#109. Should You Only Use Evidence-Based Therapies?
I love your conversations. Thank you, once again. 🌟
I dig lightspeed as a description. I've tried explaining how my brain works to doctors using visual references. My favorite is that I'm Captain Picard on Starship Enterprise but instead of one big viewscreen I have several hundred and most often they're showing different planets all with different audio. Sometimes amazing, but also incredibly overwhelming.
I can definitely see some overlap depending on the situation, and appreciate the discussion. It seems like both are about feeling "safe" but can present in different ways through our actions, and figuring out if we're doing it to hide something about ourselves or avoid conflict (or both) is helpful.
Im from Kenosha wi !
Oh wow, thank you for this topic. I thought I was the only one with nasty loops spinning in my brain. It may not always come out of anxiety, but it is definitely always anxiety-provoking. Dana, I agree, finding the right explanation or hearing the right words can immediately take off the stress. It can be so exhausting to be trapped in one of those loops. I will listen to this episode at least twice! ❤
I'll say it. PEERs. it's perfunctory
It's not about how many friends you have. It's so you have the skills necessary if you want friends.
This was so great and timely. I needed to hear that not everyone needs or requires a multitude of friends for happiness. Thank you!
Friends are great, but a stash of Pop-Tarts never judges, always supports, and is there at 3am. 🥲🍓 Also, check out my 'Are Friends Normal?' video for more existential snack-related friendship debates. 😂
I only watch serious thrillers alone😅. It’s too easy to predict “mystery”. I hated the Knives Out movies. Thought they were boring and not great (no twists). I was shocked neurotypicals loved them. Why? They are so formulaic. I loved The Millennium trilogy because it’s so detailed and the plot was great /realistic /not completely predictable. I also love Chuck Palahniuk books for being so original. Can’t stand hallmark type movies. But love my comfort movies and what I call romantic comedies like The Lobster or Harold and Maud or Wet Hot American Summer.
I am trying standup but they only give me 3 minutes (which I think it for experts). Doing 10 minutes is easy, 5 more difficult, 3 is expert top level comic. Yet, neurotypicals see it differently. So they keep setting me up to fail by only giving 3 minutes. If they gave me 7 minutes, it’d be so much better. Killing Eve! Yes, Carolyn is actually my favorite and I think she’s neurodivergent. People misread her.
Thanks for this.
I want to drink tea out of cups that look like beakers.❤
You can.
I'm laughing at the struggle I'm having to find the most perfect comment to contribute because there are too many points that resonate... typical Neurodivergent over here. Now the only challenge is to not list all those points and how they connect. Lmao. Anyone else feeling the same way? Thank you so much for sharing! Hi Charley!
Your conversations do nurture the ones who listen to you. I hope you belive it, because I like to listen to you. Et félicitations pour ce beau pull acheté en France, quelle bonne idée ! Greetings from Paris. 🗼 Really. 🤗
I call it “closing tabs”, i. e. My brain is a web browser with hundreds of tab open and there’s music playing in a few of them and my RAM is completely used up. In order to function I have to close tabs by resolving the tasks or processing the issue.
Yes I have mental modes like this. Things I do in my brain to regulate, what you are calling cognitive stimming include listening to the same song over and over, doing a not too challenging jigsaw puzzle, or an easy sudoku. Finding patterns and putting order into chaos. Doing these things is as necessary as tapping my fingers or other stims and I need to do them more when I am struggling with information processing. When I am trying to solve a social or interpersonal or past trauma. So the two can happen at the same time but they are distinct processes.
Autistic masking is trying to pass as neurotypical. Allistics dont have to try to be what they already are.
Thank tou bith
Thank you for making me Gwenpowered ✨✨
A rhetorical question?... When you already know the answer?
Great talk!
this is awesome how have i never seen your channel before???
This is very important. Though I do not fully understand why talk therapy does not work for me. To me it feels like I am expected to come to the conclusion myself - which sometimes works - but I feel also left in the dark, since this is my issue to begin with, I cannot figure out certain social aspects. On top I am reflective, yes sometimes it helps speaking with someone, but often I have reflected a problem already, speaking about it can only give me limited insight. What I need is actual advice - I would even say I prefer if the advice is not ideal over talk therapy - because that way I have something to work with, something to reflect, something I can implement. I also agree on the structure aspect. For me I feel we always start every session at a similar point and I really do not see where the therapy as a whole goes, it makes me feel a bit like walking in the dark and not getting anywhere. Even if we would stray from a plan, I would prefer a bus plan so to speak. I have a nice neurotypical therapist and some sessions left, I wonder how can I make our last sessions more efficient to me? I love the fluid energy of your talks :) even knowing your profession discusses this is very confirming
yes, but have real problems with it.
Much harder to find a qualified therapist though who has autism themselves...no matter how "neurodivergent affirming" the therapist claims they are themselves, if they're not autistic **themselves** it's going to be a life long battle getting the right autism-affirming, autism-informed and actually autistic therapy. The 3-5 average therapists seems a much lower number reported than actually anecdotally in online spaces I have found. (Late diagnosed at age 39, female here myself reporting to inform you, I'm on number...12? The last one that DX me with ASD was the boundary-less one though. So all the trauma healing was good for naught in the end with the egregious violations she made, many of which can be guessed just upon the examples in here)
Therapy is a privilege, QUALITY therapy when autistic is rare; especially amongst those therapists on the spectrum themselves that won't make it cost-affordable to others.
I work with a therapist who works with a lot of autistic people and therapy with her has been super helpful
I just wish more autistic (especially autistic females) practiced psychotherapy and took insurance without a waitlist! I realize this is a "niche" needle in the haystack sort of therapist to find, but it's also not fair that so many therapists with ASD do not take insurance and this only further exacerbates our issues. We shouldn't be considered cash cows, and the ND therapists should know this. The list in my state? *THREE* therapists who claims to be on the ASD spectrum and all three either have wait lists or don't take insurance. 😢
Do they do sliding scale based on income or straight fee for service?
@@divacassandra1 No.
@@divacassandra1 Aside from that though, "sliding scale" isn't what most think it is. Here's a tidbit about sliding scale rates. I was seeing someone with my partner for some couples sessions. Hadn't met the deductible yet, asked about sliding scale, said it's only for those either already without insurance and if not for that, when she ran insurance, it was still less than what her sliding scale rate goes for. I'd say if they're working ethically in their practice finances, I would imagine most all therapists operate in this manner also. Edit for further clarity: We are a one income house only right now also and our landlord increased our rent by $500--unless they wanna squeeze me in for just $50 a session, no sliding scale fee will be low enough to afford the therapist I require. It sucks!
If a neuro typical is a therapist it means they're lazy and low iq
I love Dana Waters! First saw her on tik tok and stayed for the great insights, questions and research/professional topic references. Stellar contribution to the community, Thank you!
Dana is THE BEST! But, I'm biased 😉
great video, thank you :)
I could never get much from therapy until I found an ND therapist. Even issues that aren't about being ND are all improving so much after finding the right match for how my mind works. I can really relate to your video! CBT never worked for me either.
You managed to come back, nicely done. 😂❤
Two people who are clearly stuck in their own echo chamber bemoaning...people in echo chambers. Very, very rich.
Thank you so much for touching on this subject I am an HSP and on discovering a lot of triggers and a lot of things so you talking about don't ignore the irritations is hugely helpful for me thank you so much❤
"Collaborative and by consent" -- I love that!
I am amazed that anyone finds therapy regulating. It leaves me dysregulated, traumatized and in fight or flight all week and then I finally recover and it's time for therapy again ...
my name is Avi i have high functioning asperger syndrome i never felt the need to mask in my life i have always been my genuine self.
Trauma based masking is a type of self harm. You are masking to survive the mental health damage from other peoples reaction to you. "Is Cutting Always Bad?" Philosophically, I might technically be able to find some weird niche argument for it being okay, but when you zoom out, you shouldn't really be in a situation where cutting yourself is helpful and I feel like masking is the same. It's really not a good thing<tm> that it is sometimes helpful to mask.
Thanks I’d love to hear how cbt could help someone who is autistic with pda profile
So great to see you on here, Samantha!!!

Hi, great interview! I have an M.Ed. in educational psychology and M.A in education/teaching (science), what else do I need to transition to or start a career in educational therapy? Thank you.
This was so beneficial for everyone! I just told my coworkers about correctivitis - “well actually”- great tips that all ages can put to use - not just for school age kids! Thank you for this!
Whoa. Dr. Braun described my experience with APD with so much accuracy. When she gave the example of a person with APD being visual and having a clear vision in their head, but not being able to express it in words. That example of “We went to Hawaii” but not elaborating is spot on. I do tend to visualize in my head and not explain details when I’m telling a story.
Yes, awesome thanks so mych
Thank you so much for this. I’m on my second meeting. And I have yet to have a report of the meeting to be done. I believe I was supposed to have a report before the meeting, correct this is Los Angeles, California LA USD
