Values drive behaviour. Substituting behaviours for other behaviours is just a fools errand. The best way to change, is to change the weights of values. If you value somethng that is in opposition to a behaviour, you must amplify that value until it is more valuable and the behaviours will change. Its all about values.

I also doubt that people get married because they think their life is going to be better. Instead it is more likely that they want to be with that person no matter what.

One wonders how many conscious thoughts over unconscious thoughts there are. Most thoughts pop into our heads, when we speak, we dont acrually know what we are going to say as we are speaking. One also has to wonder about control of emotions. Rationally it seems that we can, but there are many scenarios where people have done things they are clinically not in control of. The final one is control of behaviour. This is where I would agree wholeheartedly. We are in control of our actions, although there are some "reactions" we are not control of. You are specifically talking about conscious thinking and acting, but cognitively this is not alwaya true. For example, with anxiety, I cannot control cortisol and adrenaline in my brain, causing anxiety. This is a chemical response to which I cannot control. I can try to mitigate it, but its biological.
