The first thing I learned as a writer was that to learn to write good you first have to learn to write bad. Writing is like all other creative skills. Not only is it a cycle that feeds on itself (your past work inspires a greater level connections in the plot) but it’s always easier to work off a sketch or rough structure than it is to take a blank page and attempt to draw a masterpiece as if you could trace it line for line. Write an outline or ROUGH-draft, THEN trim your work, sculpt the story, fix the plot holes, and refine the prose. The first manuscript of any story is always going to be a turd, so don’t start off trying to polish it before you’ve finished carving out the diamond. Enjoy your imperfect creative journey, and don’t worry about the destination.

So not sure that’s a true story. It could be a conflation of the stories about the shows that were recorded and used for the making of Anthem of the Sun. The shows Garcia thought were horrible but ended up being used to make the album because they were so good.

Very well said! A story isn't a laundry list of disjunct events with low stakes and lazy ex machina's. The variations of actions, consequences, problems, reactions, growth/decline, and (at least) attempts at a solution are simply infinite. Just like Newton's Third Law Of Motion, "Every action has an equal and opposite reaction." Shouldn't a good story be regularly moving between tension and release, rather than "And then..."? Thanks for the video!

The adage: learn to write by writing applies. Yes it will likely be sub par for a great while, but when you have learned the ropes somewhat you then know even what the trite stuff is to innovate away from.
