The Flying Lecturer
Великобритания
Добавлен 18 сен 2016
I have had a private pilot's license (PPL) now for 20+ years and still get a buzz from flying for fun. To pay for it, and to fill in the time between poor weather in the UK, I am an aerospace engineering academic at the University of Liverpool.
This channel primarily houses in-cockpit aviation videos, with ATC audio, showing the sorts of trips that you can make with a PPL. They are for information and entertainment, to allow interested viewers to review them (which includes me) and to learn from both the good bits and the mistakes that I inevitably make. Most flights are to or from Blackpool Airport (EGNH) in a PA-28 Warrior hired from Westair Flying School.
It goes without saying that they are not for flight training and should not be used as such. The sequences are edited so crucial elements of the flight, check lists etc. might be missing.
If you do find them of interest, please feel free to Subscribe or Like.

Glasgow Prestwick to Blackpool VFR with ATC

This is the return trip to Blackpool from Prestwick. Busy over the Lakes, but, as usual, nothing seen. I have left most of the flight in for the scenery, if you are that way inclined. Front camera (and hence audio) battery died 5 mins from landing. Doh. ABANDONED trip to the Lake District, Cessna 172, VFR with ATC
Просмотров 1154 года назад
A short week or so before the UK COVID-19 lockdown, I managed to get airborne for a short time. The plan was to head over the Lake District but low cloud building to the North of the airfield meant that I decided to head back rather than risk being unable to. Of course, the weather cleared once back on the ground but the wind did strengthen. Not sure when the next video will be but I hope every...
AWFUL first landing on Currency Check, Cessna 172SP, VFR with ATC

At Westair, if you are unable to fly for 28 days or more, then you need, as a minimum, a currency check flight with an instructor. I have also started flying a new aircraft, a Cessna 172SP G-OWST. It is an aircraft that can be a bit tricky to land as it really likes to fly (not a bad trait in an aircraft, except for when you want it to not fly!). Here, I demonstrate both the need for the curren...

A GRAND DAY OUT Part 4: Welshpool to Warton VFR in a PA28 with ATC and a Nav/Comms Failure
Просмотров 1454 года назад
So, the intent here was to get back to Blackpool direct from Welshpool. At the time, Blackpool had planned closures and we arrived back sooner than anticpated. ATC at Warton kindly offered us some circuits, which we don't often get to do and so the offer was accepted. In the circuit, the aircraft then suffered an Nav/Comms failure so the decision was to land and see if we could sort it out. Tha...

I'm a bit late to this party, but thanks for the trip. I found you due to searching for flights covering my training routes from Tatenhill, having just done QXC and prepping for Skill Test (gulp!). Great to hear comms and see how you handled failure. Thanks!
No problem. Best of luck with the Skills Test!
how can I download?
Thank you. I am planning to fly to Kiddiminster from Blackpool as part of a multi-day trip next week. Your video has eased my worries about going through the corridor for the first time.
Great. Glad you found it helpful. I guess that you have already found this official guidance but here it is just in case: skywise.caa.co.uk/pilots-guide-to-the-manchester-low-level-route-llr/ . Best of luck with the flight.

nice work man!
Thank you!
Hello, Can I please contact you?
i’ve flown that plane!!
She's still going strong!
I learned to fly at Westair then moved South. I did my CPL QXC to Sleap last July from White Waltham and recognised G-BORL there when I landed from my BPL days . As I randomly found this video I wondered if it was the same day as the sky conditions looked identical and when you landed there I was! Well, my G-AXSZ parked up anyhow. Small world, especially in flying. Great video.
Thank you for the kind comment. Had a quick check in my log book. It was 29/07/20. Managed to get my 12 hours in during the window that we were allowed to fly last year! Small world indeed.
@@theflyinglecturer7813 indeed it was the 29/7. I fuelled at Sleap then direct Isle of Wight then back to White Waltham. Tiring but great day. I actually got the 12 hours too but only 50 minutes instructor time can you believe so am doing my Prof Check on Wednesday at Oxford.. anyhow great to see the vid and will enjoy watching the rest. Fly safe.
Good video, but ditch the music 🤫
When FISO instructs you to take off at your discretion, the correct response is " taking off... [G-ABCD]". It is not correct to say "...at my discretion" . Read CAP413
Sound is VERY low...sit closer to Mike please...
Nice flight Mike, it's making me miss when we could actually land away!
I just do it in Xplane.... still quite nice lol
Great video Mike, perfect weather too. I'm looking forward to getting back up next week. I've had the same problem with reception for london info in that same spot, they need to put up another mast!
Thanks Joe. Enjoy next week. I need to get something booked in too. Hadn't realised how much I had missed it until I finished editing this one. Next vid = Prestwick...
What was the strange loop that you did when you arrived? Seemed to arrive dead side, then crossed the runway and looped back to the dead side before joining on the live side for your first circuit. Also, what a high final approach! Seemed to land halfway down the runway. Good video though, thank you.
Ian, thanks. Yes, that was us positioning for a standard overhead join but arriving from the East (the 'wrong' side compared to every CAA diagram that I have ever seen). Maybe we should arrived further North or South and then arrived from the West but I think that our track kept us clear of other traffic arriving on a standard approach. Ground track perhaps a bit more 'circular' than it should have been. Welshpool has a circuit height of 1500ft (normal for us would be 1000ft) and so, ideally, we would have extended downwind to take account of it. However, that (from our perspective at the time) seemed to be taking us a bit too close to terrain for our liking, forcing us to turn 'early'. So, that did leave us high but we got there in the end.
Great to see you flying again, and even with the haze, such a nice place to fly round!
Thanks Joe. Are you flying again?
@@theflyinglecturer7813 Not yet unfortunately, I'm without a medical at the moment actually, hopefully getting it back soon but the CAA are taking their time of course.
@@JoeRichardson02 Ah, ok. Hope it comes back soon! Trips to Caernarfon and Prestwick up next (when I get a mo - just a small matter of the start of term to negotiate :) )
@@theflyinglecturer7813 Thanks, and nice that sounds great, I'll like forward to seeing them!
Planning a trip to Elvington from Carlisle and this was really useful. Cheers 👍🏻
Great, thank you. Glad to hear it was helpful. Enjoy your trip when you go.
Great video!
Thanks Rob. God to hear from you. Hope all is well? Been a bit quiet on the flying front of late for obvious reasons. Tried to go yesterday but, after months of glorious weather, once the rules were relaxed, weather turns rubbish (obviously) :)
@@theflyinglecturer7813 I know the feeling! Having my first go in a 3-axis Microlight on Wednesday, weather dependent, been waiting months to have a try! Can't wait to have a day out to Carlisle myself one day! Caernafon and Walney Island also high up on the list too! Any other recommendations?
@@robb969 nice. I have enjoyed my trips up to Scotland (Oban, Campbeltown). Much quieter on the radio :) Duxford for the museums, Newquay for the beach, Elvington for old times sake and the museum :)
@@theflyinglecturer7813 Thank you - I'll get those places on the list! Elvington - be sure not to get too close to our Electric-Lift aircraft!! PA28 would lose to that bomb proof wing! Empennage was nice though ;)
@@robb969 Lol. The other one on my list that I have not made it to yet is Glenforsa www.glenforsaairfield.com/
Hi ! I like your video, if you want, you can subscribe to my chanel, thanks 😉👍 ruclips.net/p/PL7ZjvCDv119lDnOWDFZGQi7XzCM720oZJ
Haha I love that line about paying for all 2000 metres of runway, nicely improved and credit to you for putting a bad landing online.
Thanks Joe. You will note that there is no commentary from the first 'landing' :)
@@theflyinglecturer7813 haha I can imagine the being some colourful language 😂
Great video , seemed like strange ATC Comms at Carlisle , no other circuit traffic seemed to transmit on the frequency and ATC seemed to be giving constant position reports for the other aircraft - almost as if everyone else was non radio
Andrew, thank you. Tbh, I think that he was bored :) I think that there is a comment at the end over radio that 'it looks like a proper airfield again'.
Looks exciting! Well handled though 👍.
Splendid video Dr Jump, amazing scenery.
Ha, thanks Ross, how are you doing?
Looks like a great trip, I'll have to add Newquay to the list!
It was. Talk to Stuart if you are interested - he has organised this for the last couple of years I think. 2.5 hrs is a long time to be in BORL without a break :)
@@theflyinglecturer7813 Yeah I'd love to go with others like this sometime, my problem tends to be that I work in the week but I'll make it happen eventually, and I can imagine haha!
Nice flying!
"hold it off, hold it off" - I love it haha!
Obviously an homage to Stuart C!
Nice flying, awesome to see some videos of Romeo Lima on RUclips, I'm due to get checked out on her in a few weeks. Hope to see you around sometime!
Hey Joe, thank you. She is a nice aircraft to fly. And good luck with the check ride. Always happy to go flying so once you are checked out, let me know.
Macrahanish. Been there a couple of times. At least you took your own means of escape!!
Did you spend any time there?
Nice video drjumpjets (despite the Red Rose/White Rose jibe at the start :) ) - how'd you record the audio? I've got a Xiaomi Yi GoPro knockoff for video, but it doesn't have an audio line in.....
Andrew, yes, apologies, force of habit as a lifelong Lancastrian :). I use the NFlightcam GoPro Kit: nflightcam.com/products/nflightcam-gopro-cockpit-kit with a GoPro Hero 3+. It comes with a filter for the lens to take out the prop and cabling to plug into headset and directly into the GoPro. Very easy to use (except the one time I forgot to plug it into the GoPro, doh) and works out of the box.
Another way of doing it without a direct line into the camera is shown here: ruclips.net/video/kbyclqtP46A/видео.html. Hope that helps :)
I'd had a look at the standalone audio option (sure I've got a digital VR somewhere) but reckoned it would be a bit too much of a faff for me to have to edit in a separate audio track..... On a different note - appreciate your considerate approach into 10 at Sherburn - I know the dog leg can be a bit off putting, but we get so much grief from the villages at the western end of the field that every well executed circuit is a plus.....
It was my flying buddy Oliver that flew us in and he did a great job at the dog leg. It is a bit of a challenge but we always try to stick to local published noise abatement procedures for the reasons that you outline i.e. not annoying the locals and the local flyers! I suppose editing in an audio track might be a bit of a pain - which editing software are you using? I have Adobe Premiere Elements 10 on an old laptop and it is just a case of dragging the audio into the timeline. Cueing might be an issue but I suppose that you could give a hand signal and a 'testing testing' at the same time to get it sync'ed visually?
Excellent. Really gives the idea.
