2nd Order Thinking - Thinking Tools Music Video
Educational mental models / thinking tools Music Video.
Second-order thinking is a mental model that involves considering the potential consequences and implications of decisions beyond just the immediate and obvious outcomes. It involves thinking about the long-term effects, unintended consequences, and ripple effects of a decision or action. This type of thinking requires a deeper level of analysis and consideration of multiple variables and factors that may influence the outcome. It also involves being able to anticipate and plan for potential challenges and obstacles that may arise as a result of a decision. Overall, second-order thinking involves a more strategic and holistic approach...

The powerful personal model I use is based on the concept of Sufficiency vs. Maximization combined with a visual representation of the Pareto 80/20 Principle involving a parallelogram as you will see in the g...
Sharpen Your Thinking - Philosophical Razors to Cut Away Complexity

Learn what a philosophical razor is and how to construct your own razor for better thinking. Philosophical razors are principles that favor simplicity and cut through unnecessary complexity. We discuss criteria like being succinct, useful over time, and promoting clarity. Then we create a new hypothetical "Fourth Grader Razor" based on the Curse of Knowledge bias. This razor says to assume othe...

Alloying - Make better combinations (relationships, partnerships, & more) with this mental model
Просмотров 3 тыс.3 года назад
Alloying is a term from physics and specifically metallurgy, where typically, a metal is combined with one or more elements. By knowing what Alloying traditionally is, we can now approach it from the stand point of a mental model, where it can be creatively applied to other disciplines that may be much different than its origins in metallurgy. The secret is in putting together clever combinatio...

Occam's Broom vs. Occam's Razor: A potentially deceptive model of simplification
Просмотров 3,7 тыс.3 года назад
Occam's Broom is a term invented by molecular biologist Sidney Brenner and is a creative play on the mental model of Occam's Razor. Occam's broom refers to the process by which unfavorable facts are "swept" under the rug by intellectually dishonorable proponents of a certain viewpoint or theory when the unfavorable information does not support their views. #OccamsBroom #mentalmodel #occamsrazor...
Thinking Skillfully: Induction vs. Deduction, ULTIMATE tools from the Scientific Method & Philosophy
Просмотров 8 тыс.3 года назад
Induction and Deduction are methods of reasoning and when we look at their structure we approach them from the viewpoint of mental models, where we essentially take a subject and objectify it so that we can manipulate it in our minds more effectively and apply it across disciplines. As we hone our definitions of what inductive and deductive reasoning are, we are developing razor-sharp thinking ...

It's not that other people can't be evil, it's that we often waste too much time validating our point of view rather than just moving on to a more satisfying solution. Most things that are problems to us, need to be resolved regardless of the other person's intention...and we often don't have time to figure out how they mean something. On the flip side, sometimes we have to decide whether to extend trust to a person, and then it really does matter what their intentions are.

I think I may not have done subtitles on these videos because most of my other video transcripts were getting ripped off and posted as people’s blog or medium content. I will make a note to look for my original script to try and set as transcript. It may also have been a length issue, I don’t remember.

7:38 this model is misleading due to the fact that the presentation is rigged, bc everything is known to fit in the jar. But in order to do that, it's important to understand not everyone has the same rocks, the same number of rocks, or the same amount of pebbles or sand. Sometimes you dont actually know if the rock (or rocks) are the size that you think they are, or that they will fit, and some days the jar is bigger, some days the jar is smaller. But i am loving this content. 👍

Hanlon's razor can be a dangerous heuristic to go by. It allows us to easily shrug off actual malice / corruption because of how nice this platitude sounds. While in actuality it's multiple logical fallacies bundled into one (oversimplification, hasty generalisation, confirmation bias, ad ignorantum..). IMHO It can probably be applied fairly safely to day-to-day situations when dealing with regular people who don't have strong incentives to lie, steal and manipulate which is often the case in for example politics. Be careful, stay sharp.

Not buying it. Plausible deniability is the core of Narcissistic manipulation. They either know EXACTLY what they're doing or else they're sycophants angling vaguely for personal gain. In lieu of facts, the "careless" absolutely care about WHO they're aligning themselves with, namely whomever has the money and power they covet.

I was recently harmed by carelessness. The result is indistinguishable from malicious harm. It could have been avoided. *Carelessness is malicious*, as are incompetence and stupidity. Regardless of how I resolve it internally, the real harm cannot be undone. Forgiving the person is likely to invite further harm to myself, even if accidental.
