Electric Light Orchestra Studio Albums Ranked

Overall review and ranking of ELO Studio albums from 1971-1986, my likes, dislikes & comments on the art work. 1. Out Of The Blue 2. Face The Music 3. A New World Record 4. Time 5. Eldorado 6. Discovery 7. Xanadu 8. On The Third Day 9. ELO II 10. The Electric Light Orchestra 11. Secret Messages 12. Balance Of Power
Forgot Discovery when doing my list, I'd have it at 7a, between Zoom and On the 3rd Day.
Out of the Blue was my first album of any band. Got it when it came iut. Still have the same copy and plays perfectly to this day. Arguably my favourite album of all time, by anyone. But I also love Time which altjough is quite different is a masterpiece. I agree with your top 5, and like you I vould have these 5 in different order from day to day. For me the weakest by far is No Answer. Wasnt a big fan of Zoom when it came out, but it has grown on me a lot over the years and I now play it a lot. 1. Out of the Blue 2. Time 3. A New World Record 4. Face the Music 5. Eldorado 6. Secret Messages 7. Zoom 8. On The Third Day 9. ELO 2 10. Balance of Power 11. From Out of Nowhere 12. Alone in the Universe 13. No Answer 😊
Great list, Andy! I always love to see ELO2 rated highly. Just curious, have you heard From Out Of Nowhere and where would you place it?
Thanks for your comments, yes I do have a copy of Out of Nowhere but TBH I would have to re listen before passing final judgement! However it’s difficult to think that I would place it anywhere other than low as everything post BOP is essentially a JL solo project and therefore outside the scope of this video.
Out of the blue was my first ELO album, Christmas present 1978, my all time favourite ELO album, and JUNGLE is one of my favourite tracks from this outstanding album
Don't bring me down, number 3 XANADU number 1. ELO'S only number 1 which is a shame because they are a outstanding group in my honest opinion and I've been a massive fan since 1978 when i first heard sweet talkin woman, and bought out of the blue followed by the entire back catalogue
You’re missing the single of keep your hands on the wheel which was a uk release in 1978 and the only other track from on the road again that got a uk release
Hi, yes your right, I didn’t have it when I filmed this but thankfully its now in the collection.
I always loved ELO but was disappointed with all the albums after Out Of The Blue. I thought Discovery was their worse album other than Balance of Power. It sounded thin and weak compared to Out Of The Blue. They just started giving in to current music trends and Lynne got rid of the string section and choir which made them unique. I do not think any of their albums were bad though. I also would have left out ELO Pt. 2 as I consider them a separate band, and the last three ELO albums were not ELO but Jeff Lynne solo albums. I always forget about Xanadu, but I thought those songs were a bit watered down. Eldorado was always my favorite and you hit the nail on the head with that one. I also could still hear the string players on that album and not so much afterwards. I remember reading a long time ago that the string players actually did not play on the studio albums from Face The Music through Out Of The Blue, but do not know if that is true. Also, on Can't Get It Out Of My Head, you can hear part of the melody of Over The Rainbow on parts of it and thought Mr. Kingdom may have been The Wizard!! lol. Why not? Dorothy's slippers were on the cover!! I would rank the ELO albums in this order: 1. Eldorado 2. A New World Record 3. Out Of The Blue 4. Face The Music 5. Time 6. ELO 2 7. On The Third Day 8. Secret messages 9. No Answer 10. Discovery 11. Balance Of Power
Hi, thank you for your reaction, our top 5 appear to be consistent, I agree that after OOTB Discovery was a bit of a let down. I believe that the string players were involved in studio (at least for some of the time) up until ANWR. OOTB marked their departure (despite appearing in the credits they didn’t use their instruments!) However I heard that Melvyn Gale was around the studio and contributed Honkey-Tonk piano at the beginning of Wild West Hero as Jeff couldn’t get it right. Andy
Don't bring me down, number 3, XANADU NUMBER 1 ELO'S only number 1 which is a shame because they are a outstanding group, in my honest opinion, been a massive fan since 1978 when i first heard sweet talkin woman, and bought out of the blue, then the entire back catalogue
to me commenting your list, out of the blue was overrated and elo 2 underrated
Interesting list, you put ANWR as 1 and ELO2 as your second choice despite both alums being very different in sound and style. I see your list is top heavy with the earlier progressive albums despite your number one choice. I’m presently getting back into the progressive era, once again listening to OTTD & Eldorado. It’s refreshing sometimes to hear the actually string players (double tracked!) and remind myself what a great progressive live act they must have been. Cheers Andy
my list, though it was hard to put albums in an exact order 1. a new world record 2. elo 2 3. eldorado 4. on the third day 5. out of the blue 6. face the music 7. the first album 8. time 9. discovery 10. xanadu 11. balance of power 12. secret messages😀
Rain is falling is the most underated song to be honest
I agree, a lovely song. Time is ELO's last great album IMO
Great job, Andy! I agree with your rankings (appreciating that fact that your Top 3 could easily be shuffled). SNOW is a snoozefest while LIONHEART is, in my opinion, criminally under-rated. (The latter was my introduction to this amazing artist.) I'd probably rate DIRECTOR'S CUT a bit higher as I like her re-workings (especially the Stonesy take on "Rubberband Girl"). Note also that her re-recording of "Sensual World" happened because, originally, James Joyce's estate refused permission to use the text from his novel ULYSSES. This meant Kate had to come up with her own lyrics. Later, the estate granted Kate permission so she recut the song using Molly Blume's novel-ending soliloquy. It's interesting but I still prefer Kate's more lyrical original version. Glad you mentioned THE OTHER SIDES as it's a deep and rewarding collection. Kate put as much thought into her covers and b-sides as she did constructing her albums. The live BEFORE THE DAWN is also an engaging listening experience, especially for the more cinematic "Ninth Wave" with narration. Despite lacking early material, this is a great career capper. (Let's hope an earlier, shelved live set from her "Tour of Life" will eventually get the deluxe release.) You are correct: "This Woman's Work" was used (dramatically) in the movie, SHE'S HAVING A BABY.
Thanks Dean, it's great to have such insightful feedback, I hadn't realised the back story on ‘TSW’ Agreed that the BTD live set was a good document for the more recent shows, would love a proper Tour of Life show to get the full release treatment but suspect Kate would prefer not to release anything. I would recommend searching You-tube for Kate’s 1979 Manchester show, as I believe it was recorded by Granada for TV broadcast but ultimately not shown and archived. It’s a full visual show with sound board audio.
Thanks Andy. It's interesting how everyone's list is different. Here's my list (not including Director's Cut) which was really hard to prioritize and which is subject to change: 1. The Dreaming (masterpiece) 2. Never For Ever (masterpiece) 3. Lionheart (great 2nd album) 4. The Kick Inside (the one that started it all) - I purchased this vinyl album in USA. and the album cover is different than your version which I prefer. 5. The Red Shoes (heartmelting and thoughtfiul) 6. Hounds of Love (good intro to Kate) 7. The Sensual World (heartmelting and thoughtful) 8. Ariel (Well thought out and creative) 9. 50 Words For Snow (EXCELLENT imagery. The music is usually a bit too minimalistic, but it fits the theme, so it's appropriate). On another (helpful) note, the audio on this video is very low. I had to have the volume cranked way up just to hear you.
14. Balance of Power 13. From Out of Nowhere 12. Alone in the Universe 11. No Answer 10. Zoom 9. Secret Messages 8. Time 7. Eldorado 6. Discovery 5. On the Third Day 4. ELO 2 3. Face the Music 2. A New World Record 1. Out of the Blue
He did backward messages for real long before on "Fire on High": "The music is reversible, but time is not, turn back, turn back..."
I guess by "album track" he means a deep cut? Cos all songs on albums are album tracks lol
I love the first three albums by kate bush. 1. Never Forever 2. Lionheart 3. The Kick Inside "The Dreaming" and "Hounds of Love" were disappointing to me. After that i lost interest in her music
Hi Martin, interesting that you didn't like the Dreaming and Hounds! It took a while for me to appreciate the Dreaming LP, but yes those first three albums are fantastic.
Another excellent video, Andy. Again, we disagree on a few. I would have Balance of Power and On The Third Day much higher while Discovery would be lower. In answer to your question, did the ELO Megamix from the 12" of Getting to the Point ever get a CD release?
Hi Richard, thanks for your comments, no I do not believe the ELO Mega-mix ever got any official release on CD. Jeff does not regard it as canon. Epic apparently released it without his permission!
Hi Andy, I really enjoyed this. I was delighted to see Hot Space make your top 10. Personally, I would have The Game much lower and The Works much higher but we all have different tastes. Just subbed your channel and I'm looking forward to your ELO videos. I ranked ELO a few months ago if you'd like to check that out. All the best - Richard
My personal ranking would be 14. From Out of Nowhere (2019) 13. Alone In the Universe (2015) 12. Secret Messages (1983) 11. Balance of Power (1986) 10. Zoom (2001) 9. The Electric Light Orchestra (1971) (These top 8 are among my favorite albums of all time) 8. Time (1981) 7. On the Third Day (1973) 6. Eldorado (1974) 5. Discovery (1979) 4. ELO II (1973) 3. Face the Music (1975) 2. Out of the Blue (1977) 1. A New World Record (1976)
Thanks Cameron, I see our top 3 are the same.
Very nice ranking video, excellent presentation and knowledge about the albums, thank you! I haven't heard all of the studio albums, but from the ones I have ( about six or seven ) my favourite has gradually over, errr, time, become Time 😁 Out Of The Blue served as my introductory record to the band and it's no doubt my second favorite.
Thank you for your comments Fritha71, glad you enjoyed it!
1. A Day at the Races. 2. Sheer Heart Attack. 3. Queen II. 4. A Night at the Opera. 5. Jazz. 6. News of the World. 7. Innuendo. 8. Queen. 9. The Game. 10. The Miracle. 11. The Works. 12. Hot Space. 13. Flash Gordon. 14. A Kind of Magic
Thanks for sharing Rafael, A Day At The Races 1st, so what's your favourite track from this album?
@@andysvinyl1565 Difícil elección. Es tan bueno!!! tal vez "Me quitas la respiración" o "el vals del millonario"
For me, the best album of Queen is: A Day at the Races. The game...Mmm...
Secret Messages I would have put much higher.
ELO' s Eighties albums are as great as their Seventies material. " Time" is magical and very mysterious, I love the SM double album version ( which was released in 2018), and there are some fantastic tracks on BOP, too. I'm glad that Jeff tried out a lot of different things with ELO. Yes, the string sounds made albums such as Eldorado something really special, but do I really need them on every album? No. ELO wan't just about using strings. There was a lot of experimentstion, and why do people always overlook the fact that synthesizers and electronics played a significant role since ELO2. " Discovery" is the all-time fav album by electronic music maestro Jean Michel Jarre.
Great video, Andy! Like a lot of the back story you're adding with each album. Best video on ELO album ranking! Did you know "Do Ya" from New World Record used to be old demo from The Move which Jeff Lynne resurrected for ELO's NWR album recording sessions? Cheers
Hi Kevin, thanks for your kind comments. It's great when someone gives me positive feedback, makes it all worth while! Yes I knew of the Move track as I started listening to them quite early on after I discovered ELO. ELO also used to play DO Ya live before ANWR was recorded as part of a melody with 10538 Overture!
Good video. There is one more item I would like to mention. Although not Jet, it is ELO-related and did come out around this time. So in 1976, the film All This and World War II came out. It was a film that had old WW2 era films with covers of Beatles music overlayed on top. The film was a huge bomb (Fox had to pull it out of theaters within 2 weeks) but the soundtrack was a decent hit. Said soundtrack has solo recording by both Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood. Roy does covers of Lovely Rita and Polythene Pam, while Jeff does a medley of With A Little Help From My Friends and Nowhere Man. The soundtrack also features fellow Jet label mate Lynsey De Paul, along with other non-ELO-related acts (The Bee Gees, Elton John, Peter Gabriel, etc.) I can see why you didn't mention it, because its not on Jet (20th Century Fox Records in America and Riva in the UK, with Warner Bros distributing in Europe) but I thought it was important enough to add. Still doesn't detract from how good the video is.
Many thanks for your nice comments, I was only vaguely aware of this LP, but as I do not have it I didn't mention it here or else-ware in my other videos. One other item you might be interested in from around 1976 was ELO’s contribution to a little know movie called ’Joyride’ which features existing ELO songs and Barry Mann. ELO’s contributions are from the LP’s Eldorado’ & ‘A New World record’ includes ‘Can’t Get It Out Of My Head’ ‘Tightrope’ ‘Boy Blue’ ‘So Fine’ ‘Telephone Line’ and ‘Rockaria’ I don't have this either but it was released on United Artist label in the USA. Apparently Don Arden agreed to include ELO on the soundtrack to toughen up their image! Cheers Andy
Hi just wanna say, been enjoying your informative content on the band, nice job!....And just to mention I live close to Shard End, and still to this day, I'm amazed that this little obscure place is mentioned in that magnificent song All Over The World.
Hi, your welcome, very pleased that you appreciate the videos, I'm hoping to get a CD collection overview done before Christmas. I noticed your 'handle' name, is it a reference to Doctor Who?
@@andysvinyl1565 Yeah it's actually the name of the police car used in the Doctorin' the tardis video, that number one hit wonder by The Timelords.... Regards the CD's I noticed somebody mentioned about them in another video, it's a great idea, as my stuff is all CD's now anyway, had enough of records & tapes by the mid 80's, Cd's were the future, but i do have some of those coloured vinyls you showed, would never part with them, too cool looking.
Ahhh, that video 😃 actually I'm planning on getting a CD video review done this week, hopefully loaded by the weekend!
1. On The Third Day 2. Time. 3. El Dorado. 4.A New world Record. 5. Zoom 6. Secret Messaje. (Todos son buenoos! ELO best band Ever!!)
This somehow showed up in my news feed. Dude i have to agree with the other person, ranking Flash ahead of those three other albums is absolutely ridiculous really. I do like where you placed The Game though, one of my favourites. Ive always thought Day At The Races was overrated myself, i wouldnt even put it in the top half but each to their own.
Thanks for your comments, as you say each to their own, as I got into Queen pre these last 3 albums my love for their music was heavily influenced by their mid seventies out-put, imagine discovering ANATO, Q2, SHA, TG etc. in the space of 12 months then getting the eighties LP's. Not quite the same for me. These things are fluid, another day, another month and I could offer a different opinion.
Flash Gordon better than The Miracle, Innuendo and The Works? Seriously? Not even close in my opinion. Flash is easily the worst, its just mainly soundbites. How is that better than those 3 albums objectively? I’d have Innuendo a lot higher actually, it’s great. You didn’t include Made In Heaven either. If you had of id put that second last, it’s pretty boring. They’re clearly the weakest two Queen albums for me, sorry. The rest are all good, I have no problem where you rank any of them really. A Night At The Opera is obviously the best one.
I guess each to their own, I just like the whole sound of the album, it helps that I also like the film! Sometimes my judgement is influenced by what I don't like. You can ignore it if you want and just view my list as a 13 LP ranking. I deliberately kept Made In Heaven out of the mix as it was a post Freddie project. I'd most likely put it last anyhow.
What about ELO cassettes Andy, do you collect them. Only heard Time after Time after buying the Secret Messages tape back in the day. Not on the single vinyl release album.
Hi, I have a few of the later Epic cassettes (and I still have a cassette player in my hi-fi set-up) but generally no, one problem is that the older original cassettes tend to pre-date Dolby and would sound awful, having said that I wouldn't pas one up at the right price!
Yes I’m the same, started buying them after I felt my ELO vinyl collection was pretty much complete.
Time is my favourite elo album
Yep, in my opinion ELO's last great album!
I recently listened to some of their albums, and the one I enjoy the most is A New World Record, follow by Face the Music and Out of the Blue
1~ Out Of The Blue 2 ~ A New World Record 3 ~ Face The Music Discovery Eldorado and Time are very close. Jeff Lynne's catalogue of music is absolutely incredible. The man really is a genius.
One of my favourite cover details is the band in the right building’s window on the front of secret messages. I felt clever when I noticed it.
It would be nice looking into your ELO's CD collection. By the way, thank you for sharing.
Thanks for the idea Jose, I might do that in the future, next project however will be a Queen video!
Thankyou for the review - very interesting. I agree with your ranking of 'Out of the Blue' as number 1. Even though I got into ELO through 'A New World Record' as a 11/12 year old back when was it was released, the following album just gets ahead of it. There's not a bad (let alone average) song on the double album. However, Livin' Thing is my favourite song period - it has sentimental value being the first song of ELO that I got to know. Like you, I am less keen on their newer stuff, apart from the Time album. Enjoyed hearing your review...
Thank you for the comments Greg, hoping that Jeff gets to tour again next year!
Aquí en Chile 🇨🇱 ELO es una de las bandas favoritas. del rock británico🇬🇧su álbum más famoso en South América (Argentina,Brasil,Uruguay Perú,etc.) con seguridad es el álbum Discovery de 1979. Se desprenden de ahí hits. cómo "Last Traín to London","Confusión" "Midnight Blue" "Dont bring me down" "Shine little love""I nerd her love" "On the run" Wishing". Greeting from Santiago de Chile.
Apex-"Out of the Blue" 1977.
I know all ELO- albums in period 1971- 1986, They are so different in the style, so it i hard to list the from the best to the worst. But here is my list : 1. A New World Record 2. ELO 2 3. On the Third Day 4. Eldorado 5. Face the Music 6. The First Album 7. Out of the Blue 8. Discovery 9. Time 10. Balance of Power and 11. Secret Messages. Two comments, Out of the Blue was overproduced but contained good songs for a single album. And Secret Messages, planned double would have been in my list at the eighth position. And plus extra Xanadu of the ELO side was better than the Discovery album.
Hi Jussi, thanks for sharing your list, it's interesting that you have placed ELO's earlier albums higher up your list than mine but still have ANWR as your number one!
For me 'A New World Record' is the pinnacle of ELO, 'Out of The Blue' is a close 2nd.
It's a close run thing Joe, on another day any of my top three could be number one!
I bought the Getting to the Point 12 inch when it was released, from the Co-Op of all places
Love ELO. Wanted to watch this video because of the subject. But I found the volume to be so low that I moved on. Maybe a chest microphone would do the trick. I'll check back.
Thanks for the feedback Alan, yes apologies for the sound, thought I'd give these videos a go, I think the camera is half decent but maybe the mic is lower quality. I'll have to experiment before I do another.
I been a lifelong collector of this band. What a great collection you have!
Thank you Anthony, I'm aiming to get a couple more video's done on ELO soon!
Wha.....love it!
Glad you lined it, aiming to upload more ELO related vinyl in the coming weeks 😀
