The Great Jazz Trombone Of Carl Fontana

Carl Fontana and his incredible technique on display. I first heard Carl on Kenton's "Intermission Riff" back in the early 60's and got to meet him when I was working at the Cal Neva Lodge in 64' in the lounge and he was working with Buddy Greco opposite the act I was with. What an honor that was all those years ago. Besides being the monster jazz player he could play beautiful lead in a big ba...

This was made in 1968 at Willowbrook HS in Villa Park, IL.
Sweet as
One of the greatest of the greats, hands DOWN!
Leonard Nimoy @8:15 is thinking: this human activity of blowing through a bent tube seems... somewhat illogical.
Any idea the name of this tune or where to get the arrangement?
It's just Rhythm Changes.
@1320_ikimasho well, yeah, but someone obviously wrote a melody and arranged it for big band.
As a 1976 high schooler, I played with him at Mountain View College in Dallas. I was selected to participate in his 21-trombone choir on "Rainy Day."
So amazing, was that for the official recording session or just a performance?
Incredible :33
Thosecdays are gone.... 4 yo 6 days gigs playing everyday opportunities to play jam all day

Greetings. Do you have details for this interview? What was the date of the interview? Where did the interview take place? Who was the interviewer? I am completing the first comprehensive biography of the life and career of saxophonist Junior Cook; this interview is a gold mine and confirmation of what I've heard anecdotally from several musicians...
Sorry that I do not have any more details about this interview. It was sent to me along with other jazz artists interviews many years ago and last year I found them in the archives I keep and re-posted them. I believe they originally where a podcast and the photos were added. Perhaps some other viewers will have more info for you. Thanks for watching and listening and good luck with your take on the great jazz master Junior Cook. Sam
Urbie fantastic trombon player ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I think this is from a date in Vancouver in 1978. The session was later released as “Trombone Heaven,” but without this tune.
Thanks for the info Sean. I've often wondered when this was recorded. I do know that both Carl and Frank were working Paul Anka and often did side gigs to just play. I know there are a lot of bootleg recordings that surface occasionally with Carl. Worked a lot with Carl in the Vegas days. Master musician of the Jazz Trombone. Frank was my first influences when I started playing. Take care Sean, Sam
RIP Dad
Your father was respected by the best trumpet players I have ever known. i'm a retired musician and know a lot of heavy players and the mere mention of your father brings a smile. Take care Duane, Sam
Your father is the reason I ever appreciated Jazz in the first place. I was 17 when I first heard Skydive, and then Little Sunflower, and later Red Clay. Shortly after, I bought my first Jazz album, a Freddie Hubbard album. I have been listening ever since and usually start my mornings listening to First Light. There are an array of outstanding trumpeters, and your father is the best of them all. Take care.
God bless ur Father man!A lot of love respect, and many thanks! My absolute favorite!
Seu pai era fora da curva no trompete... 🎺e no flugelhorn melhor som que já ouvi...
Freddie Hubbard still has a wonderful sound to my ears! Now I know how he did it. Hanging out with a lot with different musicians in person developing ideas. Freddie is a style unto his own. God bless the child who’s got his own. His comment about playing in a big band and not being able to hear himself is something I can relate to! His wanting to be a soloist is something I can also relate to. His music carries a huge emotional impact on me every time I listen to it.
the drummer is Sonny Payne
This is Concherto # 3 ! Sergey Rachmaninoff wrote five works for piano and orchestra: 4 concertos and the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.
And the first name of the great pianist is Byron , not Brian.
