I have been a creator of curious things since discovering pencils. My work marries sculpture, photography, and architecture-an exploration of elements that construct our exterior worlds and interior spaces. I build and create through multiple mediums, from letterpress printing to skate-able structures, 3D modeling, parametric design, and digital-to-physical fabrication.

Laser Cutting Wood Type

Today I’m working of a new version of the Skateboarding Saves Poster. It’s a slightly different design. I found that the wood font I want to use is short an A and a S. I figured I would try and make replacements using the lasercutter. The results are surprisingly good. Another fun day of experimental typography at Old Star Press in Venice Beach. On this rain soaked weekend, I made a letterpress card for my friends who just had a baby girl. I print it using multiple vintage letterpress machines here in Venice Beach. Opening up the Old Star Press Studio in Venice, CA. The galley cabinet here has tons of treasures hiding in it. So, today I'm going to unbox new metal type I bought 5 years ago at the Printer's Fair in Carson. This type is from Skyline Type Foundry in Arizona, and the font is PRISMA 24pt Designed by Rudolf Koch (the title card in the video is misspelled with all apologizes to the great artist!)...

Late to the party, but thank you! Just picked up a new set of Bembo from M&H and decided I should be all official and pull a print prior to sorting into the cabinet, but wasn't sure if it was supposed to be done like a normal print or just printed straight from the paper flap box. Very helpful.
Do you have the file I could download?
Why not cut the letter shape out of 5mm walnut and then glue mount the letter on a block? Cutting is quicker, has no raster lines.
is it possibe to make drawing also in Rhino?

Just stopped to say thank you. I'm modeling my 2nd skatepark, and was struggling how to create some complex shapes. Even after using Rhino for ~4 years, you introduced me some new commands that I wasn't aware of. Absolutely great. Edit: the grasshopper script is an epic timesaver

Such a big help, thank you! :) When you do the sweep2 command - how do you get rid of the black lines it creates as well - you get the smooth surface, but when i try i get the surface along with a lot of additional transition lines. I wonder what I am doing different? Can't sem to spot the difference from the video.
The black lines you see are isocurves. You can turn isocurve visibility on and off in Preferences>Display mode, or on Right sidebar under Panels:Display. If that option isn't available in the inspector panel, click the little gear icon in the upper right to activate Display tab. Also, select "Do not change cross sections" when the Sweep 2 Rail Options window opens. Otherwise, you may have more geometry data, and isocurves, than needed.

Thanks for an amazing guide! So helpful :) Do you have any tips for how to go about it if something "breaks" the coping line? For example a bank with a seperate coping line or a love seat?

Hi, I don't have the grasshopper definition for download anywhere, but it's easy to just recreate. You can see the whole setup at the 17:20 mark.

I recently got a job as a skatepark designer, i was previously working in sketchup and blender and was told to convert to rhino that has very limited free tutorials online, then I happened to stumble upon this amazing video, and it was a total lifesaver. Thank you so much!
What’re the benefits of moving from sketch/blender to Rhino?
@@adamcollingburn430 you can go more into detail with corners and hips and whatnot
Blender ain’t so accurate in units. Also (at least subjectively speaking) rhino handles much better nurbs modeling than blender, which is basically essential for modeling curved surfaces.
