Red backed kingfisher
In today's video I am in search of an unusual visitor to Melbourne, the red-backed kingfisher. When reports of this bird down by the Yarra started to trickle in I knew I had to get there to see it for myself. Enjoy!

Great work Franciscus! I just love that it seems all kingfishers tap their tail. Do you have any theories why they might do this? Do you think the strange weather (due to Climate change?) might have something to do with birds been seen in unusual places? I have a video where I pose a theory about Kookaburras cleaning their bills. Do you think I might be onto something? ruclips.net/video/V6sV24WmTS0/видео.htmlsi=Sa-udHwTkYGMTXHz
Como editar esos fondos suaves🤩
How much sharpening did you apply to images shown, just wondering does it need some with it's low pass filter.
No sharpening at all
@@FranciscusScheelings Do you still believe it's a good buy in 2024?
@@jezmink depends on your budget and what sort of photography you mostly do. If you can afford it I would look at some of the more modern bodies.
Amazing video mate 👏🏾👏🏾
Thanks buddy
nice
Cheers
Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it
the a1 and the a7iv literally use the same AF system, they're literally as good.
great video. I went to find this Pink Robin to Tasmania last year from NSW where i was. Now I'm up Far North area and out for fairy wrens pretty much.
Hope you managed to see one
Hi Franciscus, new sub here. Just came across while searching spotted pardalot birding in sydney area. I got lucky yesterday while visiting Garigal N. Park. Although my pictures not as clean as your my main purpose for bird photography is for ID. (short term memory)...lol. Thanks for sharing. I will following you on your Australian bird photography.
Thanks for watching!
I'm deciding between this and the a7r3 for birding. The former has great AF while the latter can help with reach via cropping. What would you pick?
I've never used the A7T3 so can't comment on what it is like. However both of these cameras are quite old now and I'd be looking more towards something like the A7IV if you can afford it because in this model you get bird/animal eye detect which is a huge bonus.
Oh wow thank you. Reminds me how much of a beginner I am. Stunning footage and photos.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed!
Nice pitta 🎉🎉🎉 nice photos
Thanks, glad you enjoyed
@@FranciscusScheelings no worries..is it easy to photograph this pitta??
Same as ours in N.Z. very shy, takes awhile to get consistent sharp image's especially flying.
They don’t breed in NZ though do they?
👍
Thanks!
Yes mabye the A1 is better, but the price. The same the lens, when you bay the prime 600 is better but i will not pay 11 k euro. For a hobby will i update the A7R3. The have not focus on eye off birds and faster systeem for a good price. Now i have the A6600 for backup for holyday.
What I missed a great deal with testing the a7R5 (compared to my a9) was the missing capability of a shutter sound in electronic shutter mode. It’s just not present there, is this the same with the a7IV?
Yes there is a shutter sound on the A7IV. Are you sure there isn't one on the A7RV I'd be surprised? I've never used one so can't be sure.
@@FranciscusScheelingsyes but only in mechanical shutter mode, not electronic
@@hilmarkampstra1686 Ah ok, that seems strange. I pretty much only use silent mode anyway so not an issue for me.
Thanks for this! I’ve been looking at a 2nd camera for a while, mostly for stills and could really benefit from the bird eye af (that I do not have on my a9) 👍
🔥🔥🔥
Still frigging around trying to see one in the wild
Where are you based?
@@FranciscusScheelings In Melbourne, I was told to tery Erskine Falls.
@@craig9563 I've never seen them there but that's because I haven't looked
Hi Franciscus, do you shoot in Slog3? I'm trying to explore my options outside of the normal video recording settings. Would love your thoughts.
No I just shoot in normal profile. I’ve thought about using log profiles but then I’d have to do extra colour grading which I’m not quite sure I can be bothered doing.
@@FranciscusScheelings that is the feeling I've recently faced as well. More processing isn't something I'm into these days. Thanks for your response.
Great shots - thanks. I live in Melbourne and have been trying for ages to find pink robins.
Thanks, yes they can be difficult to find. I’m running a private workshop for someone to show to give them tips on photographing these birds feel free to PM me if you’d be interested
With every marchy bite. Great Pinky session.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it
Great video as always :D
Thanks so much
Great video, my favourite little bird.
Thanks
Good job Franciscus
Cheers Simone!
Hello Francis. Where did you photograph it? As far as know is an Australian 🐦
Just outside of Melbourne in Australia
Awesome documentation Francis..
Thanks so much
Just a beautiful video.
Glad you enjoyed
Great footage of the kingfishers. Where exactly is this in Melbourne?
Morang Wetlands
Beautiful bird and nice video of it. You clearly shot it in a different occasion than the one where you were filming yourself, but it's still a nice work. Were you playing a call also?
No they don’t really respond to call back
Hello Can you tell me the brand and model of the tripod you use at 9:43 in this video?
It’s an Explorer EX-ACPRO explorerphotovideo.com.au/product/explorer-ex-acpro-ascent-professional-carbon-fibre-tripod/
Loved your images ❤ I m looking to get used a9. Is it worth in 2024.?
It will still take great images. The best camera is the one you can afford and the one you will take out with you.
Awesome so lovely capture
much for watching!
Great story telling mate. Well done!
Glad you enjoyed it
Sony A1 with 200-600mm Lens is amazing combo. Nice video with lovely footages.
Thanks so much!
Great shots mate! I love the shot with 2 kingfishers on the perch, the background is still really nice for a wider shot
It was a panorama, I stitched three closer shots together to get that look
You keep saying how the A1 is better. But I kinda expected that honestly
Hello, what tripod is this?
Hi, it's an Explorer EX-ACPRO Ascent Professional Carbon Fibre Tripod
Is this woodlands historic park ? Thank you in advance
No it's at the You Yangs
Great video. Not many content looking specifically at the bird eye af with small birds
Thanks so much
Hey! Cool video and amazing photos to come out 😮😊 The camo you used, looks pretty practical, what is it? Thank you, in advance.
Hi, the camo lens protector is from RolanPro
@@FranciscusScheelings ah sorry, i wasn‘t precise enough. I meant the net, that you put over your head.
Beautiful bird ❤
Thanks so much
That's a really good result with the converter, I'm surprised how well the autofocus worked....
Yeah mostly pretty good but to be honest I think you get as good results just by cropping
Wow! The most adorable species!! Loved watching your video!!
Thanks so much!
Loved every bit of it
Thanks so much!
can you please share the camera settings for sharp images like your's ( new video :D )
Camera settings change depending on situation but in general when photographing birds I try to use as fast a shutter speed as I can.
I saw one of them up close & personal a while ago. There was a flock of silvereyes picking aphids off my roses, so I went outside to have a look. There was a tiny little brown / white / black spotty bird sitting there right in front of me. It was so minute, perfect & full of itself. We looked into each other's eyes for a minute & it darted off with its silvereye friends. A magic moment. Then I had to look it up. I'd heard about pardalotes, but never seen one. You live & learn, I guess.
I love them, one of my favourite Australian birds
Hey mate beautiful shots.. I watched all of your videos. If you don’t mind can you please share the location to see those beautiful birds thank you in advance 😊
Which birds are you talking about? Most of them are around Melbourne
@@FranciscusScheelings Red robins / Red-capped Robins 😊
Most of them were seen at Woodlands Historic Park@@Shanakadon89
@@FranciscusScheelings Thank you very much mate.
Thank you! This was my husband’s favourite of all the birds that visited our shack in Gippsland. There was always that one male, strutting his stuff, surrounded by a dozen females. My husband thought that bird was the best! 😁😁😁
Yeah they are great little birds I love them
A wonderful video. Thank you.
