understand. But ,I failed . I'm Japanease. And I'm poor in English. I'm afraid if I can explain it well. When I tried your recipe ,I changed little bit. You tell 80g gellatin powder, but I put 100g. That why I found someone put 115g insted 80g. My gellatin plate is something wrong. All paint come off from gellatin plate. I couldn't Gelli Print Image Transfer- at all. All paint transrate on paper. Was this a matter of the amount of gellatin? Do you have any other ideas for my trouble?
I am not sure - It sounds like it may be the excess gelatine. The more you put in the stiffer and less sensitive the plate will be. You could watch the reconstituting a gelatine plate video on my channel and add more water to make it more sensitive. Good luck!
I was thinking about the ingredient, that I could find the same in the supermarket….hahaha and then I discovered in the comments that these is done in Australia . I’m so glad, I can use the same ingredients. It would be great if you did try to print once it’s done to see the outcome. Regards from Sydney.
Hi there. There is another video where I do gelatine prints which you can have look at. These videos were made for my classes during the Melbourne lockdowns so sometimes they are specific to their needs.
@@ncatcreate Hello. Are you able to send me the link?. Thank you very much
Should a homemade gel plate be sticky to touch when set?
It should feel grippy but not too sticky if that makes sense... A bit like gel grips
in the beginning it does feel sticky. If you put it into the refrigerator over night, the stickyness will disappear
Hey sorry how many packets of glycerine plz? And the other things
I just discovered your channel and I am fascinated by the mono printing depth you give the work. Thank you for sharing your talent!

Glad it was helpful!

How about a link to the recipe?
Hi, my plate uses144grms of gelatine, One bottle ie 200ml of Gelatine, 400ml of hot water. small amount of cold water to mix the gelatine to begin with. hope that helps. The nice thing with this product - if it hasn't worked once set you can chop it up into cubes and reheat in dish in warm/hot water and try again. put it in the fridge to shrink slightly over night and then take it out of the tray next day : ) ©JHeyes. All rights reserved.
