2nd Order Thinking - Thinking Tools Music Video
Educational mental models / thinking tools Music Video.
Second-order thinking is a mental model that involves considering the potential consequences and implications of decisions beyond just the immediate and obvious outcomes. It involves thinking about the long-term effects, unintended consequences, and ripple effects of a decision or action. This type of thinking requires a deeper level of analysis and consideration of multiple variables and factors that may influence the outcome. It also involves being able to anticipate and plan for potential challenges and obstacles that may arise as a result of a decision. Overall, second-order thinking involves a more strategic and holistic approach...

The powerful personal model I use is based on the concept of Sufficiency vs. Maximization combined with a visual representation of the Pareto 80/20 Principle involving a parallelogram as you will see in the g...
Sharpen Your Thinking - Philosophical Razors to Cut Away Complexity

Learn what a philosophical razor is and how to construct your own razor for better thinking. Philosophical razors are principles that favor simplicity and cut through unnecessary complexity. We discuss criteria like being succinct, useful over time, and promoting clarity. Then we create a new hypothetical "Fourth Grader Razor" based on the Curse of Knowledge bias. This razor says to assume othe...

Alloying - Make better combinations (relationships, partnerships, & more) with this mental model
Просмотров 3,1 тыс.3 года назад
Alloying is a term from physics and specifically metallurgy, where typically, a metal is combined with one or more elements. By knowing what Alloying traditionally is, we can now approach it from the stand point of a mental model, where it can be creatively applied to other disciplines that may be much different than its origins in metallurgy. The secret is in putting together clever combinatio...

Occam's Broom vs. Occam's Razor: A potentially deceptive model of simplification
Просмотров 3,8 тыс.3 года назад
Occam's Broom is a term invented by molecular biologist Sidney Brenner and is a creative play on the mental model of Occam's Razor. Occam's broom refers to the process by which unfavorable facts are "swept" under the rug by intellectually dishonorable proponents of a certain viewpoint or theory when the unfavorable information does not support their views. #OccamsBroom #mentalmodel #occamsrazor...
Thinking Skillfully: Induction vs. Deduction, ULTIMATE tools from the Scientific Method & Philosophy
Просмотров 8 тыс.3 года назад
Induction and Deduction are methods of reasoning and when we look at their structure we approach them from the viewpoint of mental models, where we essentially take a subject and objectify it so that we can manipulate it in our minds more effectively and apply it across disciplines. As we hone our definitions of what inductive and deductive reasoning are, we are developing razor-sharp thinking ...

It's not that other people can't be evil, it's that we often waste too much time validating our point of view rather than just moving on to a more satisfying solution. Most things that are problems to us, need to be resolved regardless of the other person's intention...and we often don't have time to figure out how they mean something. On the flip side, sometimes we have to decide whether to extend trust to a person, and then it really does matter what their intentions are.
I like your openness and insight. I feel that intentions can change but still have importance in my considerations.
If we disregard unimportant-not-urgent why would we delegate unimportant-urgent?
urgency seems to imply necessity
DEI will probably ignore all this. Expertise isn't needed...right?
as a German Biochemist Ph D - it is the Limbic System, the HPA Axis - that BLOCKS the Frontal Cortex and keeps us in the Prison of our Auto Pilot. There is no logic rational way to break out. It takes intense Endurance training to total Exhaustion to reset the Auto Pilot PAIN Reward pattern. Excellent Business for the Mind Opiate Drug Pushers scamming us...
Holy moly. I was gonna get all uppity about you mispronouncing Andrew Carnegie's last name Car-NUH-gee. I was wrong. It's actually... how you said it: Car-NAY-gee. Heck, I've even been to his gravesite in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. hahahaha Excellent example of the Circle of Competence... just be careful not to overstate what you think you know.
Insanely informative
Hey man! Great work! I'd like to show it to people who can't speak English. Could you enable captions, or automatic transcripts? I'd love to help, if needed.
I think I may not have done subtitles on these videos because most of my other video transcripts were getting ripped off and posted as people’s blog or medium content. I will make a note to look for my original script to try and set as transcript. It may also have been a length issue, I don’t remember.
This was really helpful, thank you! I work at a vitamin factory and I have noticed over the years that some tasks produce way better results with less input than more. I will commit this to memory now that I have a more refined model to use. Keep up the good work! (Recently subscribed)
Thank you 🙏 I appreciate the encouragement and am glad it was helpful.
'This explanation sounds like it is correct, and I find it simple, therefore, by Ocham's Razor, it must be right.' That's not Ocham's Razor. Why not?
can you pls remove the pen animation, its extremely distracting for such a nice topic
7:38 this model is misleading due to the fact that the presentation is rigged, bc everything is known to fit in the jar. But in order to do that, it's important to understand not everyone has the same rocks, the same number of rocks, or the same amount of pebbles or sand. Sometimes you dont actually know if the rock (or rocks) are the size that you think they are, or that they will fit, and some days the jar is bigger, some days the jar is smaller. But i am loving this content. 👍
Second-Order Thinking
The first, first-principle is: "Don't reference self-contradictory books like the bible."
Thank you for sharing this
You are so welcome
Who cares if someone is a dumb-ass or an ass-hole? Every judicial system on the planet ignores the nuance, pour encourager les autres, and they are wildly effective in making decisions and keeping society safe. 🤤
Hanlon's razor can be a dangerous heuristic to go by. It allows us to easily shrug off actual malice / corruption because of how nice this platitude sounds. While in actuality it's multiple logical fallacies bundled into one (oversimplification, hasty generalisation, confirmation bias, ad ignorantum..). IMHO It can probably be applied fairly safely to day-to-day situations when dealing with regular people who don't have strong incentives to lie, steal and manipulate which is often the case in for example politics. Be careful, stay sharp.
Well said 👏
The worst video I ever heard

Power is above the truth and power deserves wealth. Ask our leaders.
I am a fun of Charlie Munger, I agree it’s huge important to learn and practice the essential fundamental mental models. I just found this valuable video series and very happy that you have been updating it all the time. Maybe it's of less possibility for this kind of video to get popular, but I believe that more and more people will find its value.
Thank you. I appreciate the motivation to keep going :)
Very powerful
Along the same lines of Fundamental attribution error.
wow this content is beautiful
Not buying it. Plausible deniability is the core of Narcissistic manipulation. They either know EXACTLY what they're doing or else they're sycophants angling vaguely for personal gain. In lieu of facts, the "careless" absolutely care about WHO they're aligning themselves with, namely whomever has the money and power they covet.
YO! i sent a work email out then just left... this vid pops up... they were this, 100%... fawk.
Finally: what is the definition of “certainty”. Is it really different from “sound” ?
Can we say that there is a temporal uniformity of nature and a spatial uniformity of nature? Also: aren’t there two other big axioms needed that hold up the ladder?! What are their formal names and what do they say?! Thanks!!

Mental models are like the compass of the mind, guiding us through the uncharted waters of life. They help us navigate complexity, make better decisions, and understand the world with clarity. Learning and applying these models is truly a journey to wisdom. 🌟🧠 #MentalModels #NavigateLife

A helpful tip for finding your circle of competence: Look at the titles of the last 100 videos in your youtube history. What are the common themes among all the videos that you tend to watch? Those themes are the things that you have expertise in.

Thanks, while I do do some art and most diagrams myself, a lot was purchased with the software so I can’t take too much credit there :)
I was recently harmed by carelessness. The result is indistinguishable from malicious harm. It could have been avoided. *Carelessness is malicious*, as are incompetence and stupidity. Regardless of how I resolve it internally, the real harm cannot be undone. Forgiving the person is likely to invite further harm to myself, even if accidental.
I’m sorry to hear that. I’ve found forgiving benefits ourselves more than anything. If I forgive someone I don’t necessarily forget. Trust may be gone but so is resentment. 🤷♂️
