I love that idea! I would be interested in being a part of that team when you put it together. I am also going to look into the job description and have it updated with testing equipment.
I agree with 85-90% of what you are saying. My only concern is with an associates degree, colleges tend to require too many courses that have nothing to do with the actual career, raising the cost of the education for profit. I do, however, think there should be more tech schools available nationwide. There should also be a nationwide pay standard set to incetivize education. I started 6 months ago without a degree or certification, it is possible to learn on the job but I agree that there needs to be more focus on the job description and the "why" up front. I do tons of research before I start something (there are many resources thanks to channels like yours and Boston career institute) so that helped me pick up on things faster than many of the people I work with. Some have worked there for over a year and are asking me questions. For my evaluation, they only focused on faster processing of instruments over quality. My immediate supervisor tells me that stained instruments are inevitable and not to focus on removing all stains. Thank you for what you do on this channel!
Thank you for listening and for sharing your perspective! You have valuable insights to share, especially with such fresh eyes to the industry. Keep up the great work and stay curious!
There are some Surgical Tech programs that participants graduate with AA in Health Science. The program I proposed to my organization consisted of pre reqs. A&P, Microbiology, Med term, etc. Followed by the Penn Foster two-month program, 120-day clinical rotation, Certification, and finally a 120-day probation for graduation.
This is such an interesting and awesome topic! Thank you! I just graduated from a 4months sterile processing program and did a 6 week 40 hours a week in a hospital. Sterile technician definitely do a lot. Some people think we are just washing dirty instruments but no. I was amazed by the people who work in the spd. I learned how to do decontaminate different surgical instruments and those heavy loaned instruments, learn how to operate the sterilizers and making sure the parameters are met and making sure the biologicals passed. And I also learned how to picked cases. And so much more!
Thank you for checking it out and sharing your thoughts. Sterile processing is an amazing field!

Important for us to know! Thank you Kevin!
Arlene Bush is so cool 😎
Great job Mary Ann!
I appreciate you putting out this video as many people in SPD don’t understand how these instruments are used. As well, they may not comprehend how important each part of the instrument is and why they must be cared for properly.
Thank you for your feedback!
John Whelan is the absolute best!
The basics are so important! Thank you Kevin!
Very interesting!
Glad you found it interesting! Did anything stand out to you in particular?
Yes actually! I was shocked to see how high the percentage of malfunctioning insulated equipment was failing standards.
@@hollymilstead6216 That is understandable for sure! Hopefully videos like these will help bring awareness to this important issue and remind frontline technicians to perform this life saving inspection each and every time. Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts!

I loved your information and I enjoyed your sense of humor! 😆 Thank you for all that!
Glad you enjoyed it! Happy SPD Week!

UV inspection light... in addition to cement chunks lighting up, you'll see cement "dust" too. Osteotomes and Freers are sharp and not intended to be used as a cleaning device, don' t be that tech. There is Orthopedic and Dental Cement remover out there, check the IFU and see if they're compatible. Don't allow yourself to be placed in an unsafe condition to make up for the incompetence of the OR (lack of POUC)
I really like that separate container idea. Great info!
Glad you liked it!
Thank you for all your content! I wish I would’ve known about you years ago…. better late than never!!
You are so welcome!
We're so glad you found us, and we're excited to have you as part of our community!
How often test?
Thank you for your question! At this time, both AAMI ST91:2021 and the FDA recommend that each facility determine how often surveillance testing (culturing) is performed within their own policy and procedures.
Great information! What is your suggestion if the facility will not purchase those?
If you don't have decision making or purchasing authority in your facility, then you are limited in what you can do. You might try looking into the IFU of the instrument and find where it states to keep the instruments in the open position during the soaking and cleaning part of the process. Then share your findings with the department manager to support your request.
Great insights from Katie Belski 😊
Should both test be done on the ultrasonic? Soil removal and cavitation?
Great question! ANSI/AAMI ST79 recommends that we test our ultrasonic cleaner daily for cavitation. It also states that we should be monitoring "critical parameters" so we can evaluate the performance of our cleaning equipment. To answer your question, yes. SonoCheck is used to test specifically for cavitation. Soil removal tests like TOSI, tell you if multiple parameters like cavitation, detergent dosing, length of time of the cycle, and temperature of the water are all working together to remove surgical soils effectively. Hope that helps!
its important to wipe down your area, keep your dept clean.
Such an interesting perspective. That was very interesting information. Thank you.
I have an idea for a series of episodes. What if you walked through the process of being apart of an AAMI Work Group? How to join, what the different groups review, what the actual process of reviewing, commenting, voting, and other things of working on the actual document.
We love this idea! Thank you for sharing. We could certainly do something like this. Let us know if you would like to be a part of it!
@@HealthmarkEducation absolutely I want to be apart of it 🙌
🙌🏼
Excellent info. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
How does Joint Commission or ACHC expect to see open case being transported to decontamination?
Great question! Open case carts are permissible as long as soiled instrumentation is contained in a puncture resistant, leak proof on the sides and bottom container with a lid. This is an OSHA requirement.
@@HealthmarkEducation So minimally the instruments need to be put back into their rigid containers with their lids on and any other soiled random items (including soft goods/ loose trash) must be put puncture proof closed containers if being transported on an opened and uncovered casecart? As well, is any type of “Dirty” / “Biohazard “ signage required? As far as the units transporting their soiled to items to decontamination… are they expected to display a “dirty” / “biohazard” sticker / signage on their puncture proof containers?
Thank you for all great information :)
You're very welcome! We are glad you found the information helpful. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
❤❤❤ so helpful thank you
Thank you for watching!
We had almost the exact same scenario happened at my home facility.
Great visuals!
Is it written anywhere as to where the indicators should be placed? I noticed many people don’t know that information.
In ANSI/AAMI ST79:2017, it is recommended to place one or more internal CI in a package so that one of them is visible to the person opening the package, one of them is in an area that is considered least accessible to steam penetration, and in accordance with all applicable IFUs.
Thank you
You mentioned about not putting a load stamp on top of the BI cap. . Is it OK to write the load number with a sharpie on top of it?
You mentioned about not putting a load stamp on top of the BI cap. . Is it OK to write the load number with a sharpie on top of it?
We would recommend that you consult the manufacturer's IFU for the BI product you are using. Some of them have a spot to write the load number, and some may have it on the side.
Oh my that’s quite an example 😬😂 Great presentation and information
Glad you liked it!
Oh my that’s quite an example 😬😂 Good info!
Again, great information.
Glad it was helpful!
I apologize if this was mentioned but are there more challenging spots on the washer shelves as far as placement of the tests ?
Yes, it would be more challenging to place tests by the corners of baskets and/or at the outer edges of the washer cart shelf out from under the spray arms. For the TOSI, we recommend that you place the test under the spray arms though as this is where your instruments should be loaded.
@@HealthmarkEducation Thank you
Great seminar!
The video won’t play all the way through
Are you still having trouble getting it to play all the way through?
When you refer to dilators… Do you mean something like the Maloney esophageal dilators?
Yes, that's correct.
@@HealthmarkEducation the facility that I am at is currently processing them via recert 😑 I wish they would steam sterilize them. Thank you .
Very informative Thank you
It definitely has been a hot topic. I appreciate the video.
The facility that I am currently at has the staff use a broken off wooden cotton swab to hold the naturally closed instruments. I just love to check for and pick the little splinters out of the tray from its disintegration during the wash cycle. 😑 I am pretty sure those do not break down well in the washer either and may cause issues.
We understand this problem that you are dealing with. That's why we have the instrument bands/spreaders you can find here: www.hmark.com/product/clamps-spreaders-for-effective-cleaning-of-bone-forceps-and-with-ring-handles/. We also have a short video on how to use these products that you can find here: ruclips.net/video/belhVEYt8js/видео.htmlsi=tufDd5ns4B7sxbdh
@@HealthmarkEducation I have seen those! Those look great! I doubt they will purchase those as they won’t even buy level 5 indicators or small or larger brushes to properly fit the lumens …10 -20 other items that other facilities have to do the job is better properly :(
If you do have a wet pack, are you supposed to only re-wrap the affected item or are you supposed to redo the entire load?
You would follow your facility policy on this. However, ANSI/AAMI ST79:2107 in annex O states that if two or more packages are found to be wet on the outside or inside of the package, then the entire load should be considered a wet load and redone.
@@HealthmarkEducation thank you
At some facilities I see techs wearing neck fans on the clean side. I have seen techs bring covered “water” to their assembly stations after management leaves.
